Started a new game, not even knowing how to add modifiers, followed the video, and checked to see I had 24 before reading the journal, and this achievement didn't unlock. I even paused the game as I was getting them but perhaps pausing counts towards your time

I came here to make the same points #2, 4, and 5 Tecstar70 made just above. The purple ball will roll around and not be where you left it, so the less you have to mess with it, the better. And I wish I had known about the "Dunk" prompt on the basketball hoop earlier. It will work whether Sam's bedroom door is open or closed.

Building on ElliotStone's comment, I did two runs at this and on both runs I got 23 journals and the achievement unlocked on the second run. I didn't quit out of the game so I don't know if this is a genuine glitch to exploit, where I tricked the game into thinking I had all 24 journals or not, but hypothetically you could go through the story taking your time and purposely miss a journal, then start again, get the one you missed and complete the game and it may unlock. If someone's wants to test this theory out, please do!

I completed in under 10mins and no achievement. Click on resume game and clicked on the final book and it popped. So if it doesn't pop for you and you know you are sub 10 mins and all journals, try ending the game again by resuming

I gotta agree, the video probably should have been done with the all light modifier on. I know that voids the achievement but it's just not really possible to see what's happening a good amount of the time the way it's recorded.

Not sure what my final time was but it seems like you can pause the timer by pausing in game. I was going through this with a walkthrough in hand and was pausing it every few seconds so that i didn’t have to memorize 20+ locationssmile

Yup, you can %100 pause it along with the video and get this easily.

Also, the achievement pops as soon as you've grabbed them all, so if you wanted to do this without a video walkthrough, you'll know when you get the last one

i ran into the same issues. Got all 24 within the time.

Did you spend time in the pause menu?

I turned on a lot of lights in the game as I went room to room. I dont think maka does in his video. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Great guide! After 3 or 4 attempts here's a few tips from my successful run:

1 - try to follow the video in short chunks rather than play/pause at each document. Trying to re-orientate yourself in the right direction wastes time. After a couple of tries you will remember a lot anyway.

2 - Get the attic key through the secret door to the right of the staircase as soon as you enter the hallway for the first time. This will save mucking about with the ball later on which will save you time.

3 - Chucking the carton at the purple ball in the garage was always the sticking point for me. Do your best to get it as quickly as possible.

4 - If you get close to the basketball hoop it prompts you to "dunk" so you should get it in the net first time.

5 - Turn the brightness up to full in the settings. I did turn on one or two lights but you dont have time for that.

Going to go for this right now, so glad you can pause!! Also, to those who say the recording should be brighter; I hear you and you are right buuuuut, like, just turn the brightness on your monitor/tv/phone/whatevs to watch it, like you should in game anyways

Thanks for the guide! A few things to add though...

As someone posted above, make sure that you turn the brightness settings up as far as they go. When I started this run, I noticed that my screen was way darker than what was in your video. Fortunately you can make the screen way brighter so that you don't even need to turn any lights on.

Secondly, I just wanted to confirm that as of today pausing the game does not count as time spent in the speedrun. I took about 12 minutes total, but about half of that was while the game was paused as I followed along the video.

Finally, there is a bit of a delay between finishing the run and the achievement popping. This is similar to the other speedrun achievements though.

To make this a lot easier on me, I took the words from the walk-thru and put it into a table, highlighting the various journal entries you need. It immensely sped things up. Complete credit to the walk-thru author for the words ... my contribution here is simply to order things to make it easier to find as you speed through the house.

I will also note that to get the Speedreader achievement, you need to get Mitten's journal entry, too ... that's number 22. So ... figure out ahead of time where that damned purple ball is in the garage as it's essential to getting this achievement.

1. From the start, open the cabinet, grab the duck, grab the key, and open the front door. Grab folder on table to left for Sam's journal - At the New House.
2. Go upstairs and turn right, open cabinet low to your left and grab the item then put it back for Sam's journal - Hanging Out With the Girls.
3. Continue straight through the door at the end. Examine the lock straight ahead inside the room and enter 0501 as the combination. Examine the picture inside the locker for Sam's journal - There Was Nothing Wrong.
4. Grab the key next to it.
Enter the door on the far side of the room and through the door opposite it in the hallway to go into the bathroom. Pick up the bottle by the tub and put it down for Sam's journal - Dealing With Roots.
5. Go back through the room and downstairs. Turn a sharp right at the base of the stairs and enter the door. Open the closet door just inside to the left and pick up the paper for Sam's journal - First Day of School.
6. Continue down the hall and enter the door on your right at the corner, then through the door on the far side of that room. Go around the partition in the center of the room and look for a panel low on the wall in the corner to your right. Remove the panel and toss it aside, then examine the show flyer for Sam's journal - Adjusting to the Dark.
7. Return back through the previous room and into the hallway, entering the door diagonally to your right as you re-enter the hall (don't hook around the corner to the right) to enter a blue-tinted TV room. Examine the book to the left of the TV for Sam's journal - Big Gold Star.
8. Exit the door you entered for the TV room and go straight ahead down the hall. Enter the door to the left before you reach the curtains, and turn left inside the room to open another door to a closet. Read the letter between the shirts hanging in front of you in the closet - Sam's journal - Default Friends.
9. Exit the closet and the room and turn left in the hallway to reach the curtains. Open the bottom drawer beside the curtains and read the note for Sam's journal - Best Laid Plans.
10. Turn left from the dresser, enter the door, and go down the stairs to the basement. As you enter you'll see two boxes in front of a covered couch. On the back side of the box nearest you, between the boxes, examine the drawing for Sam's journal - It's Different Now.
11. Continue to the right from here (to the right from where you entered) and around the corner to the furnace. To the left, read the letter sitting on the box for Sam's journal - Ship Date.
12. Continue around this direction, behind the wall that the furnace is on, to see a door cracked open. Enter it and examine the scrap on the wall for Sam's journal - I Can Sing.
13. Turn around and exit this room. Enter the room 90 degrees to your right and grab the postcard directly in front of you for Sam's journal - Stick With the Group.
14. Turn left from the postcard and follow the corner around to the right to reach a set of stairs. Turn right into the room at the top of the stairs and read the letter on the desk for Sam's journal - Getting Lonnie.
15. Continue past the desk through the door behind it. Look for a folder on the table to the left of the couch. Close the folder first, and examine the scrap beneath it for Sam's journal - The Nunnery.
16. Turn left from here and head down the hall into the dining room. Look on the far side of the table to your right for a folder. Open the folder, and examine the note first (top), then the slip (bottom) for Sam's journal - A Very Long Phase.
17. Continue to the other end of the table and through the sliding door. You should see a half open door in front of you. Head left around the corner and down the hall. At the far end, in a small alcove down low on the wall to the left of the small table, read the crumpled note for Sam's journal - Dedication.
18. Go left from here when facing the note and around the corner, and enter the door on the left to a laundry room. Go through the far door into a greenhouse-like room, and on the far side to the right of the door, examine the map for Sam's journal - Live Moves On.
19. Turn around and go back through the laundry room into the hallway. Follow the hallway around to the right, then left and into the half-open door to reach the kitchen. Read the story on the table with the blue cup for Sam's journal - Daniel.
20. Go through the door on the right to leave the kitchen and through the next door into the garage. Grab the hat off the bike's handlebars and put it back to get Sam's journal - Just Gone.
21. Grab the milk carton from the recycling bin and back up to the door where you entered by the bike. Look up at the ceiling for a purple ball and throw the milk carton at it to knock it down. Pick up the ball and carry it with you from now on (drop it to open doors and such, and pick it back up after). Leave the garage back through the kitchen. Go left when you reach the hallway and follow it around to the left past the couch you closed the folder by earlier.
Open the door past the couch (pick the ball back up) to reach the entrance area of the house. Open the secret panel to the left of the bookshelves, which are to the right as you enter this area. Go inside and grab the attic key off the box. You'll get Sam's journal - In the Attic when you get the key.
22. Come back out, making sure to grab the ball again. Go up the stairs and down the hall to the right to find an open door with a nerf basketball hoop hanging on it. Aim at the top of the 'backboard' and press to dunk a basket and get the secret journal, Mitten's journal - Meow meow meow.
23. Continue around the hall to the left until you see the attic hatch. Before entering it, go through the door to the right and open the drawer behind the painting easel. Examine the note inside for Sam's journal - Lie to Mom and Dad Situation.
24. Go up into the attic now, and examine the drawing sitting on the green sleeping bag for Sam's Journal - I Said Yes.
25. Then just open the album to the right on the table to end the game and unlock Speedreader if you've managed all of this in under 10 minutes.

Somehow, I missed the hat in my “under 10” playthrough but this still popped when I returned to the main menu. I wonder if they carry over as long as you unlock the secret one each time?

Great solution and thanks for posting it here in this format. After a normal collection to find where everything is, it was almost second nature to run through it under 10 only glancing back occasionally (except for missing the hat obviously). Thanks!

So much better than the video, got it first time using this, thank you! Can also confirm that, as others have said, opening the secret panel by the stairs to get the attic key first is a good idea, it saves messing about with the purple ball later on. I also used one of the small cans rather than the milk carton to dislodge the purple ball, I found it much easier to control, and less likely to miss and bounce off the rafters than the carton; I got the ball dislodged first time using a can.

This was really helpful, thank you! Much easier to follow than a video (I suppose that's partly a matter of personal taste, and I usually prefer text guides anyway, but this one is particularly clear IMO).

Only thing I did differently was opening the secret panel and grabbing the attic key before heading upstairs for the first time; that way there's no purple ball to worry about at that point.

A tip for those having trouble getting that wretched purple ball in the first place: I personally found it slightly easier with the soda can rather than the milk carton. It's a bit smaller, so seems to be less likely to hit the rafters and bounce off. That might just be me though.

Also, after my first (failed) attempt at this runthrough, I started a nothing playthrough, went straight for the garage (I think I had to first get the basement key from the bedroom locker and go through the basement to get to the other side of the house), and practised getting the ball until I had a pretty good idea of where to stand and where to aim. Probably saved me just under a minute of useless throwing in my real runthrough.

Anyway, thanks again Trimbler, this is an awesome guide.

I know it's kinda reinventing the wheel, but I made a 100%-in-a-single video for those that prefer that sort of thing. I've also included my step-by-step text guide from the walkthrough here, below the video.

Timestamps:
00:07 - This old house, Nesting Instinct, Intuitive, Wet Blanket
04:32 - Homerunner
06:05- Speedreader and Meow meow meow
14:23 - Behind the Scenes

From the start, open the cabinet, grab the duck, grab the key, and open the front door. Grab folder on table to left for Sam's journal - At the New House. Go upstairs and turn right, open cabinet low to your left and grab the item then put it back for Sam's journal - Hanging Out With the Girls.

Go up the stairs and down the hall to the right to find an open door with a nerf basketball hoop hanging on it. Aim at the top of the 'backboard' and press cn_A to dunk a basket and get the secret journal, Mitten's journal - Meow meow meow. You'll also unlock the achievement for this one, Meow Meow Meow, if you haven't collected it before.

Continue around the hall to the left until you see the attic hatch. Before entering it, go through the door to the right and open the drawer behind the painting easel. Examine the note inside for Sam's journal - Lie to Mom and Dad Situation. Go up into the attic now, and examine the drawing sitting on the green sleeping bag for Sam's Journal - I Said Yes.

Then just open the album to the right on the table to end the game and unlock Speedreader if you've managed all of this in under 10 minutes. You'll also unlock Letters to Katie if you haven't completed the game with the 23 main journal entries (not counting the meow meow meow secret one) before.

Hey guys,

Just to confirm - haven't seen it on the thread elsewhere. The game has the 'modifiers' menu, which altering will void the achievement. However if you go into 'Options' and then to 'Graphics' you can turn the brightness right up which greatly improves visibility for some of those dark corner where collectibles are. I can confirm this DOES NOT void the achievement.

Hope it helps! Thanks to Maka91 for the guide!

This is more a tip instead of a complete solution, there are enough good working ones already.
But if you got trouble navigating the house, go to options, then graphics and adjust the brightness to the highest possible setting. This will make it way easier to find your way in the house and you won't ever get lost again :)

If you give a negative vote, please explain why so I can work on or change your problem.
Sorry for my English, not my native language.

You must start a "New Game" and then pick up all 24 journals (including the secret one) and complete the game in under 10 minutes.

There are many ways to go about this, but for simplicity, the optimized path is shown below:

Before interacting with the book at the end you can view your journal using to ensure that you have all 24 entries.

A wonderful video guide, but before using it, enjoy the game, it’s not difficult, it’s a bit boring, but atmospheric:

I played via remote play and watched the video guide at the same time. As soon as I found a recording, I paused it and looked where the next one was, and so on until the finale, they gave me the trophy.

As far as I understand, you need to play without pauses, I looked at the guide, wrote down all the locations of the diaries on a piece of paper and completed it in one go.
