How to unlock the Playing Doctor achievement in Grand Theft Auto 3 - Definitive Guide
The Paramedic side mission involves picking up patients in the Ambulance and dropping them off at the hospital within the time limit. To start the Paramedic missions you need to steal an Ambulance and then press to start them. These missions can be completed in any of the three islands.
In total there are 12 levels of the Paramedic missions you must complete in a single attempt. Each level gets progressively harder with more patients that require picking up. You are awarded a short amount of time each time you pick a patient up, as well as additional time for the first drop off at the hospital for each level. Below is a list of tips which will help you obtain this trophy as it can prove to be quite difficult.
- The Ambulance can hold a maximum of three passengers at one time. So use this to your advantage in the higher levels.
- The Ambulance takes damage if you drive recklessly, and if destroyed you will fail the mission.
- Use to brake and not as you are less likely to lose control and roll the ambulance.
- Try and stop the Ambulance as close as possible to each patient to reduce the time it takes for them to get inside. You can save a few seconds each time if done correctly.
- Group your pickups of patients together to avoid unnecessary backtracking. At the start of each level I pick up the closest three patients whilst keeping an eye on the location of the remaining patients. This allows you to plan your routes and pick ups which will save a lot of time.
Below are a list of strategies and locations in which you can unlock this trophy. By far the easiest is the use cheats, but feel free to use whichever method works best for you.
Strategy 1: Portland
Complete the Paramedic missions at the very beginning of the game in the first island, Portland. This island is the easiest to navigate with numerous shortcuts through street blocks around the hospital. If completed early in the game you won't have to worry about getting shot by enemy gangs which will damage and destroy your ambulance.
The downside to this island is the small amount of time you will receive after dropping patients off at the hospital. It will range between 00:05 and 00:30 seconds. As such, planning your patient pick ups is crucial so you don't waste any time.
Strategy 2: Staunton Island
This island is a fair bit bigger than Portland, but it is a lot flatter with straighter roads. The hospital is located at the southern end of the island near the construction site and stadium. You will always be shot at by the Cartel near the hospital from when you first arrive on the island. This can prove to be problematic as they can quickly damage your Ambulance. The point at which you have to drop off the patients can be tricky to get to as well. I found driving down the stairs from the road the quickest route, but you can easily damage the Ambulance doing it this way.
The plus side about this island is the amount of time you are awarded for each patient pick up. This usually ranges from 00:45 seconds to 01:30 seconds. Pick up all the closest passengers first to net yourself around 03:00 to 04:00 minutes which makes the remainder of the level quite easy, you will just need to focus on not destroying the Ambulance.
Strategy 3: Cheats
There are a number of cheats you can use which makes this trophy extremely easy regardless of what island you wish to do it in. Using the health cheat will repair the ambulance to full health. This is really helpful as the handling can be woeful at the best of times are bound to destroy the ambulance before you even reach level 12. The car handling cheat is by far the most useful, it prevents your car from toppling over and allows you to take any corner at full speed without worrying about losing control and crashing. The slow down time cheat is also useful as it will help you to avoid collisions with other vehicles. The below video shows a walkthrough of level 12 with the handling cheat activated. This gives you an idea of how the cheat works and how much easier it makes this trophy.
There are three tips that will help you get this trophy and continue on your way to platinum
1. The car is not stable, a coffin on wheels, honestly. Do not accelerate too much, only take turns at low speed, the chance that you will roll over is very high, anywhere. Don't cut across lawns!
2. Brake using the brake/reverse button (default ), but when the speed is very low and the car does not start to turn with the handbrake, we use the handbrake all the way (by default RB). The car is very fast to drive backwards, if a patient gets in behind you, you can crush it and waste time.
3. Complete it in the first city, immediately after saving is available (after Luigi’s Girls). When you start stage 6 and beyond, start collecting from a small exit (unless of course there is a rep), all the patients there are compactly located, which will help quickly per entry dial time (1 - 1:30 min. depending on the bonus).
1. The car is not that flimsy. Yes, it will smoke (and a little later it will smoke), but this is not fatal if you drive plus/minus carefully and at full speed do not fly into the head of another car. Around the 7th-8th wave, when leaving the hill, I turned over twice. So much so that the game gave me a bonus for the trick. But nothing, I got to 12th and didn’t explode.
2. Around 3/4 of the wave there will be a drawdown in time. Ten seconds or so left. This is normal, no need to restart anything. If you choose wisely, the counter will always show 1.5+ minutes.
3. Ignore it if you aggro a star. One burns out very quickly, and the cops are not particularly zealous.
4. A good bonus will be “children’s” experience and basic knowledge of the area. This will save valuable time and protect you from accidental mistakes.
5. Brake on R1, otherwise the car may go backwards.
6. Do not wait until the patient is fully seated in the car. Especially those guys who sit in the back doors.
7. The siren doesn’t really provide an advantage; it’s more of a nuisance.
