How to unlock the Going Rogue achievement in Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually not that bad once you have the right set up.

First of all, I’d HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GET THIS DONE BEFORE THE GANGS BECOME AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS YOU. I did this only while the Triads had beef with me, it was manageable.

I’d recommend the basic police cruiser, they are fast, easy to control and kind of durable. I’d also recommend to load up on Uzi ammo, as you can drive-by the cars to also kill them. If you don’t have access to the Uzi at ammunation yet, you can collect hidden packages until it spawns at your hideout. You can collect as much ammo as you need from the hideout, just grab, go around the block and come back, Uzi and other weapons should respawn.

Drive by controls: (a little tricky, but you’ll get the hang of it)
cn_LB shoots, then you swing the camera towards where you want to shoot, left or right side of the car. (You can also use the cn_X/cn_B buttons for drive-by).

PIT maneuvering the people also helps, goal is to get the people out of the car as fast as possible. Drive-by can be dangerous if cars explode, the radius is pretty big and can damage your cruiser.

Unlike paramedic, if you lose your cruiser, you get 59 seconds to find a new police vehicle to continue the minigame.

Also last tip I can think of, is to pick up police bribes along the way if you see them. It is vital that you don’t let the police wanted level get too high, or else this becomes a lot more of a headache. The highest mine got was 2 star which is manageable, but I often brought it back down to 1 by picking up bribes.

If you make enough progress during vigilante, you’ll also unlock bribes delivered straight to your hideout. You can grab these along the way if you need a lower wanted level during the chases.

I can’t be the only one having trouble with this, I get to like 5 and either my car catches fire and I can’t find another one or I have to chase an infernus and can’t even catch it. How do you get the fast cars? +1 on the solution because there are some good tips but I just can’t do this.

I did this specific achievement on the Portland island, it’s a little luck based with what cars spawn. I’d assume the easiest cars to chase would be on Portland.

Also, you don’t have to do 15-20 in a row for the 60 total. You can do like 5 (4 times) on Staunton Island and it’ll count towards 20 on each island. I did the 15 in a row for this achievement in Portland before the Mafia became agro.

Well got hit with the bug where you randomly explode by hitting a ped while killing the 14th suspect. Now I can't even get a cop car anymore. I ram into it over and over and the door won't budge. The other parts are also way more resilient than they used to be. Sometimes they won't even move when I ram into them. Tried aggroing some on the streets and I get instantly busted. If I try to kill them first my bullets don't do any damage despite being locked on.

Edit: Still hit with the bug but with enough persistence I'm able to get the doors to pop. All you need is for either the front or back door to get damaged. Even if it doesn't come off and if it's the back one, the front one will be unlocked.

Also I would point out a glitch I learned from HatredCopter838 to get unlimited uzi ammo. Find 20 hidden packages to unlock the uzi pickup at your crib, park a car in your garage and everything you enter and leave the car without leaving the garage, all pickups will respawn.

Here are some vital tips:

1. For unlimited ammo, I tried TheBoxyBear's method of entering and leaving the car without leaving the garage and it didn't work. Instead, park a police cruiser in your garage. Get inside and start the vigilante mission and immediately end it. Then get out of the car, leave the garage, and grab the ammo. Rinse and repeat.

2. Have a police cruiser in your garage. When your current one blows up, quickly get to your garage and grab the new one waiting for you.

3. When you hold LB, your character will fire out of your left hand window. Simply pull up to the right of the criminal and hold LB until the criminal's car blows up. I had a lot of trouble using the right stick and X/B to aim. Just hold LB.

Im One To Envy, you're definitely not the only one. I've tried so many different ways. Beginning of the game after grabbing 20 hidden packages. Getting to Staunton before doing the Sayanora Salvatore quest and getting an FBI car since it can be resprayed and repaired. Doing the Arms Shortage mission and using the glitch to get the Rhino early. Still can't get past level 10 before some random shit like my tank flipping over ruins it. I think I'm going to have to use glitches to get it, namely starting over, getting to Staunton & Shoreside early, getting 90 packages for the M16 and seeing if that works. I've never been so exasperated by an achievement before.

I have attempted this twice getting up to 15 on Portland in a single Vigilante mission and hasn't triggered upon getting the 15th straight. Even if I was outside of the cop car and got back in, still didn't trigger.

Can confirm, drive-bys were the most effective way for me.
I did this while gangs weren't hostile and I was just in Portland.

@TheBlackDragonX, yes definitely a combination of both. It pretty much depends on the luck of the situation. Slower cars were easier to take down, sometimes I needed the Uzi to shoot faster cars.

I did all 20 kills first try in Portland after I had finished the game so had all gangs hostile to me as well. I did so by using the Rhino tank and other than certain things you have to watch out for I found it way easier than using the police cruiser.

Things to watch out for:
- Main thing with the Rhino is it's not really about catching up to the criminal as that would be difficult or impossible in some cases (as the Rhino can't go very fast) but to plan an intercept route. This worked the majority of the time for me.
- Sometimes when going for an intercept the criminal did a u-turn so pay attention to that and if it happens do a u-turn as well as like I said trying to catch up will most likely not work
- Avoid destroying/shooting when unnecessary to avoid a wanted level. You'll most likely have a wanted level at some point and what I did is I took advantage of having finished a criminal next to the hideout, grabbed police bribes (at the hideout) and continued on
- When going slower be mindful of either police or gangs getting you out of the tank. Think I had it happen with gangs but not with police so it still worked out

Went for the Rhino after seeing the tip from @NotAnother8ob so thanks mate!

Got to level 13, had to switch police cars twice after they got destroyed. Way too many fast cars due to bad RNG. Does anybody feel like there’s a lot more pedestrians and vehicles on the streets if you’re playing on Series X? This might be a lot easier on dead streets if you have an original Xbox One.

Edit* Got it. With luck because I only had to chase one sports car, and a handful of moderate speed cars. Only had to switch vehicles once and no unlucky flips from a hitting a curb or some BS. I definitely recommend the uzi, along with ramming cars and spinning them out. The uzi helps to catch them on fire and of course finish the person off once they bail, before they try and jack another car.

Just encountered the strangest bug I've ever seen with this achievement.
Got my 15th kill and the achievement popped. It was my first achievement of the day so I then opened the rewards app to claim my 50 daily rewards points for getting an achievement. Went back in to the game and ran the vigilante to 24 straight kills. Then I looked at the achievement list to realize that Going Rogue is still showing as locked(uncompleted). I'm even looking at my notifications>recent achievements and its showing that I unlocked it. But in the actual achievement list for the game it's saying I didn't pop it.
300k+ GS and I've never seen this happen before.

Isn't using the Rhino easier? You can get up some decent speed by aiming the turret backwards and constantly firing. Unless they changed something.

I'm still trying to unlock this achievement. The tank is great, but it's slow and I keep running out of time chasing them down. I found a much easier method is just using a police car and an M16. Jump in front of them or pit them then jump out and spray them. The M16 reticle doesn't lock on to anything so you can easily just hit your intended target. In my opinion Staunton is the easiest map if using an M16 because by the time you can get an M16 you can't drive all around Portland in a car and survive. Uzi causes vehicles to explode too. Maybe a few times with the uzi, but I wouldn't count solely on the uzi.

Edit: I finally got it using a police car and drive by shooting like this guide suggests. M16 and rockets help greatly, but drive by is the way to go. I did it Staunton the middle island. That seems to be the easiest place to do after the gangs become hostile. I did it on a save before Catalina, the final mission. After Catalina, the Cartel weaponry will take out a vehicle quick.

Extra tip. Instead of getting a new police car when it is about to die. You can use your own garage as repair shop. When u are close by. Very handy also with missions.

I can highly recommend to do it on Staunton Island ( second island), with the Tank.
I´ve just unlocked it an hour ago.

Here’s what worked for me. I had an uzi, but only used it when time was running out. The uzi attracts too much attention. Not having a star rating makes it much easier to manage. I used the police cruiser to knock them off the road and then ran them over when they got out. Often times they will get out early, making it significantly easier. Some are stubborn and no matter how many times you hit them, they’re not stopping. That’s where the uzi comes in. You will need to replace the cruiser about every 4-5 takedowns. I recommend swapping out the car at the police station when you’re given a criminal with a longer clock. Some you’ll get as much as 3-4 minutes. It’s still annoying and took me a number of attempts. But I found it easier than using the uzi.

Ya I gave up on the rhino for this achievement. Much better to use the police car and a uzi. You can fast swap through your camera to despawn cars which helps with traffic. It’s a speed running trick. The rhino is just too slow and you get stars like crazy which doesn’t help

I think it is much easier to ditch the Uzi and just try and pin the criminal by running in to them. They'll get out so you can run them over. This avoids getting a wanted level. You'll only have to switch cars maybe 3 or 4 times, so I recommend storing one in your garage as a freebie. Other than that, don't pass on the opportunity to get a new car, and this is pretty doable

Just another tip obviously you want to have a car parked in your garage for use when you need it, but you can get a second one primed and ready by going to the police station on the first island and getting into one of the police cars parked outside. They seem to be unlocked more during the day (maybe not though). Once you are in the car, just move it so it is parked facing out of the exit and get back out. Then just shoot some people to get a wanted rating. When a cop drives past he will stop, get out and try to arrest you, when he does just jump into his car (not the one you parked) and speed off to start the mission. Provided you don't change cars, the one at the police station you parked will still be there when you need it, unlocked and parked nicely facing out the exit. You then have the contingency of this one and the one in your garage. I actually only used one car for the whole 15 and only changed after the 14th because I was right next to the garage anyway. This 100% works on the Series X but I assume it's a cache thing since when you get out a car it leaves it where you got out but if you change cars a few times the first one de-spawns, not sure how many it 'remembers' before despawning the first. On the X1 it may de-spawn the car you parked sooner but on the series X it stays for as long as you want provided you dont jump in a bunch of other cars.

I've noticed if you hold LB to shoot the Uzi while just driving with the camera facing forward you will shoot it to the left side of you. So it's probably ideal to get the target on your left that way you can just hold LB and still be able to drive the car without worrying about crashing into anything because you have the camera looking left or right.

Tried cop car and uzi. Kept failing.
Tried Rhino. Too slow.
Tried cop car. Ramming, uzi and or rocket launcher. Got it in a few goes.

Its an ok guide but too much focus is on ustilising the uzi. When I focused mostly on drive by shooting I got absolutely no where. In my opinion the uzi is not that useful and using your car to ram the criminals vehicles off road and get them stuck on walls etc, to force them out of cars, is far better. I would still have an uzi as a back up but once I changed tactic I had far more success. In my successful run I shot less than 50 uzi bullets.

Strong suggestion, waiting until you have access to purchasing the rocket launcher/100 hidden packages. Utilize the fact that they will not deviate path, unless rammed super tough (in which they flip completely around), or if they reach an intersection. You can predict their path, park, rocket. Get back in. Keeps your vehicle healthy, and it's much quicker than trying to UZI all of the vehicles.

I pulled it off on the third island, since there are a few dead ends that they will drive into. But beware, the tunnels suck, but the AI seem to kill themselves more times than not in the tunnels.

UZI the ones that you can't get ahead of.

By chmccarthy on 17 Nov 2021 17:47
I did this one after completing everything and collected all packages. I did this on Staunton Island and I didn't have to change my police car at all. I would definitely advice people to use the Rocket Launcher, if you get ahead of them or make a shortcut so they come against you and can get a clear shot - just don't use it everytime since the police will be up your ass and be careful you don't destroy your own car in the process.
Except for that you get plenty of time on Staunton Island, it's only fast cars that can be tricky. I used the driveby method most of the kills and mixed it with the rocket launcher. I drove carefully when I could so I didn't ruin the car. Most of the time you make some shortcuts and can still get to it but go ham when you get close to them. I also recommend try and drive into their sides and collide them. It will give you a clear shot at them and sometimes they go out of their cars.

I only got a pair of fast cars so I guess my RNG was good too

Having finally gotten access to the tank (Rhino), I can confirm that it's not worth using for this anymore since the control scheme got updated to link the turret with the camera. In other words, if you want to aim the turret backwards for speed boosts, you'll have to have the camera pointed backwards too.

Kind of a shame, as speed boosting in the tank was ridiculously fun.

@AHGreg, the achievement didn't register until 2 days later which was weird. It registered quicker on the PS5 when I got back in the cop car after getting out to kill the current criminal. I was in the cop car both times when I had done it on the XB1 as I was able to stay in it for the 15th. The strange part is when it did show up 2 days later which was yesterday (12/10/21) but was showing I got it back on 12/8/21. Thinking that the syncing with certain achievements with the game may be affected/glitched.

Ramming the cars was defiantly the way to go for me, only time I used the uzi was when it was a Van. Gotta get the cars to a complete stop before they get out though.

One thing I tried was waiting until the 2nd Island and storing two cop cars in my Safehouse garage. Then I would go find a cop car and if my car became damaged, I'd just go to my garage and swap cars, even grabbing some bribes if I had Wanted levels. By the time the new car was damaged, I could go back to my garage and swap again and the bribes would also have regenerated again. Super simple.

I did this on the 2nd island. Grabbed an FBI vehicle (spawns at 5 stars) and put it in my garage with another police car. The FBI vehicle is a bit faster and it seems stronger as well. Just would pull up next to people and blast away with the uzi while trying to steer them into a wall. I also occasionally would send them flying off bridges by ramming them to the edge. When it's a large vehicle like a semi or a box truck you pretty much have to unload the uzi since they can just send you flying. The second you see them on fire try and move out the way. Your car gets a bit healed up with every criminal you eliminate. Also try not to worry about time too much as the time will change between encounters (for example, killing a criminal with 3:00 left may have its time reduced to 1:30 on the next level).

I was able to get this achievement on Staunton Island (the 2nd Island, after Salvatore's "Last Requests" mission).

I was able to get 20 Vigilante Kills in a row, and only switching my Police Car twice (once because I was too damaged, and once after flipping my Police Car and there being another nearby, luckily). I ONLY used Police Cars.

When I was at about number 9, I had a suspect car spawn near the Police Station, so I used the opportunity to grab a new Police Car as mine was damaged pretty bad, but I wasn't sure how close it was to blowing up. Don't do this unless you have enough time. The suspect was close to the Police Station anyway, and I had over two minutes to get him.

I tried on Portland (the first Island) a lot and couldn't get the achievement done, so I waited until Staunton Island. I'm glad I did because it was a lot easier on Staunton.

The ONLY weapons I used were the Micro SMG (for drive-bys) and a Sniper Rifle for one kill because one of the suspects got run off a cliff (away from me where I couldn't get him), he flipped his car, and was running to a parked car (yes, the suspects CAN carjack other cars if they get theirs blown up - it's rare, but it happens).

I'd also recommend to have no more than 2 Wanted Stars when going for this, as I would always get overwhelmed when getting to three to four Stars. If you have to, use either a hidden Police Bribe along the way, or if you have time, go to your hideout and get Police Bribes (at some point after suspect number 10 when I got the third Police Bribe delivered to my Hideout, I had a 3 Star Wanted Level and grabbed the three Police Bribes I had at my hideout).

It's a bit of a pain to do, but it is possible to get this using the Rhino. It took me about an hour to get it done. After completing the emergency vehicle list, purchase the Rhino. Start in Portland.

1) Use shortcuts! The one from the hospital to the import garage saves a lot of time and aggravation, but the trees can get in the way. Also, going south from the hopital toward's Joey's garage can help. Sometimes, your target get in that loop, making them easier to kill. The shortcut from Redlight to Chinatown has a police bribe. The radio station parking lot connects Saint Marks to Hepburn Heights. Cut through the lot where you get Maria and the El Diablo phone missions. Try to cut corners, but do not do inclines. You can flip the tank and end your streak.

2) Don't try to chase your targets. Intercept them. The area of Saint Mark's will end your streak quickly if you try to go up the hills. Instead, track them on the radar and intercept them when they come down the hill, towards you.

A bug from the Ps 2 version does not work when you click on the menu, in my opinion the easiest way, taking into account the updated controls, you need to stock up on cartridges for the ultrasound, and approach each criminal’s car from the right side and press L1 until the car starts to burn, the main thing is don't overdo it so it doesn't explode prematurely

The tank is the easiest to pass, at the end of the game it will always be on the second island at the military base (where we carried out an assignment for a military man with one arm)

Take a rocket launcher with you. She often helped out when she came at you (he came out and blew him away with a rocket). Good supply of ultrasounds. I often changed my car at the police station (you have to almost blindly know where the station is).
I haven’t tried it with a tank, because... I lost it. You can stir it up after the storyline by taking away 6 stars from the warriors in the rating.

I have my own version of completing these missions. When you get the Uzi, we start trying to pass. If the car is damaged and there are 3-5 minutes left to reach the goal, then we rush to the garage, repair the car and then move on to the mission. During the task, you can leave the car for 60 seconds. I managed to complete the mission 3 times.

You don't need an ultrasound machine or a rocket launcher. The trophy is made simply by being one of the first on the first island without firing a single shot - we just ram it from the side and try to squeeze the criminal’s car. After he gets out of the car after stopping, we push him and drive on. Don’t forget to do some repairs in the garage from time to time or change your cop’s car near the station; there’s usually plenty of time to spare.

A pause no longer stops the bandits. I advise you to have a Kalash with you, it is the fastest way to saw up the cars of criminals. Repairs, if necessary, can be done in the garage of your home.

An ultrasound from a car will work poorly if the bandits are on something jet-powered. Only if on straight lines.

The tank is too slow for 2-3 areas. Maximum will come in handy in Portland. Moreover, in the remaster it is no longer possible to lock the turret in the “backward” position to accelerate

Let me generalize.
There are several ways to complete this task:
1. On a police car using ultrasound. Approach the criminal from any convenient direction. Click , so that the camera turns and Claude starts shooting to the right; - to the left. - fire. Moreover, if you just click on , then Claude will automatically shoot to the left without turning the camera to the criminal's car.
2. Using a ram and blocking the criminal's car. But keep in mind that criminals’ cars are often faster than yours. And it can be difficult to catch up with her, much less ram or squeeze her. Also keep in mind that after the criminal leaves his car, he can get into another and drive away (as happened to me personally).
3. Using a tank. The tank can also be obtained in several ways:
- steal from the military at wanted level 6 (the tank will be locked, you need to make the military get out of it. You can steal it and hide it in the garage. The tank will be saved).
- after completing the “helping hand” mission, the tank will be parked at a military base. It will also be closed. You will have to push it to the garage, where it will be stored, after which you will be able to get into it. It's long and very tedious.
- after completing the last story mission, it is freely taken at the same military base.

Please note that the tank is quite slow. And catching a criminal with its help will be problematic. The best option is to combine the first two methods. It is better to repair the car in your garage, because police cars near the station are not always open (at least that was the case for me).

Made on the Enforcer police van (taken from the police station of the second island). It is fast enough, at least to catch up with a criminal, it practically does not kill (I was not able to break it in 15 races) and it is most convenient for them to ram cars. This is for handy people like me who can’t properly hold down a bunch of keys to shoot from the side. It took place on the same island, there are no steep climbs on it, there were no rocket launchers (although sometimes it wouldn’t hurt).
