Variables affecting Respect :

Territory Gained +3.0%
Killing a gang member (Includes police) +0.5
Killing a dealer +0.005%
Killing a member of your gang -0.005%
A member of your gang gets killed -2.0%
Territory Lost -3.0%

You can also get respect boosts by passing missions, winning bets (casinos,...) and wearing green clothes (See Binco and DS). You should unlock it naturally while working your way through End of the line anyway.

Think you can also receive respect from the 100 Spray Tags scattered around San Andreas..

Another way of getting it is getting the 100% completion.

You'll most likely get enough respect just by finishing the main story and a couple of other achievements anyway

I was gambling to get my money up, when I passed 1 million I gained respect, I cannot find any other source to back this up, but it worked for me.

I think there's a typo:
Territory gained is +3.0%, not +30.0%

My stats had it at 100% and the achievement didn't unlock. It wasn't until I moved to another gang zone and started shooting a couple more gang members that it finally popped. So just a heads up to anyone, I think maybe the numbers get rounded up or something and it might say 100% but not quite be there completely.
