In order to unlock all the animals for the director mode you will need to collect the Peyotes in the game, there are 27 Peyotes in the game and only 21 animals to unlock, Solobrus22 has confirmed that you do not need to collect the 6 underwater Peyotes as you cannot use them in the director mode, they are numbers 6,12,13,21,22,23 of the below guide.

You do not need to collect them all again if you've already collected them

In order to unlock an animal you will need to pick up the Peyote using

which will spawn you in the body of an animal. You can either play out your experience until death or hold

to end your experience, upon returning to Micheal/Franklin/Trevor the animal should unlock.
You might only have 21 out of 22 unlocked as Solobrus22 notes that's when their achievement unlocked.
TangerineGamer estimates this takes around 3 hours.

Once the animals are unlocked enter story mode and press

and scroll right using

to the 'Rockstar Editor' menu and press

to enter. Choose 'Director Mode' from here and accept the launch.

Click actors and pick an animal from the animals menu.

Once the mode loads the achievement will pop, here's a video (https://www.trueachievements.com/DeaDLyxCaNaDiAn.htm notes that it might not pop straight away, they had to also return to the story mode)

Loading up director mode with any animal will also unlock

Alright thanks guys. I can confirm it too. I already had 27/27 animals-peridots and started all up as stated in the solution. Then it showed 22/22 and I unlocked it straight away after I picked one.

just to add to my previous comments:
in the director mode actor list. If you select animal. you get a list of animals (of course).

any animals on the list that you haven't unlocked is marked with a "??????". the question marks turn into an animal name when you pick up the collectibles.

If you count all the animal names or "????" on the list, its 21 total. I still don't understand why the game says /22.

This achievement is not unlocking for me. I have 21/22, but have collected all the plants that are not underwater.When I go to director mode there are only 21 animals in list. The achievement is not unlocking when I go to director mode or exit back to story mode.

Impossible for me to say.
the thing is people unlock different animals at different places. I have looked at many youtube videos and where people unlock stag for example,i unlocked dogs, cat or birds instead…

As with all other collectibles. If you don't know what you missed. Start over. Only solution.

There was a lot of people not unlocking achievements on xbox one the last 12h. I would recommend waiting. And trying again if it doesn't pop within 24h.
( i did 10 story related un missable achievements in 3 different games yesterday, without achievement unlocks, but xbox saves the progression and unlocks it later )

i spent today going around collecting the 21 peyote plants, but when i entered director mode and chose an animal, i didn't get the pop. nor did i get the chievo after exiting to story mode. my last resort was to force quit the game (

to the home screen, hit

then hit quit), and start it up again. fortunately it popped once i entered director mode as an animal, after the restart.

The manual save before you started shouldn't effect the unlocked animals you have already should it? Maybe you can load that up and collect the one that messed up the first time to hopefully unlock the eagle?

The deer peyote plant at the baseball park didn't count when I ate it, now I'm stuck at 20, revisited the plant with all three characters. I guess the next step is to eat all the underwater plants and hope it resets. Really annoyed :/

Damn! I collected all peyotes on a previous playthrough. Even though I still have a save game with 100% completion, the editor shows me all ????? for the animals. It seems this game screwed me once more and I have to get those peyotes all over again.

Not sure if this was mentioned: Due to an update, I guess additional underwater plant life was added and number 23 in the guide is now hiding under some Turbinaria Coral reef type plant thing and not only is it difficult to see but just as hard to eat. I know the underwater ones aren't needed but for those who want to get them all anyway be aware.

TRN SwitchBlade, I'm at 27/27 and 21/22, and it hasn't unlocked for me as well. I haven't completed Location Scout yet, so I'm not sure if that's an issue, but yeah, it hasn't popped for me.

Tried multiple restarts, force quits, and tried to get 22/22, but I guess I can't because I'm a killer.

I collected all of the plants (not the ones in water) and none of the characters unlocked for me? I checked my stats and it says only 1/27 were collected. I cant pick any of them back up because now theyre gone. And the achievement wont unlock. Can i fix this dumbass bug or is the achievement just not attainable for me anymore

I've ordered the locations, so you don't go back and forth between the map, here's the order for the 21 needed for the achievement using the guide from the gamesradar site above:
3-8-1-9-25-4-16-17-26-27-7-10-15-18-19-20-24-11-14-2-5

I suggest getting a buzzard from the Vespucci helipad and going to the locations in order, as some of them can't be reached without a helicopter.

Well, seems this achievement is bugged for me. Got all land peyotes (and a few water). Sitting at 24/27. Went into director mode as an animal....nothing. Rinse and repeat about 6 more times (going back into story mode each time), still nothing. Really starting to dislike these bugged achievements for this game! It randomly unlocked for me after I went into story mode and shot a random animal....Go figure....

I have something to add:
There are 27 total. But you not need all.
In the link you provided 6 of them are underwater. When you pick up the Peyote you start hallucinate being a underwater animal. In the Editor itself you cannot choose underwater animals, meaning these shouldn't be required for the achievement.

6,12,13,21,22,23 are underwater.

I did pick up 6,12,13
but I didn't pick up 21,22,23

Even though i didn't pick up those last 3 underwater, i got the achievement.

As long as you already have them collected on your save, you shouldn't need to do it again.
Just enter "Editor mode", select actor and animal. Your list should be full.

For example, on my save since i had completed all missions i had all singlplayer actors unlocked. Since i hadn't met all random people only a few was unlocked.

I've got the achievement and it popped with 21 out of 22. The 22nd one in the list will not appear on my screen, scrolling down from 21st takes me back to the top of the list, but look at the cryptic wording of the achievement. It says

"You unlocked all animals for use in Director Mode... or did you? (Secret)"

That, to me, implies you got what looks like the full list (as you can't scroll down to the 22nd) and it gave you the cheev for it, but there is still another animal out there. With how many strange secrets there are in GTA, I wouldn't be surprised if this was some mythical animal like a unicorn or something, or something ridiculous like a dinosaur. I originally thought it might be an alien (with the whole 50 ufo parts side quest and the ufos flying around the game) but there is an alien costume available already in director mode.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

I have one that glitched on me, the hawk. The plant was at the bell's atop mt. chilead, I got it, but it must not have saved. Now it's not in the list, and the plant is gone. Do you know of any way to reset them? I tried a different console, it still wasn't there.

Well, I didn't have any manual saves while I was collecting them, but I did have one before I started. So, I can either go back and collect all of them again, or try TangerineGamer's suggestion and collect all 27. So, the good news is I'm not screwed entirely, but still have to do some work.

I collected all 21 land animal peyotes, went to director mode, as a cat played, went back to story and no cheevo.
Even closed the game and restarted after repeating the same steps and still no effect.
Edit: nvm, got it without my knowledge.

I have a few tips to share:

firstly - anyone having problems with #23 -> disable any 4K graphics in the settings of your console. this resolved the strange coral appearing over the plant.

secondly - the game is having trouble with the quick resume feature on XSX. if you've collected all 27 plants and get the achievement, but it won't sync 'cause it's "not" unlocked (which happened to me): visit a nearby peyote after restarting the game, enter director mode and choose an animal. this will net you the achievement.

lastly - if playing on next gen (XSS/XSX) be aware, that the game can bug out. save before every last collectible and mission, so you can revert back to an earlier state and get the achievements (happened to me with the bail bond targets - all delivered alive, same procedure as above (glitched cheevo) and now I have to start a new playthrough just for this one achievement).

hope this helps someone having the same issues.

Ok, so .... here's a playlist with all the peyote plants locations and according to Solobrus22, you only need the non-underwater plants :D
Best is to save the picture from the website to your computer cause it's pretty big
BTW, i don't intend to get credit for the picture and youtube vids cause they belong to SXGaming :D

For anyone wondering if all 27 peyotes are needed – couldn't find the one at 12:54 but looks like you don't need the underwater ones. Got stuck at 26/27, went into Director Mode, selected the Cat and it unlocked as soon as I spawned as the Cat.
