How to unlock the Somebody Call the Wambulance? achievement in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

For this achievement you need to use an ambulance and rescue a total of 78 wounded people. You will need to drop by at the hospital at least 30 times, depending on your driving route(s).
The achievement requires you to complete all 12 Paramedic levels, which will take about 45-70 minutes.
Finishing this achievement and objective is also one of the requirements for the
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive EditionDone it AllThe Done it All achievement in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition worth 267 pointsEarn 100% completion.
After finishing this Vehicle Mission (Complete level 12) it will add 1% towards the total game completion percentage. Ingame reward for completing: You will never get tired when running!

There are 4 hospitals in the game. For this achievement the Ocean View Hospital will be used, as this hospital provides the easiest rescue locations/routes. The hospital is located on the starting island, in the Ocean Beach area. An ambulance can be found on the parking spot at the hospital.

Some tips:
1) Activate the sirens, by pressing left-stick (cn_LS), this will make traffic a little bit less of a problem.
2) Drive carefully, the ambulance cannot (!) be repaired. It can handle a lot of damage but it can still be risky. On one of my attempt the ambulance blew up in level 11 because it was damaged all the way, failing the attempt.
3) Don't kill any wounded people by car incident, if this happens it will fail the run.
4) Make sure to often check the map, so you can use the most efficient route(s).
5) The ambulance can only carry 3 wounded people at max.
6) Every wounded person that enters the ambulance will add a X amount of seconds towards the running timer, the added time will be the same for every person in each specific level.
7) During every level you will get extra time added on the first drop-off at the hospital. This will be the same amount as what you get for the rescues of people. This will start from Level 4 onwards, as you need at least 2 drop-offs.

Level 12 on GTA III is very frustrating. I'm hoping it's not so hard on VC.

Nice guide as far as location goes. I saw some other video using a different hospital and he was running all over the beach on hills with that tipsy ambulance, I didn't like that option.

^ Look who's there at it again. Being salty as always, what a surprise. Obviously it depends from time to time if you get the 1% added or not, in my playthrough I got 1% added each time after completing a vehicle mission. 1% or +/- 1%, I guess you are the only person making a big deal about it and giving a thumbs down. Great job.

Lol are you still upset over that negative feedback, because by the looks of it you are as it didn't even take you 10 mins to comment.

And if you had any real knowledge of how much % adds up, you wouldn't base your beliefs from cheap Stats screen lol

You really had to reach to find a negative there. Complaining about a few decimals. Rounding up the percentage is preferable for most anyway.

It looks like there is current issues on XBL regarding achievements unlocking or not. People have been unlocking this recently, it might be delayed unlocks.

The real challenge here is to keep your ambulance in one piece. Drive slow and also avoid running over cops.

Great Guide, although my percentage didn’t go up. I did this even before going to the safe house for the first time. And it was still at 0% after completing. I just hope I didn’t do them to early 😅
Still a thumbs up from me 👍🏼

First time I got to level 9 and a random car pulled in front of me and ripped the ambulance 2nd time I’ve done it and it finally got there but didn’t add 1% to my stats but I’m still early in the game lost on the pizza one earlier on the last pizza level 10 by about 4 seconds 😩😭

I sure do love it when an entire military team opens fire on my ambulance for literally no reason other than the fact that this is such a well-made and fair achievement! I love having my tires shot out by a random gang! What a well-made and balanced game!

Got to the end of level 10 and pressed up on the d-pad by accident. Give me strength.

I didn't have any problems when i did the Ambulance missions in original but I've having a really hard time doing this right now. I failed at level 11 twice (by accidentally running over people) once at level 12 (Ambulance blew up) once during level 4 (military team open fire without any reason) and by accidentally pressing up on d-pad

Got it first try. If you’ve done paramedic missions in GTA 3, then you’ll find it easier imo, bc first: nobody is shooting you (2nd island thing in GTA 3), and second: vehicle handling is better. Again, use RB when taking the corner, put siren on an you should be good. I’ve often ended with few spare minutes, maybe not so much as in 3, but still I had more time than I needed. And 12th level is straightforward, patients are places in such vicinity that it was a no-brainer for me. Never had a need to drop 2 patients just bc of patients placement. Good luck

Great guide and some good tips that are worth reading before starting, got this first try. The ambulance does take A LOT of small dents, I wasn't all too careful when doing this. Although can't say for any serious car smashes...

PROGRESS: 1% added towards the total game completion percentage

^This is incorrect. Every mission completion is worth 0.65% of the completion percentage. This is like to say there's only 100 total missions in the game each awarding a 1% but if you was to complete say Firefighter next after Paramedic, you wouldn't be at 2%... you would still be at 1% or 1.30% to be exact

If you do this early on (I did it after maybe 2 missions) I'd say this is about the same difficulty as GTA 3 early in the 2nd island minus the fact you have to avoid the construction area in GTA 3 to avoid gangs. A few tips that helped me in both games:

1) This is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself and don't rush.

2) I spent almost all of my time at half speed and only gunned it on straight aways with no cars. Going slower gives you time to wait for cars to react to your siren and if you do hit something, you don't careen out of control. It will also help you avoid killing pedestrians when the sidewalk is the only viable option. (Cops didn't seem to mind if I crippled someone, but death was a no-no)

3) From level 4 and on it's best to pull up the map and plan how you can do things in "groups of three" so your route is as efficient as possible. Save the more spread-out options for later when you have your time more built up. (Sometimes weaving for a group of 3 is best, sometimes going for 3 spread out along the same road is better; trust your judgement)

4) The beginning of each level was the most stressful for me as I only had 60-90 seconds to get my first pickup. I usually went for the closest group to build up some time so I could safely get the further groups. I think I usually ended each level with 2-4 minutes to spare.

5) Once the victim "touches" your ambulance (begins to open a door, starts to hop in a doorless side) they are essentially glued to you and you can move on without them falling out. It's not easy to describe but it's very easy to understand once you see it in effect.

6) I don't know if actually makes a difference, but I feel like jamming the regular and handbrake made me stop faster than either one individually. This let me stop on pretty short distance when going up to victims and stopped them from running to me too early. If anything, an NPC would face plant on my backend because I stopped too fast but that was ultra rare and more an error on me braking too early.

Hopefully this helps someone out. I was definitely dreading this in 3 and Vice City but it truly wasn't all that bad once you realize taking your time is most important! You may lose some seconds from going slower but the time it saves avoiding catastrophic crashes or an exploding ambulance is invaluable.

This is the most time consuming achievement of this game.

It requires a MINIMUM of 30 minutes & could easily take you an hour. All in one go.

You need to drop off patients a minimum total of 30 runs, if you maximize efficiency. By this I mean always making sure you pick up 3 patients at a time after level 2.

1 drop off for levels 1-3
2 drop offs for levels 4-6
3 drop offs for levels 7-9
4 drop offs for levels 10-12

I highly recommend taking 5-15 minute breaks after 10 drop offs, that way you don’t lose focus & start driving recklessly to get it over with quicker.

If you capitalized on the checkpoint Charlie bug mentioned in other guides for this game, then you can save doing this mission for AFTER you “100%” the game. This way all vehicles have double health & provides more breathing room.

Keep in mind you cannot patch up the ambulance at a pay n spray, nor can you leave your current ambulance for a fresh one mid mission (like you can for vigilante).

I got this achievement on my first attempt doing everything I outlined above.

As other guides have mentioned: DRIVING SAFELY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN DRIVING FAST!!!
There is ample time given & I never dropped off patients with less than a minute to go.

Something important to note is cars drive on sidewalks to avoid you when sirens are on. This could kill a patient if your sirens are on when a patient is too close to an NPC driver…only turn your sirens off when near patients but leave them on for the rest of the mission for optimal driving.
Be warned that some cab drivers & most police cars will ignore your sirens & potentially even drive hostile (swerving lanes randomly when near you).

Now go get that achievement, you legend!

Some things which aren't mentioned in the other guide but I feel are worth pointing out;

- It is FAR more important to drive carefully than quickly. Despite there being a time limit, it's pretty generous after the first few pick ups, and you are more likely to blow up your vehicle than run out of time. Make sure you plan the most efficient route before setting off from the hospital to try and pick up as many patients as you can. I finished Level 12 with over 6 mins left despite not playing the game for 20 years.

- Extending from the above point, avoid hitting police cars or running over pedestrians infront of police cars as much as you can. You do not want any wanted level while doing this.

- USE THE HANDBRAKE. The Ambulance is quite a stiff vehicle to turn, so using the handbreak makes the sharper right angle turns a breeze. Also I strongly advise using both the brake and the handbrake at the same time when stopping for patients, to avoid accidentally reversing into them.

- Make this one of the first achievements you go for (it was my first). The reward is definitely worth it (infinite sprint) and with only the first island unlocked patients won't be so spread out.

- As a warning, I'm not sure if this is a bug in the game or if it's in my head but I found that the traffic starts to misbehave in the later levels, driving into you more, police cars not moving out the way, stuff like that. Even sometimes driving into patients! This is why it's super important to drive carefully more than quickly. Seriously, you'll have the time to do so!

Good luck!
