To start a business with the Merchant, you need to obtain a Trade License. You buy the Trade License once you have reached the rank of 'Rightful Citzen' at your church.
Once you have the trade license, head to the village on the day that the Merchant appears and hand it over. He will then open up a little room just behind where he normally stands and give you more instructions and information on how to grow the business.
If you are a super prepared person, it's good to have your gardening and alchemy/book making set up properly back at your home base as it will make the follow-up trophy to get a 5 Star business easier.

Note on this one. Dont make the same mistake I made and upset him . Otherwise he will demand 1 gold coin to be able to use his land.

This will be following the story path for the Merchant. After the dinners, he will suggest that you work together with him to market the produce and products you make on the farm to get in the graces and hushed whispers of the Royal Court more easily. A trade license will be required from the Royal Post (the box to the left of the church) to unlock this feature, but it will allow you to sell these things every Gluttony (the day the Merchant comes around).
*NOTE: Do not leave the money in the box for more than a day. There are instances where the money will just simply disappear, meaning you'll have been paid, didn't collect it, and perhaps the Merchant ran off with it. If you've made a few boxes and the Merchant has come and gone, go get your funds.
