You don't need to win the race. You need to score the 3,000 points to proceed.
I was struggling with this one. I couldn't work out how to damage the other vehicles for enough points.
The van you drive is slow but you can get all your points by side swiping / t-boning the cars.
Don't worry about the other vehicles. GO FOR THE CARS.
Use your boost only when you have a car lined up in front of you, ideally just before a straight and just drive full head into the side of them.
You should have enough points by lap 4 or 5.

I believe it is 3000 damage. Good to note that you don't have to win the race.
