I just wanna add that the dark area you want is directly down from the turtle "egg" that's holding the six locked star holes (if you go any further left from the "egg," you'll take the passage to one of the areas (the tree one) needed to obtain a star). Once it gets dark, just stay pinned to the left wall, and in my game, after the first horizontally swimming fish, I entered a completely dark tunnel which quickly becomes light blue in the background, which is the tunnel leading to the statue. Once you're in this statue chamber the achieve should pop.
