How to unlock the Thorn of Thanatos achievement in Hades - Definitive Guide

To unlock this achievement, you must first acquire the pierced butterfly keepsake. You get it by giving nectar to Thanatos, who you'll run into pretty early on in the game.

Once you have the keepsake, you must get up to a 30% damage boost during a single escape attempt. You make the percentage go higher by completing encounters without taking any damage. It is very challenging to do this initially because you only get 1% per room at first. If you are struggling, my advice is to keep the butterfly on you until it levels up, preferably to its 3rd level which will give you a 2% bonus per room. Once you have a fully powered butterfly keepsake, you will need to complete 15 separate encounters without taking damage during a single run. Just be patient and play safe and you should be fine.

One final tip, I did this using the Chiron aspect of the bow and arrow so I could keep some distance between me and the action. However I'd say you could do this with anything that helps you maintain distance, such as the Rail, Spear, etc.

Something is a little off with this keepsake for me where it just arbitrarily stops getting stronger despite me clearing encounters while taking no damage. Stopped at 29% on my last run, and now it appears locked at 22% for my current run. Either it's glitchy, or there is some kind of hidden cap on the amount of encounters you are given to do this before it just stays locked.

It popped for me the first time I pulled off the requirements so i'm not sure what's happening to you guys. I know that people are having issues with achievements if they use quick resume during a run, but other than that I have no advice, maybe it's glitchy? I'd say try again, but I know that's frustrating advice to hear when you know that you've done the requirements correctly. I hope you guys (or someone else for you) can figure out what the issue is.

Actually I think the issue I was experiencing may be because the small encounters in Styx don't count (for this or the sister achievement where you have to get up to 20% dodge chance). I was clearing some of those in about half a second with the dodge keepsake equipped and wasn't getting progress. However, when I finished the boss encounter at the end of one of the paths, it gave me progress. So I think maybe those small fights in the little rooms in Styx don't count as "encounters" whereas the bigger fight at the end of the path does.

Ah that could explain it. Odd how the rules aren't applied consistently. But I'm glad to have an explanation at least.

Unlocked first time for me as soon as I got to 30%, I always force close the game after finishing while playing on the XSX.

The 'Flurry Shot' boon made it fairly easy for me, go to 34%.

Ugh. I was able to get to 30% on one of my runs, but it didn't unlock.

Man. They need to fix the glitchiness of these achievements.

Lv5 Aspect of Zagreus Spear for me, with Demeter attack boon. Stunlocked things and kept them at a distance.

Want to say you don't need to keep your distance if you're good with a specific weapon. I just got it with the fists (!) on my first attempt, and not even an ideal set of boons.

Yes, the examples I gave were basically a bunch of "if you're struggling" choices. With enough skill, this could definitely be achieved with almost all weapons and aspects

Also use the Skelly companion a lot in the later encounters to draw attention away.

First Attempt with the Shield and Aspect of Zeus maxed out, 34%. Use your boons to upgrade your special and Athena's Boost Deflection and you're golden. The shield special will one hit almost everything in tarturus and asphodel.

Drop the shield on an enemy, boost around the room keeping your distance and dodging ranged attacks, recall shield. Repeat.

Achievement unlocked.

Does the butterfly stop stacking once you reach Styx? Keep getting to Styx and not taking damage but it doesn't go past like 22% really frustrating

If I remember correctly, the small rooms in styx do not count, however I think the final room of each path does count. (I could be wrong though, basing this off memory)

If you can, fully upgrade Rib and call Skelly for rooms that you think might be difficult. The enemies will focus on him until he dies.

Does need to be done consecutive rooms? or 15 rooms within the entire run? can i get hit and still continue in the next room to try hitting 30%?

Haven't touched the game in awhile, but if i remember correctly, the rooms do not need to be done consecutively. You can test it yourself by failing to get the bonus in a room and then seeing if you can get the bonus afterwards.

You get it by giving nectar to Thanatos, who you'll run into pretty early on in the game.
I'm like 20 hrs into the game and still haven't come across this NPC

Very strange.... I remember that Thanatos isn't always in the House of Hades (similar to other characters who may or may not appear after any given run)

However, if you've played 20 hours and have never even seen him, that seems like something is broken. I offer no solution other than saying that I haven't heard of anybody else having this problem. So perhaps it's your personal file?

In case you don't know where he usually would spawn I'll put it in here. Thanatos will normally spawn (if he does) to the left of Achilles at the end of the hall near the administration chamber (or a door that says locked if it hasn't opened for you yet)

Hope you figure it out! :) (feel free to ask any more questions you may have)

Does this have to be done in consecutive rooms?

Haven't played in awhile but I believe that it does NOT have to be consecutive rooms

No, this doesn't need to be done in consecutive rooms. The first hallway when you start your run counts as a room/encounter as does the final chamber of the satyr tunnels in Styx. Rooms with no enemies (like the shop or exclamation point people) and the small chambers in Styx don't count. If you aren't sure whether you will get the bonus, the butterfly has a shine on it when you are eligible to get the bonus.

Thanks for the hint, that the final rooms of Styx count for this. Was at 28 %, when I found Kerberos' bag.

Some additional advice:
- Damage over time effects that trigger when you dodge (e.g. Ares' blades, Dio's poison clouds) can be very helpful, especially in crowded areas with opponents that can't rush, but swarm you
- Hermes & Athene are probably two of your best friends here. Both have gifts that can help you to avoid damage.
- Poseidon has several gifts that push opponents away, which also is rather helpful, when you don't want to get hurt

Can't go beyond 26%. Very frustrating. Always an enemy spawning at my Blindspot when I thought I had found a nice camp spot to spam distant attacks. Elysium enemies and rooms are ridiculous. Traps everywhere and enemies that take forever to die

Finally got this. The easiest way for me is the Railgun with the Hestia Aspect I had it at Level 4. After that just manually reload and use normal attack, which pretty much one shot the early enemies, and pierces through armored enemies on the end level. I even got through the Fury fight without getting hit this way.

PS: This aspect does an overpowered shot each time you manually reload. Stack it with boons that boosts basic attack and watch the enemies fall like flies. I paired it with a Demeter boon that caused chill and the enemies never got near me.

Ranged weapons are your best friend for this trophy, even though you can go with any weapon you feel confident with. I also advice you to first level up the Pierced Butterfly to level 3 in order to obtain maximum bonus (%2) for each room.

If you are struggling with this, just turn off the auto-sync option for the game and manually upload your save file after every successful room. That way you can download and replay the last room whenever you screw things up.

TIP: I recommend waiting to do this until you've max ranked the Pierced Butterfly Keepsake to level 3. It will be much easier.

The Pierced Butterfly is a Keepsake given to you by Thanatos (see Something From Everyone trophy_bronze.png) and it gives you +1/1.5/2% (rank 1/2/3) damage for each Encounter you clear without taking damage. If you do it at rank 1, it will take you 30 Encounters without damage to reach 30%. This is definitely challenging. As mentioned in the tip above, it's best to try this with your Pierced Butterly maxed at rank 3 instead, because with 2% per room, it will only take you 15 Encounters without taking damage to reach the required +30%, which is definitely much easier than 30 rooms.

In case you aren't certain whether you've taken damage or not, on the left side of your screen underneath the Keepsake icon, there will be two circulating lights that indicate whether you are still eligible for the bonus +% for that Encounter or not. If the lights disappear, it means you've taken some damage in this room and thus the Encounter you're in will not count towards the 30%.

Once you reach +30% bonus damage (specifically from the Keepsake; extra damage from other sources will not count), the trophy should pop. You don't need to do anything with that like kill mobs with it, just reach that level.

Even just needing 15 Encounters with no damage taken, this is still going to be a hard trophy to complete. The best tips I can offer are:
  • Do not use the Pact of Punishment! Why make things harder for yourself unnecessarily?! Also, try to get this done before you reach the 4th biome, the Temple of Styx. This is because in the Temple, rooms are counted differently; only the final room in each tunnel/pathway counts as an Encounter for this Keepsake. This means you won't get any bonuses for all of the rooms you do leading up to the 4th and final room.

  • The best weapons for this are: the Chaos Shield, the Heart-Seeking Bow, and the Adamant Rail, although the Shield is my personal favorite. If you're unsure or having troubles with this, the Shield is your best bet. You can block all attacks using the Shield, and blocked attacks count as no damage, so that will honestly drop the difficulty way down, if not outright trivializing this trophy. Alternatively, with the Bow or Rail, you can stay back and pick them off from afar. The Shield's Special also gives you ranged attacks. Either way, whichever you choose, feel free to play it safe; there's no timer for this, so take your time if you need to.

  • Go for Boons that will protect you or help evasiveness, especially Athena's Deflect Boons, as they're definitely helpful in preventing damage. Deflect works very well with any weapon, but extra well with the Chaos Shield and the Heart-Seeking Bow. Especially with the shield! Chaos Shield + Attack/Special Deflect = Easy mode! It's even better if you use the Shield's Zeus Aspect (its 3rd Aspect; see Infernal Arms trophy_silver.png for more info) with the Special Deflect. For the Bow, try to get Deflect for your Special (triangle.png) rather than your Basic Attack, as the wide spread of arrows in your Special is really good because each arrow will Deflect. Hermes' "Greater Evasion" Boon is also a nice addition as a just-in-case, as it gives you a chance to dodge on hit, although that shouldn't be depended upon.
