How to unlock the Chief, Smash! achievement in Halo 4 - Definitive Guide

Fire up Mission 8 - Midnight at Rally Point Bravo and make your way through the mission until you come through a portal which brings you to a room full of weapons. Here, you will see the Gravity Hammer which obviously you need to pick up and equip.

Move through the next Portal where you'll see a Promethean Knight awaiting your arrival. Take him out first and then prepare yourself for a Gravity Hammer smashing Crawler triple kill. Purposely move into at least three Crawlers in order to make them swarm and try to bite you. With the right timing, take a swing with your Gravity Hammer and successfully wipe out three Crawlers at once.

Doing this correctly will instantly unlock your 'Chief, Smash!' achievement!

Please note - There have been reports of this achievement being a bit glitchy for some and not unlocking. It doesn't seem to be a major glitch so if the achieve' doesn't unlock on your first attempt, reload the last save and give it another go.

You might want to add that this one is a bit glitchy. I successfully killed three a couple times before the cheevo actually popped.

Couldn't get any to group up until a "defend" waypoint happens, and then had 5 in a tight corridor

Thanks for the tip. as I was finishing the campaign on Legendary I got lucky just before I jumped through the portal.

Actually, it is better if you wait until after you defend and retrieve Cortana from the console rather than trying to take out 3 during the defense waves. Once you retrieve Cortana these turrets come online and start attacking the crawlers reducing their health. On Legendary there is a lot of crawlers on that bridge, and they are too busy attacking turrets to notice you. I just waited until I saw a group of 4 or more and used my hammer.

I recommend walking up the bridge to meet them. They don't jump around as much and a couple swings should nab you the achieve.

This requires far too much luck. Tried about 25 times. The crawlers absolutely refused to cluster up like that even once, they come at you in ones or twos and since you cant kill them until three are near you die quickly on legendary.

After trying for 20 minutes or so to do this at each section of the level, I got to the point where Cortana fires up the lazers and attacks the crawlers.

Still attempting to do it and failing I gave up. Knowing that the crawlers are easy to kill by mêlée, with the Gravity Hammer equipped, I started mêlée-ing them.

POP Achievement Unlocked!

Surprised me, but I was definitely mashing RB and not pulling on RT and must've hit 3 of them within a certain amount of time.

I've no way to confirm this though, I only run one account. If someone new is trying to get this, try both ways, see what works, let me know.

Ok I did it at the bridge section where you have to defend. I waited just at the spot where the incoming enemies land to smash them right away. I tried this first with a friend on heroic but he is not a very good Halo player and could not help me killing off those enemies that were at the sides or slipped off and attacked me from behind. But I had several occasions where I killed at least 2 and thought it was 3. Then I did it on normal alone at the same place. This time I brought the Hardlight Shield with me which was a huge help. I thought I had killed 3 but cheevo did not pop either. I waited for a short moment and suddenly there were a lot of enemies swarming around me. I activated Hardlight Shield to survive all the attacks and then went all out. Somehow I must have hit 3. This time I had not the impression but achievment unlocked. But activating the Hardlight Shield definetely helped to gather them around me without dying too early.

Got this by quickly hitting 3 enemies separately using RB like TENBAPPS said. I killed the first 3 crawlers that jump up from the bridge during the defense part and it unlocked.

I can confirm TENBAPPS's trick of using the melee button instead of the shoot button. I got frustrated after failing over and over to smash 3 at once, so I hit 3 of them with the melee button one after the other instead and I got the achievement.

Currently cleaning up Halo 4 achievements after they announced the servers will be closing next December so I'm also verrrryyy late to the party, but as of December 2020, killing the crawlers using TENBAPPS's method was the way I finally popped the achievement on heroic. At one point, I swear I hammered 5 crawlers but it wouldn't pop. I killed the first 6 or 7 that jumped from the bridge druing the defense section after like 15 minutes of spamming LB. Hope this helps someone.

Partway through the level, you will be presented an armory. Obviously, you'll need to pick up the gravity hammer for the achievement. You will need to kill 3 crawlers (dog looking creatures) with one swing within Mission 8. Right after going through the teleport, you can catch 3+ crawlers near each other if you're fast enough. Otherwise, just take your time, and get to the part of the level where Cortana will ask you to "defend". At this point, let the crawlers come to you, and you shouldn't have a problem finding them in a group of 3.

Or wait a little longer (once you've got Cortana again) and there'll be a ton of them between you and the next portal.

Everyone seems to have their own little methods to share, so figure i'll share mine, got it first time, no trouble,

right, so as you teleporter hopping, make sure you pick up the hammer from the room full of weapons, you'll know it when you get there, and carry it through.

You'll get to a point where you have to make a stand and hold off a certain point where Cortana is doing something in the system, as soon as you get the order to stand ground, run towards where the crawlers are coming from, you'll meet three of them about halfway between their spawn and your point to gaurd, they'll instantly crowd you, swing and boom, Chief smash!

for the record, i was on normal difficulty, and i waited until my shields were jsut about down to make sure the crawlers were close enough, any harder and i think you'll die too quickly for this method to be effective

Sooo much easier than the room straight after the weapons room. During this defence section i must have had 6 crawlers swarming around me, piece of piss. Thank you.

Here is my guide from my channel, Toslow Gaming. Load up Rally Point Bravo, on the mission Midnight. Sorry if I said Composer. then your going to need to play for a bit. Once you get to the weapons room, grab the Gravity hammer. Play for a little more, then you'll be defending. Attack the crawlers in groups.

This is just an addition for anyone attempting to get this achievement during a Legendary playthrough like I did. On Legendary difficulty, often only a direct hit to a Crawler with the gravity hammer will actually kill it. So getting three at the same time is nearly impossible. However, I found out more or less by chance that if you hit three Crawlers and they either are destroyed OR go flying off a bridge after one gravity hammer swing, then the achievement will pop. So, right after the "Defend this area" objective, you will start moving across a long bridge full of Crawlers toward the portal out of there. You should get a checkpoint right before that, so just run onto the bridge into the pile of Crawlers while swinging. I was able to kill one and make three more fly off the bridge for the achievement.

This can be a tricky one. Here's how I did it:
1. Choose level: Midnight - bravo
2. Apply skull: Cowbell (fact: increases GravHammer radius and maybe also power)
3. Difficulty: Easy (crawlers die easier)

You need to travel some time through the level. Crawlers can be further weakend by lesser weapons and maybe some armor abilities. on your way there are suppressors and auto-sentries, but I didn't bother with these.
When you get to the Gravity Hammer-teleporter-room, also pick up, for example the Incineration Cannon take care of the knights fast. This isn't however necessary. Wait for the checkpoint and portal opening.
Now rinse and repeat: Step through, run and backstab the knight and maybe shoot the lower knight with cannon. Then concider the crawlers, they're always all over you and in the wrong place. I got the cheevo in an umpteenth run, first killing the two knights and then running to lowest level where there happend to be a bunch of crawies so close to eachother that I could see them all at a single glance. I hit the middle one and there it was.

Note on failure: This is a useful spot because it saves before the portal and after failed attempt you can return there with start-menu and ponder on other secondary weapon choices and the crawler spots are somewhat random after few seconds in, so you will need multiple tries.

This achievement takes place in the 8th mission of the campaign, and requires you to kill 3 crawlers with one swing of the gravity hammer. While playing through the level you will eventually be teleported into a room with a ton of different weapons you can pick up, one of them being the gravity hammer. Pick it up head to the next area and get a group of crawlers to bunch up and then swing away and you should have no problem unlocking this achievement.

For anyone still attempting this achievement I found it easiest to defend the area without using the hammer and wait to get the achievement untill after retrieving Cortana. While walking down the bridge the auto-cannons will keep a group of 6-7 stalled in one spot. Just jump above them and swing.

This achievement was kind of glitchy depending on how many crawlers you actually hit with the hammer. I hit and killed 3 a few times, but when I actually got the achievement, I only hit 2. I have provided a video that shows how I did it.

Get Gravity Hammer from the promethean armory, wait for a bigger group of Crawlers and then smash them! Can be done on any difficulty.

Campaign Mission 8 'Midnight' specific. Online not required. Can be obtained on Easy+.
Use 'Mission Select' after initial Campaign playthrough if missed.

The gravity hammer looks like this:

Gravity Hammer

The Hammer is acquired in an armoury room shortly after Rally Point Bravo. Crawlers are the dog looking beasts with yellow-orange flame faces. The trick is to wait until many try to attack you at once, and kill 3 with one swing of the Gravity Hammer.

Right after going through the teleport, you can catch 3+ crawlers near each other if you're fast enough. Otherwise, just take your time, and get to the part of the level where Cortana will ask you to "defend". At this point, let the crawlers come to you, and you shouldn't have a problem finding them in a group of 3 or more.

Glitchy: Can be glitchy. 
The Fix: Just keep at it until it unlocks.
