How to unlock the Benchwarmer achievement in Halo 5: Guardians - Definitive Guide

I was able to get this after exiting to the Main Menu after a social multiplayer match by pressing cn_X to bring up the Friends menu and cn_RB to scroll right to "Recent."
Eventually someone who you were just in a match with will start a new match and a little eye icon will appear to the right of their name. Scroll down to that player and click cn_A to View Options and select "Spectate."

No need to have friends playing the game.

Not sure if multiplayer is dead or if the servers are down. Hoping it's just the servers, 'cause I can't find a soul to match with at the moment.

Took me a couple minutes to find a ranked match, but I found it. I played the whole match, got destroyed, then waited for someone else to start one, it took a while.

I wonder if you could quit out of the one you're in, then spectate someone immediately in that match. Might be easier, but I didn't try it

The other two solutions didn't work for me personally, so I found another easy solution to get this achievement quickly.

Just go on Mixer, check Halo 5 under "Categories", see who is streaming right now and add this person as a friend on Xbox. Start Halo 5, go to your friends and your just added friend should show up there and you can spectate his match with cn_X.

As Microsoft announced to move from Mixer to Facebook, the first solution does not work anymore. But instead of Mixer you can also use Twitch:

Just go on Twitch, search for Halo 5: Guardians, see who is streaming right now and add this person as a friend on Xbox. Start Halo 5, go to your friends and your just added friend should show up there and you can spectate his match with cn_X.

After you got the acheievement you can unfriend the person again redface.

In my opinion the best and easiest way to get this achievement is doing the following steps:
1. Play one match in any mode (You do not have to complete the match, you can leave)
2. Press cn_guide button on controller go to --> people and choose "Recently played with", add any guy from the list.
3. In main menu of halo 5 press cn_X and find the guy you have added, press cn_A and you are able to choose "spectate"

That is all :)

In the Main Menu, press to open up your Roster, and then tap to bring up your friend’s list. In this menu, you’ll be able to see which of your friends are currently playing Halo 5: Guardians. Select the name of any friend who is playing and then then you can choose the option to spectate their game.

Take note, this only works if they are playing an online Multiplayer match! In the event that there is nobody on your friend’s list playing the game, or at least playing Multiplayer, you can always tab over once more to "Recent" and try spectating a game from a player on this "recent friends" list. Once the match begins to load, the achievement will unlock right away.

To receive it, you need to watch a friend's online game. You can enter the list of friends using the X key, select a friend and go to the “Watch” item.
