How to unlock the Worms Don't Surf achievement in Halo 5: Guardians - Definitive Guide
Thanks to 343 tinkering with the AI, the formerly most powerful infantry in the Halo universe now RUN AWAY from you when you're attacking them. Maybe they're afraid you'll do what you did in halo 4? Maybe they didn't really like exploring the floor, maybe they simply just don't like the water.
Anyway, you're stuck. The AI retreat and you really want this achievement. Maybe you have a buddy with you but you're grinding away only ever able to get one down.
Well, I have a solution for you. Tough Luck Skull.
I'm not kidding here folks. TL makes the enemy refuse to retreat in combat, your Hunters will have no cooldown on their melee swipes and will charge at you like the good ol' days of yonder past.
Put it on, come near a hunter and lure him to the edge, either with your buddy or just use your hover near the edge of a ramp so the hunters will lunge off the edge while you're jetting. You'll find the hunters happily suiciding within the first move or two.
Shouldn't take you more than 10-15 minutes using any of the previous methods as long as tough luck is on. Just remember to make sure to save your last checkpoint before you begin in case your AI decide to ignore instructions and attack the Hunters too. Good luck and Happy hunting.
Difficulty: Easy
Nearing the end of the level you will encounter 2 hunters and you will need to knock them off the map by having them swing at you (and miss) or hitting them with a spartan blast as they are very close to the edge. If you are playing solo, make sure that you order your teammates out of the area so that they don't shoot the hunters, but close enough that they can revive you just in case you're downed. Once near the hunters, run onto one of the side platforms to draw them closer to you and the edge of the large platform that they spawned on. Once one of them is close to the edge, drop down in between him and the edge and make him swing at you. Make sure you dash forward so that you don't get pushed off! If he is still on the map, quickly sprint and spartan charge him in order to stun him, and then position yourself in between him and the edge again until you're able to get him to fall off. After the first hutner dies, the 2nd will enrage and be invulnerable to spartan charge stuns. For this one, run back to where you came from and order you AI to push even further back. You are trying to draw the 2nd hunter to the frontside of the platform, and when it is close to the edge, quickly run forward and make him swing at you near the edge. If he misses, run back, refresh and try again. The melee recharge rate of the 2nd hunter is much longer than normally. When they both fall off, the achievement unlocks. If you die or one of the hunters dies, quickly reload the checkpoint.
Hope this helps people struggling to get them swinging.
It can take quite a while, we spent about 35 minutes to do this, all Im gunna say is stick at in and you will get it in the end.
Some people have been saying using Tough Luck skull will make it eaiser, we didn't use it but if you want you can try it and make it a little easier.
Good luck!
The hunters are towards the end of the level and impossible to miss as killing them is required to progress to the next section. The game should give you a checkpoint right as you come up to the hunters.
The main idea is to lure them close to the edge of the platform they're on or the walkways leading up to it, then get them to charge off the edge by standing in between them and it. If a hunter somehow ends up right on the edge, a spartan charge could knock them off as well (do not overuse spartan charges as they do damage and you can accidentally kill them that way).
Getting a single hunter to fall off is already hard, getting both hunters to fall off without being yourself knocked off or one of them dying from a different cause of death (such as AI teammates) can easily take over a half hour, especially if done solo.
However, there's a few settings/skulls you can use to your advantage.
-Easy difficulty, highly recommended as the achievement is not difficulty-specific and makes you much less likely to die from the hunters' attacks.
-Mythic skull (the main reason I'm writing this solution, as nobody seems to have pointed this one out before). It should make the hunters much less likely to die from your AI teammates, and I highly recommend it. You don't have to spend nearly as much time micromanaging your AI teammates to get them to stay back, and they can sometimes even help lure the hunters over the edge. You'll also be much less likely to accidentally kill one with a spartan charge.
Since you're playing on easy, playing through the level to get to the hunters is easy enough even with this skull on.
-Tough luck skull (as pointed out earlier by count023 and shrapnel 117) will make the hunters use their melee attack much more frequently, making it much easier to lure the hunters toward the edges. However, it does also mean that the hunters are much more likely to use their melee attack on you when you're not positioned quite right yet, making it a bit more likely that they'll knock YOU off instead. I would still recommend it however,
-Play with score attack OFF, as playing with it on does not allow you to use the save checkpoint feature.
You might still be able to undo a bad checkpoint after accidentally killing a hunter. Suicide (by walking off the edge), then keep suiciding every time the checkpoint reloads 5-10 times as quickly as possible, and the game should eventually delete that checkpoint and revert to the one you got before coming up to the hunters.
Given the pesky nature of this achievement, it's recommended to try this on the Easy difficulty level so that the Hunters cannot kill/down you in one shot.
By this point in the game, you should be familiar with Hunters in both their appearance and their general combative behavior. Towards the end of the mission, you will be required to make your way to the elevator platform in order to reach the Guardian of Sunaion. After passing through a series of several circular platforms and Covenant forces, you'll find yourself at the elevator platform with a duo of Hunters ready to fight.
At this time, you'll need to trick the Hunters (individually) into charging off the side of the platform. This can be done by standing right in front of the enemy so that the Hunter charges right at you. Lure one of the Hunters to edge, then right before he hits you, jump up and utilize your thrusters to shoot backwards to another platform. If timed correctly, the Hunter will have little time to stop the momentum of his attack and run right off the edge. Make sure to get a good feel of the distance between platforms so that you don't accidentally thruster yourself into the ocean!
Once the first Hunter has been dealt with, the second will become enraged, fire its weapons more aggressively, and not be so oblivious into being lured towards the platform's edge. Still, it can be done with enough persistence and luck. Just use the same method as before to get him near the edge, then when he's about to charge, dodge out of the way by use of your thrusters. If you're lucky once more, he'll fall off into the ocean and the achievement will unlock.
NOTE: If your AI kills one of the Hunters during this section, make sure to revert your checkpoint. Also, it's worth noting that you should probably command your fireteam to retreat to a different platform when attempting this achievement so that they don't accidentally kill the Hunters!
