How to unlock the Speed Reader achievement in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - Definitive Guide

I had a recent review on here but since it was based on a speedrun on the old Halo Combat Evolved, some of you did not like that version and thought it was very different from the new CEA version. Plus the resolution of the first video in my previous solution was not all that great. So I've decided to update a speedrun with a CEA version based on my previous solution's video.

First I would recommend to thumb's up for both of Heavymetal's and Quickdraw's solutions!

I needed a more of a visual walkthrough for this achievement and would like to share the speedrun that I used for a guide. Just follow this video by Mitch3ll (based on Riptor's original speedrun) who completed it at 19:18.

My only suggestions that I can share is to:

- have bandana skull on as suggested before me. Spam grenades and it is imperative for you to pick up a shotgun!

- run through the level as fast as you can to shave off time. If you die the timer resets on your last checkpoint anyways!

- you don't really have to copy the video exactly minute by minute but I would highly recommend grenade jumping since it despawns some of the enemies in certain sections (like grenade jumping some of the doors). Also Rhyolitic has mentioned that it is easier to grenade jump the first wall to the right (right in the begining) on floor one instead of doing the difficult carrier jump. What you do first is throw grenades to kill the carriers that are hiding then go back to grenade jump that first wall to your right and hop into that circular orangy room then grenade jump back to the main hall on the second section where the carrier was hiding (the one you were suppose to use to jump). This should despawn the enemies the same way the carrier jump does.

- something that I forgot to mention that dodi779 reminded me on his comment below is that on top of grenade jumping, you need to... CROUCH JUMP. Basically it's executing a crouch at the top of your jump (if you execute it too early, you don't jump as high). It is kind of awkward when you try to execute it on your controller but with practice it doesn't take too long to learn. This will really help when you need to jump over high walls, especially while grenade jumping.

- there are certain sections on floor 2, 3, and 4 that you can hide back instead of facing swarms of the flood. Just follow the video as a guide.

- I found grenade jumping the last door (right before the end of the level) on floor 4 shaved a good amount of time and avoided the last crazy swarm of the flood. It is a bit tricky since you might have some flood following close behind you. You also need to do it as soon as you get to the door. I would suggest to just spam grenades behind you to kill off some of the flood following you and right when you get to the door as soon as it starts to open do the grenade jump. You can die as many times as you want and retry but if it is too difficult for you, you can just follow the video and take out the swarm slowly.

- also I would NOT use the boom skull since it makes the carriers explosion larger as well! I had it turned on my first day attempts for the cheev and all I can tell you is that I was blowing up and bouncing around like nobody's business! facepalm

- also thanks to "ArchTirannus" for sharing this tip with us. "Before performing the first grenade jump at the very beginning, make sure you step underneath the monitor to make him go to the next 'checkpoint'. If not, after doing the second grenade jump the monitor will not follow you unless you go near him, making the flood to spawn all over the place."

If you follow the video as a guide and use all the shortcuts then you're likely to make the the 30 min cut off time with some required skill and luck. headspin I have to say that this was waaaaay easier for me to get than the "That Just Happened" cheevo since I did that one legit. Hope this helps everyone!

Here is the video that Rhyolitic used by Master RC for the alternative jump which also has commentary!

Credits to Mitch3ll and Riptor from highspeedhalo.net and Rhyolitic and Master RC for the commentary version. I will change the video if there is a better one out but this should be good for now!

I thought that was better than the one you linked. I tried and tried on yours and could just not get that Carrier Form jump in the beginning to work. The one I linked has a couple of regular grenade jumps in the beginning instead. Though you don't really need to use the second grenade jump as you can go to the door and get 343 to move on. Got it first try with this one as opposed to the 45 minutes I spent just trying to get that damn Carrier jump to work.

Sorry you had a hard time with it. Personally I did not do the carrier grenade jump as well. Like I said I used the video as a guide and did not follow everything minute by minute. I'll will make sure to quote your alternative on the solution.

Great video. I did have the hardest time doing the carrier jump but since it's so close, it doesn't take long to retry. After that everything worked like a charm. Thanks for the link.

Overall the method worked...so I'll up vote. Two problems I had was making the second jump in the beginning so I had to grenade jump that gap to the other side. Also, I had to move up to the first set of bulkheads to get the monitor moving forward. When i got to the other side of the wall the monitor wouldn't follow me so I had to back track to get him going. It only cost me a couple minutes but i had plenty of time on the clock to f' around. So if the monitor refuse to follow you just back track.

Hi there guys; after doing the first grenade jump the monitor does not follow me. I am not able to make the second grenade jump but the video says this second one is not really necessary. I do not know what to do for the monitor to follow me without making the flood spawn all over the map.

Can you people help me with this?

Okay, finally I made it. The only tricky part is the very beguinning, as stated in the solutions above. I noticed a couple things that may help you. Before performing the first grenade jump at the very beguinning, make sure you step underneath the monitor to make him go to the next 'checkpoint'. If not, after doing the second grenade jump the monitor will not follow you unless you go near him, making the flood to spawn all over the place.
x Morgan Kane x : You can do the second jump in a coop game (or with a second controller I guess). Just jump over your mate's head and stick him a plasma grenade and jump. By the time you reach the top and he dies, he will respawn by you at the top of the wall. The following is easy as a pie. Hope it helps.
And Templar Punk, if you wanna add this little points to your guide, feel free to do so. :)

I actually found the carrier jump to be pretty easy - instead of facing the wall I'm jumping over, I turn sideways so I can see the carrier coming in on my right. That makes it a little easier to time the jump - you want to jump a split second before the carrier bursts. Crouch a bit at the height of the jump if you have trouble making it to the wall.

Thanks for the video.

Although I can't grenade jump to save my life the route in the video after the first day helped me get the achievement without the need for any grenade jumping.

I made sure bandana was on and spammed grenades in front of me and behind me when necessary. I waited for the doors to open where the video showed. It ended up being pretty easy even with out any grenade jumping. I saved and exited at every platform as well.

The hardest parts were the beginning before the first door and getting through the final door, the rest was really easy and strangely enough after the first platform it gets easier besides the final door.

It's possible to unlock the achievement without doing the grenade jumps, although the grenade jumps will give you more time to play with it's entirely possible to do it without grenade jumping.

Quick question for ya'll: does the 30 minutes count successful checkpoint to checkpoint plays, or the overall realtime count including reloading checkpoints?

I ask because I just played it with a friend in coop, and although we took 46 minutes(0431 to 0517) it still popped for both of us at the end.

Or could it be that it double the 30 minute requirement because there were two of us?

Message me on Xbox live if you're still trying to get this achievement. I think it would be easier just running through with a coop partner (with bandana skulls on, of course). I just can't seem to get those grenade jumps to work! At least not on Legendary, when one explosion is enough to cripple you.

All I need is a partner to run through with me.

As was said above, you don't HAVE to do any grenade jumps. Do the easy skips on 2nd and 3rd floor and rush the rest, and you still have time to fight your way through the first floor.

Got this today by following the videos starting at the end of 1st floor because I can't grenade jump to save my life.

Finally done this shit.

Some advice: Though I dont play Halo a lot, I managed to pull off both grenade jumps at the beginning. It takes a little practice for the timing but is not that hard. Diesel Foley is right: you need to go under 343 in the beginning to make him advance further. In the second video he advances automatically which didnt work for me in several tries. It's also important to note that you need to crouch in the final step of the jump over the gap between the first pillar you land on after the first grenade jump and the larger structure you jump to.

Working on this slowly when I get time. In order to be familiar with the route decided to try running through it on easy. At the very beginning I am able to get the first grenade jump but it takes me down to one health which is then not enough to survive the second one. This happen to anyone else? Considering just trying to fight through the first floor as others have posted already.

Unlike "Never Tell Me the Odds" it's hard to accurately tell how much time you took for a failed run. Could have been 33 minutes or it could have been 30 minutes 2 seconds.

Had my game freeze on floor 3 and lose all my progress, but other than that, I got the achievement just fine following the video.

To summarise:

- Deaths don’t matter - you can restart from a checkpoint and not add any extra time AFAIK.

- Use the bandana skull for a far less frustrating time.

- Pick up a shotgun ASAP.

- At the start of the level, walk to 343 to get him to move and then go back to grenade jump onto the block and over the wall, then grenade jump back up onto the wall from the other side (as shown in the video). This despawns pretty much all enemies in the following areas before the door.

- The first time it says to hold position and wait, head back to the trench and chill there to avoid fighting more flood. You can shoot/grenade any that might come over.

- Whenever there’s a circular room with a hole in the middle, you can jump over the ledges all the way around to skip enemies. You’ll have an easier time crouch jumping though and jumping over the left-most bit.

- Second floor: Grenade jump through the hole in the door after the first circular room mentioned above.

- I think it’s the next two times you wait for 343, just head to the door and round the corner to wait there without enemies fighting you. First time is on the left, second is the right. You can also fight from here - easy enough when you’re spamming grenades.

- Preemptively throw grenades, especially near the lift openings.

- Spam grenades in front and behind you and shotgun enemies. Pistol is good for long range shots. Assault Rifle is good for taking out flood spores, but you can usually ignore them when you have your shield and/or melee them. I’d stick with Shotgun/Pistol.

- Go around to the left of the room and crouch jump over the ledges to ignore the enemies in the index room and get there quicker.

- And of course, just rush through areas and ignore enemies if you can survive. You just need to focus on heading to the next objective. You can get any flood chasing you with grenades.

All of this is covered in the video. Thought I’d just post it as a comment here instead of a solution. Thanks.

i ran it though solo and got it by pure luck and chance while working on my legendary runthrough. Along with the bandanna skull i also had the boom skull for bigger grenade explosions (down side is carrier flood also have bigger explosion range so watch out!!). Its true that the time gets reverted back when you die and go back to your last checkpoint so thats good. Having a shotgun is pretty nessesary and try to get it early if possible to avoid any frustration in the long run and i like to use the plasma rifle as my secondary to spray the little puff balls and carrier forms since it seems like the plasma bolts are atrracted to them.

What i found helpful is to spam grenades way ahead of you (and sometimes behind you incase you missed some flood) to clear out anything around corners that way you just just keep hauling ass and not waste time stopping, killing and clearing the area, and continueing on your way so this should shave a little time off your run by pre clearing areas before you even reach it, but watch out most of my deaths came from my own grenade explosions and carrier explosions. Keep and eye on your radar that will also be important so you know whether to turn around and take out whats coming up behind you (which most the time are the tiny infection puff balls use your plasma rifle to quickly get rid of them. Dont stop to turn to kill them, this will only waste precious time, just keep going and turn to shoot them while continuing running)

NOTE: BOTH GRENADES HAVE ITS ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES WITH BOOM SKULL ACTIVATED. PLASMA GREDANES DONT BOUNCE AROUND WHEN THROWN SO USE THESE FOR PRECISE GRENADE KILLS. ON THE DOWNFALL SPAM TO MANY IN ONE SPOT AND YOU MAY JUST KILL YOURSELF SINCE THEY WILL BE FLYING EVERYWHERE.
FRAGS BOUNCE AROUND WHEN TROWN BUT UNLIKE PLASMAS DONT GO FLYING AROUND WHEN SPAMED IN THE SAME SPOT. REMEMBER THIS WHEN PLANING YOUR RUN ACCORDINGLY!!!

Now the beauty of having the timer reset everytime you die and revert to your checkpoint is that you learn the patterns of where the flood spawns are at. Use this to your advantage. Learn where they are going to come from, take some out, and maybe die, and at least you now know where they are goin to be so you shouldnt have trouble killing them and moving checkpoint to checkpoint once you get the hang of a particular section. Again this gives you an opportunity to learn where to spam the grenades at ahead of time. Just like anything else repition of dying in the same spot over and over again you will eventually learn that area pretty well. When you doubt yourself if you think you are wasting time or messing up revert to your last checkpoint and try again your not loosing anytime after all so might as well learn it and get it right.

When you get to a door that you need to wait at hunker down in a corner and just spam grenades from where you came from and thats pretty much all you have to worry about (apart from one of your own grenades coming back and killing you if spamed to many in one spot or a rouge Flood that you need to shoot)

So just take it slow and stedy it took me about 2hrs to do this but as i said learn their spawns and just revert to your checkpoint so you wont be wasting time. It may be tedious and take "forever" but its worth it if you want to get this achievement.
Best of luck out there!!

Also, when you're going for Did that just happen... achievement map out your ideal run and gun. You don't want to die. When taking the big lifts shave some time off by jumping on to the ledge before the elevator reaches. The real nail bitters are the ones where your stuck and have to wait for the monitor. One in particular is the area where you're totally secluded by the two big doors. I went into the alcove where the two medpacks were and just did a calculated sequence of sticky grenades back and forth. When I was close to the lift entrances I just ran my butt off as if an Agent was chasing me.

Really not that difficult, the hardest section of The Library is the first 1/3. I "accidentally" unlocked this when doing solo legendary. I got to the end and tried to wait so I wouldn't get the achievement haha, I didn't wait long enough and screwed up my achievement order on my gamercard grr.

Watch the video in "GFL K4TSU"'s solution. It helped me, a lot. Rather than run the risk of a two-hour level, I watched the video, twice. Even made some notes (wait here, grenade there, etc.). I took me less than an hour (though close) and I did get the achievement. BTW, grenade jumps work, and they are not that hard to master.

Definately the easiest way to get Speed Reader. Thanks RC Master for the video and Templar Punk for his solution.

The beginning is the hardest part with grenades jumps, after you just have to follow the video and listen to his commentaries.

You can die and reload, the time comes back where you left off at the last checkpoint. I made more than 30 minutes and have successfully unlocked.

Thanks for linking this video. I couldn't duplicate the Flood jump in the top ranked video.

I had difficulty making the second jump at 1:12 (after the grenade jump) and judging by the comments on the youtube page I'm not alone. The key is not to do a crouch jump until at the very end of the jump. If you crouch at the beginning you will not make the jump.

This is the shortest/best walthrough. I used RC Master's video, but I didn't try to make the second grenade jump. I just walked around through the door and walked under the Monitor (per his pop-up comment). Shaved off alot of the time. I'd also like to clarify that you don't need to "reload". You can die as many times as you want too, have the game paused as long as you want/need, and never have to "revert", "reload" or panic. This is was WAY easier then I thought would it be.

Note: Reverting to the last checkpoint will put your time back to what it was when it saved, so dying has no effect on attaining this achievement in single player.

For most people, this is the equivalent of Reach’s Solo Legendary achievement. This is one of the two biggies that puts the list difficulty rating up for inexperienced players. If you’re lucky, you’ll get this in just a regular playthrough. If you’re familiar with Legendary in the Other Halo titles, you might be able to pull this off in 20 minutes or so. Again, always have a shotgun. I also recommend having the rocket launcher whenever possible. It’s good when they start to pile up. Your best bet is to find a good corner to put your back against and just keep your finger on the trigger. Bulk doors will slow you down automatically. If you don’t have a bulk door, you better be moving forward. The Bandana skull will make this easier because Shotgun ammo can and probably will be scarce at times. The skull eliminates the need for that.

Assuming you don't die too often, having a dummy controller can be beneficial as long as you don't have to back-track too much. Otherwise you're probably better off just trying to solo the level for this achievement.

Here are videos for further assistance:
