How to unlock the An Honor Serving achievement in Halo: Reach - Definitive Guide
Edit 4/22/22: See comments to this solution, online services have been deactivated. Most of the cR earning tips no longer apply. Credit to Artie & Snow9369.
Old Solution:
You need to earn a total of 210,000 cR across all modes to unlock this achievement. You do not need to have the credits in the bank, it's a cumulative total.
Here are the ranks to get to Captain (the amount in parenthesis is how much cR is required to get to next rank):
Private - 7,500 cR (+2,500)
Corporal - 10,000 cR (+5,000)
Corporal Grade 1 - 15,000 cR (+5,000)
Sergeant - 20,000 cR (+6,250)
Sergeant Grade 1 - 26,250 cR (+6,250)
Sergeant Grade 2 - 32,500 cR (+12,500)
Warrant Officer - 45,000 cR (+33,000)
Warrant Officer Grade 1 - 78,000 cR (+33,000)
Warrant Officer Grade 2 - 111,000 cR (+33,000)
Warrant Officer Grade 3 - 144,000 cR (+66,000)
Captain - 210,000 cR

cR earning tips:
-Playing gruntpocalypse on Corvette is rich in earning commendations which leads to consist cR bonuses (go to matchmaking, cooperative, score attack. keeping voting until you get corvette which is a small map). Without unlocking any major commendation levels, you can consistently average at least 1000 every 8-10 minutes clearing this just for all the double kills, triple kills, etc. When you do unlock a silver/gold commendation level you'll get a hefty bonus. Some games I was breaking 3000 cR.
-Playing sniper attack on Courtyard is also very rewarding with about 1000 cR each attempt. As soon as the level starts, cross the bridge in front of you, make a right and get to the end of this walkway. You can't be flanked from this position so it's a good place to camp out. If you're patient, most enemies will come at you in waves of 4 which will line up nicely for a one shot overkill. In wave 4 & 5, some enemies can jump or jetpack to your location so just be prepared for that. After a recent update you can no longer pick up enemy weapons in this mode. You will get a lot of multikills on this map. I was getting about 50 per attempt.
-Spamming the target locater on Oni Sword base. Start the level on Heroic and sprint along the right wall to get into the first base where the target locater is (don't kill anyone). Pick it up, get to the back corner on the same wall its located on to trigger a checkpoint. Kill the enemies with one shot, revert to last save over and over. It's been brought to my attention it's also useful to turn on the Thunderstorm skull to upgrade the types of enemies you are facing, so you work on even more commendations (credit MICKERR). You will get a lot of commendations to the silver/gold level this way and you will get a great amount of cR in 1 or 2 hours. Once most commendations reach gold, this method becomes less and less rewarding.
-Play Winter Contingency on Legendary with scoring on and safely sprint your way through the level without dying. When you get to the final room with the four grunts and the sword elite, save and quit. Now resume campaign progress and clear them out, push the button, and skip the cutscene. You should get a bonus commendation (200cR) for beating the level on legendary without dying (Flawless Cowboy). You can then resume campaign and you'll be back in that same room. You can do this about 25 times for a quick 5000+ cR. After that the time it takes to do this isn't worth the small cR in my opinion.
-Daily/Weekly Challenges: These are nice cR bonuses to take advantage of, and usually are fairly easy to obtain. To check what they are for a given day, press start, go to challenges. So far, most of the kills X amount of enemies in firefight matchmaking have been attainable while playing Gruntpocalypse which is nice.
-Play the MP & Campaign! It's a brilliant game, and you are rewarded with cR for doing nearly everything.
Note: 200,000 cR is the limit of credits you can earn in a day. (credit Quarantane)
I will update this with more information, please post comments with other tips for the Reach community and I'll add them to this solution. I don't take credit for discovering any of these methods.

I'll say this...the grind from Warrant Officer Grade 3 to Captain is one long, boring slog. 66,000 credits is just about enough to go from Captain to Captain Grade 3. Why they felt the need to include such a drastic hump in credits earned is beyond me.
By Rhyolitic on 26 Sep 2010 18:41
Just a note Shade they seem to have taken the checkpoint away from the target locater point to stop people spamming it, so glade I did it while I could

There is no real solution for this, but to boost or actually play this awesome game. So, here is a link to tell you where you need to be, and where you are in this big ranking system. Credit goes to RoosterTeeth for the 11th Terminal Easter Egg video and Homjek for the HALO: Reach Custom Challenge Tutorialn, as well.

*NOTE*
Score Attack/ Gruntapocalypse works the best! Easy headshots (Commendation), which is added with the total of the end game. A sure 1,500+ exp with each game.
Thanks to Hans caboose.
I've been exploring to see 'what's the best' and I found that Score Attack/ Sniper Attack/ Courtyard- Respond: Walkway. is the best. I got Warrant Officer Grade 1 and 2 in one day. You can snipe everything from the point with infinite ammo. I hope this helps.
Update (1/11/11)
It's been awhile sense I relied on Score Attack. I highly recommend it, though, if your between the Recruit level to Warrant Officer Grade 2 (Grade 3 to Captain will be your first "Wha? cR Crunch"). But, if your like me, being Brigadier Grade 3 needs more, alot more. New playlists will offer you more Completed Game cR bonus, mostly upto 1,500cR - 3,500cR and you will get a random goody of 3,000cR from the Slot Machine (Community Slayer). I recognized this by playing Living Dead with my lower ranking friend, he gets about 1,500cR, while I get 450cR - 680cR per game, so explore and try new playlists and even try Firefight (multiplayer) for a decent 30min game worth normally around 3,000+cR.
Happy Hunting!
UPDATE! [12/07/2011]
This link right here shows you how to get an easy 100,000cR (first link wit RT). BUT you have to own Halo: CEA (inc all terminals) for it to work.
The other link shows you how to make Custom Challenges for Halo Reach! I've done this a couple of times and turns out that the limit is 10,000cR per challenge. You can only have 5 CC up at once, but you can turn-in when done to make more room.

How are you guys getting so many credits? I just did a round of Gruntpocalypse and got 35 credits...
By GEN TSOsChiCkiN on 18 Sep 2010 04:04
@Duderino: Play Matchmaking & look for Gruntapocolypse/Sniper Attack. Playing normal firefight lobby will only give you about 30-50 cR for playing.
I got about 1700 cR playing Gruntapocolypse and about 1900 cR playing Sniper Attack, although SA was less frequently given as a choice, but GA was always given, I'd say both are the best was to get cR.

The best way to get credits is to load up the 3rd mission on Herioc, RUN to the Target Destroyer, and wait for a checkpoint, then basically shoot the target destroyer back from where you came from, then either reload the save, or kill yourself
**EDIT**
Only worth doing until you have onyx on the "Splash Damage" and the "Walking Tank" commendations.
If you're still having trouble, Follow the HD guide underneath:

You should note that this only works for a while as the credits earned are for progressing in commendations. As your commendations grow, you will earn less and less and eventually the amount earned each time is not worth wasting time over.
By I Am Potayto on 29 Sep 2010 18:46
Agreed with the above; past Gold it seems to not be worth the time investment, especially regarding the bonuses from walking tank. You get all of 15 CR for a killionaire and that's just not a very efficient use of time. Gruntpocalypse works better after that point.

To reach the Rank of Captain you must play online or offline, through campaign mode, firefight mode, or any versus/cooperative multiplayer matching. You start as a recruit and work your way up to captain. The following is a list of ranks from recruit to captain as well as the amount of +cR needed per rank (and total). NOTE: This does not include any bonus cR recieved for purchasing the game. These are not current totals but running totals, so yes your balance can be decieving.

You get credits by playing really any game mode custom games, forge, and firefight you can get credits in them but its like a hour of gameplay for 50 credits. Play Match makeing games to earn credits and do the daily challenges as often as you can since they give a nice boost each day.

How to earn up to 25,000 credits in about 5 minutes, legit
Note: for a slightly more updated solution with some clarifying items, please refer to my "Make it Rain" solution here:
Solution for Make It Rain In Halo: Reach
Tired of risking getting banned for using glitches or other tricks that Bungie is monitoring? Then read on. I spent considerable time reviewing all the solutions on this site, scouring the internet, watching videos and tweaking challenges to develop the best method for earning credits with the least amount of work possible. Although people have posted the ONI: Sword Base target locator trick, they have only discussed the earning of commendations and not how do integrate it with custom challenges.
First, you will want to go to Halo Waypoint and create custom challenges. I will not go into detail about where to find this or set them up – please refer to MrBigShade’s solution (second video) to see how to set up custom challenges.
When you go to Halo Waypoint, you will create 5 custom challenges. All custom challenges you will create should have the following type, time limit and constraints:
CHALLENGE TYPE
Campaign
SET TIME LIMIT (Hours)
3 (this is the minimum)
CONSTRAINTS
MAP: ONI: Sword Base
DIFFICULTY: Heroic (or Legendary)
SKULLS: 11 skulls: Black Eye, Tough Luck, Catch, Cloud, Famine, Tilt, Mythic, Thunderstorm, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday, IWHBYD (select all skulls except Iron and Blind – select all and deselect Iron and Blind)
Create the following custom challenges with the above settings for each and then the following specifics. Note that the max credits per challenge is now 5,000 so I figured out the exact number to set for each to maximize efficiency and provide you, dear reader, with the best outcome possible.
Custom Challenge 1 (4,999 credits in 5-10 minutes)
NAME CHALLENGE
Grunt
GOALS
1. GOAL: Kills of Enemy
2. TYPE: Grunt Hero
3. TARGET: 172
Custom Challenge 2 (4,999 credits in 5-10 minutes)
NAME CHALLENGE
Skirmisher
GOALS
1. GOAL: Kills of Enemy
2. TYPE: Skirmisher Specialist
3. TARGET: 172
Custom Challenge 3 (4,999 credits in 5-10 minutes)
NAME CHALLENGE
Jackal
GOALS
1. GOAL: Kills of Enemy
2. TYPE: Jackal Specialist
3. TARGET: 258
Custom Challenge 4 (4,999 credits in 10-15 minutes)
NAME CHALLENGE
Elite
GOALS
1. GOAL: Kills of Enemy
2. TYPE: Elite Specialist
3. TARGET: 172
Custom Challenge 5 (4,999 credits in 5-10 minutes)
NAME CHALLENGE
Medals
GOALS
1. GOAL: Medals
2. TARGET: 516
Now you want to go in to the campaign in the game and set up your mission as follows:
1. Map ONI: Sword Base
2. Difficulty: Heroic
3. Turn on Scoring! You will not get medals unless scoring is on
4. Activate skulls: Black Eye, Tough Luck, Catch, Cloud, Famine, Tilt, Mythic, Thunderstorm, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday, IWHBYD
Start the mission. Basically what you will want to do is get to the target locator, wait for enemies to fill the area outside the hangar, and once you are satisfied with the group of enemies, target them with the laser. You should get a CHECKPOINT REACHED message as the strike is coming down (not before!). This way, every time you revert to checkpoint, it will all be positioned for you and all you need to do is keeping hitting revert to checkpoint to keep having it automatically kill enemies in just a few seconds.
Follow the video below for how to get the target destroyer and set up your checkpoint (I do not take credit for this video).
Some notes on setting this up:
1. He plays on Legendary – I suggest Heroic since it’s easier to set up (less chance of dying)
2. If you are having trouble getting past the first elite at the top of the stairs, let him hit you! Then run around behind him and assassinate him (when he hits you he stops moving for a second - just enough time for you to kill him).
3. Do NOT throw the grenade like he does when he’s coming around the corner as it kills some of the guys you want for targeting later
4. Make sure the checkpoint does NOT show up before you target (if it does, start over). To prevent that from happening, KEEP MOVING. Checkpoints don’t show up until you stop moving, so keep moving around the screen until enough bad guys show up then head to the back of the hangar and target everyone. Just like he does in the video.
After you kill everyone, I suggest backing out and checking your carnage report. I got Jackal x 5, Grunt x 3, Skirmisher x 3, Elite x 2, plus about 1500 credits per strike in the beginning from commendations. If your carnage report doesn’t look like mine or better, I suggest trying again.
You have three choices on reverting to last save depending on your play style:
1. Hit start and revert right after the strike
2. Hit start and revert after all your commendations show up (sometimes there are residual kills that take a couple seconds)
3. Tie a rubberband around your left thumbstick so you to move forward automatically and get killed. This will revert to the last checkpoint for you. Takes longer this way but I did this and then just went and ate dinner or did other things.
Every few minutes (you will figure out what works best based on your choice above), do the following:
1. Hit SAVE AND QUIT (stats don’t update on halo waypoint until you save and quit).
2. Refresh Halo Waypoint on your computer
3. Turn in challenges that have completed
4. Create new custom challenges based on my guide above
5. Resume solo campaign on Xbox – do this while you are creating the custom challenge because stats don’t update until you hit save and quit
Total = 19,996 every 5 minutes plus a bit of time for setting up challenges and reverting saves, etc. In a couple hours I reached the 120k cap (you can hit the cap in less than an hour). Doing this method gives you credits for:
• Custom challenges
• Free for all scoring
• Commendations
• Any daily/weekly challenges that are relevant
When manually reverting to save, custom challenges were being filled so quickly that I barely had time to set up new challenges before the previous one was finished.
If you are lucky, you will get it like I did where the target locator didn’t kill one skirmisher so after the bomb strike, the skirmisher killed me and it reverted to the last save automatically. I sat working on other stuff for 2 hours and just checked back every 5 minutes to update my challenges.
You can do this on Legendary and maybe earn credits faster, but you need to adjust the kill target down since the challenges now max out at 5000 cr. I didn’t bother since it takes longer to set up your checkpoint (easier to get killed en route) but that’s up to you.
Since challenges don’t update until you hit SAVE and QUIT in the game you can create a challenge mid-game and still have it count all the kills since you started the mission. Keep this in mind so you don’t feel like you are in a rush or missing out on kills. Just make sure you have all 5 set up before hitting SAVE and QUIT.
If for some reason you have not yet earned “Lemme Upgrade Ya” then you will get that in a few minutes, most likely from “Splash Damage”. You will earn the following achievements along the way with this method:
You WON’T get banned for this. I went from nothing to Lt. Colonel in just a few days.
Note that I don’t take credit for coming up with this method on my own, but I have done tons of research to bring all the best ideas together in one detailed guide so you don’t have to.
If for some reason your challenges aren’t working, you may not have your challenges set up correctly. Send me a message and I can help.
Any questions, please post in the comment and I will do my best to clarify. Also if I missed anything, please let me know. Thanks!

The Lemme Upgrade Ya achievement in Halo: Reach worth 14 pointsAdvance any Commendation to its Silver state.
The The Start of Something achievement in Halo: Reach worth 16 pointsReach the rank of Corporal in the UNSC.
Thanks!
