How to unlock the The Start of Something achievement in Halo: Reach - Definitive Guide
This achievement can pop at different times, mine popped around half way through my corporal rank after a match on firefight. If it doesnt pop straight away dont worry as it will eventually.
You will know when it pops though as a screen will flash up and you will see the corporal rank take the place of your recruit rank.
It shouldnt take that long though to eventually pop up as by the fourth campaign mission on normal you should be close to filling up the bottom bar on the pause menu. And if you want it to pop extra quick then take part in the online or as i said before firefight as you earn more experiance for stuff like this.

This achievement requires you to earn a total of 10,000 cR. You will get credits for doing just about anything in the game and you will likely earn this by the time you beat the campaign.
If you don't want to do that you can go into matchmaking select Cooperative and then Score Attack. If you choose Gruntpocalypse and play it through fairly well you should get about 1,000 cR each time. It only takes about 12 minutes and it's super easy.
Also, you should check every day for the new challenges, they usually are pretty easy and will net you some extra cR pretty quickly on top of everything else you're earning!

I'm confused, I played through some of campaign with a friend...and when I went to check my service record it said I had over 11k cR. Yet I didn't get this achievement. Is it glitched?

That's very strange. I just checked your stats on Bungie and there seems to be no reason why you don't have it. The best I can suggest is try to keep leveling and hopefully it'll pop up on your next rank up.

= 10,000 cR
To reach the rank of Corporal, you must earn a total of 10,000 cR. You earn cR from playing multiplayer, playing campaign, killing enemies, anything that you do in the game will get you cR.
Refer to Make It Rain on how to gain cR.
Since the server shut down I've been trying to work out the most efficient way to get credits. Firefight still works solo, but . . .
What happens now (I think) is you get 5 credits per minute of survival up to a maximum of 50 credits for 10 minutes. Ouch. Grindy McGrindface. 2000 minutes to get to 10000; 1 day, 9 hours, 20 minutes.
Another guide or two have comments to the effect of setting up a firefight on Corvette, Legendary, all skulls on, bottomless clip, all invulnerability options, etc.
So do that but just one wave. Sit in the safe zone, might help here to have active camo, wait 9 minutes, kill the wave and restart. Sort of mindless thing that works while having tea in the morning.
Note there's a limit of 1000 per day, so let's say 3.5 hours a day for ten days. Quite a lot of tea over a long morning.
