How to unlock the Living Loving Bug achievement in Halo Wars: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

Getting the Scarab reinforcement drop requires you to play as a covenant leader and have all of the following be true at the time reinforcements arrive:
Have tech level 3 (Maxed out Temple)
Have 20+ unused population
Have 3000 supplies

I played as Regret on a 3v3 map with 1 friend on the enemy team. I had 3 bases filled with blessed warehouses which generated 3000 supplies in a 90 second period, and one fully upgraded Temple. I used Regrets cleanse to kill unwanted units and eventually I had enough supplies, tech, and unused units at a reinforcement drop to get a scarab.

EDIT:
As per GrmRpr69's findings, you must have under 20 population regardless of how much population you have free.

This achievement is very much based on RNG. I played for several hours across several matches before it finally popped. At one point I had over 8,000 supplies and 4 population only to get 3 vampires and a locust. But here is what I noticed, hopefully it helps:

The scarab finally popped for me when I had as close to 3,000 supplies possible and only 20 +/- population. Anytime I had more it would generate a bunch of random crap. Getting resources is easy, I don't need Bountiful Harvest, I just use the return policy of buying upgrades queued and then cancelling.

Is there an easy way to destroy units to keep your population low?

After numerous try without the leader on the field it only gave me crap waves. But once the leader was on the field, the Scarab popped up first thing! :)

I tried this and finally got it might want to add you need under 20 supply even with the +10 upgrade. I had 22/50 used and it would not give it to me several times. I knocked it to 19/50 supply and i got it on the first time.

After 1:20 hrs of playing the same match, this *explicit* achievement popped. I did everything Tyrael said and nothing happen. I tried with 0, 15, 17,18,19, and 20 unit counts. I spent 30 minutes researching different theories from the original HW - watching the spawn point, not watching the spawn, etc. It boils down to this - "RnG (random number god)".

This was after having:
7 citadels with maxed blessed houses
earning 4000-6000 depending timer
less than 20 units on screen with 50 optional

I got so bored I spawned 4 engineers and upgraded them and had them start repairing structure. A couple rounds after that, it finally popped.

Finally worked after about half hour! I spent probably the first 20 minutes gathering everything I could, and even with 2/50 of population the Scarab wouldn't show. After 30 minutes an maybe almost 20 tries finally showed up!
So for those wondering if anything is wrong it probably isn't. The game just somehow knows you want that achievement. I even ran out of batteries for using the Prophets power for so long laugh

Did it on Easy as Prophet and it took just over an hour to get a Scarab. Started with 3 bases, kept my pop at 0. Ended up with 5 fully upgraded and shielded supply bases and bought out the Temple of upgrade before it dropped. Literally the first wave I started grinding for a Scarab, I got the 15 in 1 wave achievement.

Thanks for the tips. I got this in about 30 mins on Easy 3v3 Glacial Ravine. I had 7 bases with blessed warehouses, which generated much more than the necessary 3k. I kept my unit count at 0 using the prophet's cleansing beam.

I've received a Scarab in two different games now and the achievement has not popped. Has anyone else been having any issues with the achievement unlocking?

I lucked out, this worked on the third wave that I had the necessary resources. I ended up getting 4000+ in a 90 sec round. Thanks for the guide!

Can confirm what Luigi says above, I had almost exactly 3000 resources and exactly 20 population spare when one appeared. Took a couple of tries but got there eventually.
If you play as Prophet, upgrade your ability a couple of times and then you can use that on your own troops to lower your population to your desired level.

This was a huge pain. I probably went through 7+ legit-scarab-ready reinforcement waves (with 3000+, 20+ pop available, tech level 3) before it finally gave me a scarab.

Using Regret as leader is the way to go, because the cleanse is a powerful tool to burn through money when you know you wont be able to save to 3k in time for the next wave, and/or to kill off your excess units.

I’ve got a guide for those trying to get this achievement without a friend.

Play on Chasms on Heroic Difficulty. Use all 5 of the beneficial skulls and once you have all the other bases use the skulls that make your enemy stronger.
I Picked the Prophet of Regret since he can fly around the map if needed once fully upgraded.
Pick Captain Cutter as the enemy Leader because he’s the weakest of the six.

When you start your base fill it up Warehouses, 1 Temple so you can upgrade your power level, and 1 Shield Generator just in case.
Then buy all the turrets.
Once you get your first reinforcements go take the closest base and the nearest supply depo from the Neutral Rebels enemy.

For your new bases build one shield generator and the rest warehouses and turrets.

At this point you should have the whole map locked down and everything completely upgraded. Break up your army into smaller groups and send them to die by the enemy Cutter (If they’re too big they’ll usually survive and wipe out the enemy’s forces). I kept my Prophet and an Engineer by my first base.

Now it’s just RNG. Keep your population count under 15-20 and you’ll naturally generate over 3,000 resources before the timer ends.

It took me 31 minutes to get set up and get a scarab, but it could take less or more time in your game.

Oh and you can get the “Freak on a Streak” achievement at the same time while doing this. Good luck!

Play on Easy as the Prophet of Regret and choose Cutter as your enemy. Build up you warehouses and take over any other bases you can building warehouses on them. Also build a Temple and upgrade your tech level to three. Having turrets on all bases will help if the enemy launches an attack. Also upgrade the Prophet’s beam power tech. In order to receive a Scarab, you will need at least 4000 supplies and a population under 20 (not just 20 spare)

The trick here is to use the Prophet’s cleansing beam to kill your own units to free up space. Keep in mind, however, that the enemy will still attack from time to time so don’t leave yourself completely defenseless. This can take a while as even if you have the required resources and population, you are not guaranteed a Scarab as the game will often supply you with Wraiths or Hunters (hence why the Prophet’s cleansing beam is handy).

They will give you a scarab if there are at least 20 troop points and 3000 currency available, but the probability is not 100%, so don’t despair and continue playing, sending your troops to war. It is better to use at least the heroic difficulty level, otherwise the enemy will not have time to destroy your troops and it will be difficult to free 20 troop points.
