How to unlock the One and Done achievement in Halo Wars: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide
Choose Forge vs Cutter: The reason to play with Forge is to build heavy supply pads straight away to be as aggressive as possible. Choose Cutter as your opponent since he is the weakest leader.
Play on Chasm: This map is not perfect, but somehow Cutter tends to go with ground units fairly often (out of 10 tries he went with scorpions once). This is much easier to deal with early game. If he is not pushing ground forces, restart. When he only used ground forces it was easy to maintain an army at max population.
A drawback of the map is the voids/chasms, sometimes you cannot reach the first flag drop. After the first capture this will work in our advantage since we will have air units and Cutter most likely won't.
Strategy: Boom your economy with Forge's heavy supply pad. Create an air-force to max population. Dominate the middle area to quickly grab the flag and retreat to your base. Our focus is on early domination, if Cutter stalls the game into to the late game phase you should restart. More on this later.
The red square will be your base and the green square Cutter’s base:
Initial setup:
1. Put on skulls to help you out: Catch, Sugar Cookies, Pain Train, Bountiful Harvest, and Emperor Skulls.
2. Build 3x Heavy Supply Pad.
3. Gather resources next to your base with your warthog (often on the right side)
4. Gather resources in the middle of the map.
5. Get ready for the flag spawn at the ‘X’. The reason is simple, if the flag spawns towards your enemies base, you have to act quickly to grab it. If it spawns towards your base you will have a wider time window to grab it.
First flag capture:
6. Keep an eye on the time! At 1:05-1:15 the first flag will spawn. Grab it! Common reasons to miss it are: 1) The flag is hovering over the void and you cannot reach it. 2) the opponent was quicker and grabbed it.
In the first case wait for the flag to fly to land, in the second case restart the game. You only lost a minute and grabbing the first flag makes your life so much easier. It is worth the small time investment to get the first flag.
7. Go to the Blue dot with the flag and gather the resources at this point. This is a rather safe place, sometimes a ground unit will show up. Note that pressing down at the D-pad brings you to the warthog. If you are attacked use the D-pad to run away immediately. Since Cutter mainly has ground units you can out run him to safeguard your first capture. Don't hide at your base if you don't have turrets, it will only attract unwanted attention.
In the meantime:
8. Build Heavy Supply Pad.
9. Build a front turret to prepare for a common early rush by Cutter with a small force.
10. Build Reactor.
11. Upgrade to fortress.
12. Build another front turret.
13. Build another Reactor.
14. Build an Air Pad.
15. Set the gather point at the ‘X’ by pressing left stick twice.
16. Now queue hornets.
By now you should have captured the first flag. So far so good, but now the game is about to start and it can go in different directions. The outcome really depends on 1) Flag behavior: Sometimes the flag keeps spawning/flying right into enemy hands. 2) Cutter: Often he attacks only with ground forces, but sometimes he decides to go with scorpions which makes it hard to control the middle area or any area.
Try to accept the luck factor and if the game is against you think about restarting the game. It may take a couple of tries to get everything on your side.
Second Flag Spawn:
17. All we can do is focus on getting a decent army at the 'X'. The player that controls the middle section controls the game. Spam hornets as fast as possible. Since it is early game quantity is over quality. Try to get to max population. Try to spread out your army a bit so you can reach a large area quickly if the flag spawns.
18. At 3:40-4:15 the next flag will spawn. Most likely you will be in a weird position. Your economy is boomed, however your forces are low, especially if the flag spawns early. 1) If you can grab the flag, awesome! Retreat to your base. 2) Cutter grabs the flag, but with your spawning hornets you can destroy it. 3) You decide to give the enemy a free capture and use this time to gain control of the middle area.
19. In the meantime build your back turrets and upgrade all turrets to counter the units Cutter is producing.
Next Flag Spawns:
20. Depending on the outcome of the previous flag spawn the timing of the next flag spawn is hard to predict. However, whatever the outcome was you should have control of the middle area by now! If for whatever reason you don't, it will be a very hard game to win.
During the rest of the game:
-- Try to keep your hornet army at max population.
-- If possible save 1200 resources and upgrade a reactor. Then upgrade your hornets at the Air Pad. Only save resources and upgrade when you army is large.
21. Grab the next flag and retreat to the line of fire of your base. Be sure the flag carrying hornet is placed at the back! You really should be able to grab this flag with your hornet army controlling the middle. Especially if the flag is hovering over the void, since your opponent most likely has not yet any flying units.
If Cutter grabbed it destroy the flag carrier asap! Our boomed hornet army is powerful early game but loses track late game, we don't want Cutter stalling the game by lucky flag grabs.
22. Cutter will attack you, he will probably send a bunch infantry units and some Spartans. Target the Spartans and lure them towards your turrets. Use the speed of your hornets and the healing ability to keep the flag safe.
23. After the capture (or failed attempt) push out to regain control of the middle area once more.
24. Rinse and repeat step 20-23 for as many flag spawns you need. Try to avoid lucky flag grabs for Cutter since stalling the game will bring you in the next phase where you will need expensive upgrades and a second base.
This should do the trick. The key element is to grab the first flag. This is essential to finish the game quickly before Cutter can research upgrades and send a powerful scorpion army!
If you do stall the game into late game, restart. If you want to give it a shot then capture the base to the right of your starting base to build a second air pad, armory and train Spartans and fill the rest with supply pads.
Select the map Chasms, play as the Arbiter and select Cutter as your enemy. Build a temple, two warehouses, and a summit. Once the temple is complete, move the Arbiter to the middle of the map. Once your summit is complete, queue a few Banshees. At this point you will want to build two turrets and maybe another warehouse depending on your supplies.
If the flag appears before you have your Banshees, move the Arbiter to collect it, otherwise select one of your Banshees to grab it. This is done because sometimes the sentinel ‘flag’ will move over a chasm and you won’t be able to grab it with a ground unit. Once you Banshee has the flag, move all your Banshees behind your base. By this stage you should have produced a few more Banshees, (ideally you want about six or seven). Once the countdown has completed, move your Banshees back to the center of the map and wait until the next spawn.
There is a little luck involved in this as sometimes Cutter will send out a large group to attack you and other times he will spend most of his time building up his base. Either way, using the Banshees to move around the map quickly is the key to winning this. By the time the third flag spawns, you should have a sizable fleet of Banshees and be able to defend yourself.
