it works, kind of clunky how to set up a 2 player local race but it you manage it is the easiest way

From the race menu choose play against CPU, select Maze, Novice. I chose Veggie Troubles for this because it seems to be the shortest maze. If you don't get this maze just back out and press Novice again until you get it/ whichever you want to race.
To be safe, i'd recommend training your hamster to ay least level 10 each skill but this maze focuses on Strength and Determination. You can train Strength with the "Strength Trainer" which is the apparatus on the far left of the gym with the dumbbell symbol on the floor.
The Determination Trainer apparatus is on the far right, next to the bedroom, the one with the 3 arrows symbol on the floor. Perfect score for each is 3 stars which makes you move faster.
As for the race there are 2 timed mini games and 3 button mash mine games. Pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
With it being on Novice, your opponent will rarely get 3 stars so it should be straightforward to win.
Just repeat 10 times in a row and you're good, if you fail at any point you will have to start again.
