How to unlock the Release the Mages! achievement in Hand of Fate - Definitive Guide
To get this achievement, you have to complete the "White Council" quest line. When you activate "White Council V," you'll be prompted to kill the three magi and when successful, you'll unlock the achievement. Below I'll detail the whole quest progression for your reference with spoiler tags and links to the Hand of Fate Wiki.

The Mages encounter is activated from the Encounter Card Mage's Tower, of which is earned by defeating the fourth boss The Jack of Plague (first rat-man). Using the "Recommended Deck" put this in mine automatically, but it's best to double-check to make sure it's in your suit of Encounter cards. At that point it's up to luck as to when you activate it.
Defeat the 3 Mages and enjoy your 10 points. They block your melee attacks stalwartly, have a deflectable magic missile attack, and have a charge-up spell that casts three lines of magic on the ground, which deal damage when walked on.

As you advance in the story mode, you will eventually unlock the Mages encounter, so kill all of them to pop the trophy. Mages appear early in the game and at that point they can be tricky. You can counter their range attack, which will kill them (see Ninja for details on that) but they cast lines on the floor and will do a lot of damage though you can roll over then () to avoid damage. When you hit them will melee, they will sometimes block all your hits so shield bash them () to break their defence.
