How to unlock the Burning Spirit achievement in Hard Corps: Uprising - Definitive Guide
The most important thing you’ll want to do is familiarize yourself with the levels. You’ll want to have some idea of where enemies are going to appear and how best to deal with them, in addition to learning the bosses’ major attacks. It’s a pretty short game, so there’s really not that much to remember (plus, you can just keep trying the same stage over and over).
The second most important thing when going after these S-Ranks is to forget about getting lots of points. Instead, you’ll want to blaze through the stages as quickly as humanly possible. The reason is simple – an extra 500,000 points over the course of a stage is nothing compared to the 4+ million you can get from the time bonus at the end of a level. For the most part, your biggest concern is killing bosses quickly; I’ll give a few tips for doing that later.
The one exception to the speed demon approach is stage 2. In that level, all the destructible foliage adds to your combo multiplier, making it pretty easy to get over 10 million points, even without the end-of-stage bonuses. In that level, I’d suggest focusing on destroying everything while trying to maintain your combo throughout the level. This strategy doesn’t work very well on the other stages because it’s generally very hard (if not impossible) to keep a combo going long enough for it to reach the multiplier of 30 or 40 that you can get in stage 2.
Basically, practice the levels a bunch and, if there are any levels that keep giving you an A-Rank or lower, the solution is almost always to do it faster.
For the most part, the best way to charge through a stage is to dash while continuously firing a fully-upgraded Spread Shot or Chain Laser. Fortunately, each of the pre-packaged characters has an upgrade that lets them begin a stage with one of those weapons. Combine with Automatic Fire and the “Unit Lv3” upgrade for the appropriate weapon and you’re in business.
Bosses are generally a bit more difficult to take down. I would typically try to keep a fully-upgraded Heated Plasma (that thing is nasty when combined with Automatic Fire), Chain Laser, or Machine Gun in reserve for use against bosses. Spread Shot isn’t nearly as effective, and I would only use the other two weapons if I was desperate.
The bosses are generally what’ll slow you down, so you have to be ready for that. One way to mitigate the cost of losing a special weapon is to grab the Rapid Fire upgrade, making the basic gun quite a bit more potent. Combine that with some health (Protector) and lives (Uprising) upgrades, and even the bosses shouldn’t be too bad.
Naturally, you should also try to get any skills that’ll increase mobility. Things like Speed Boost, Speed Run, Speed King, Air Boost +1, and Air Jump +1 can help you get through stages more quickly.
Aside from that, I don’t really have any specific tips, like boss strategies or anything. Everything basically comes down to learning the patterns and getting comfortable with the game.
Alternatively, you can try to find some infinitely spawning enemies. If you can rack up several million points by slaying the same dudes over and over, you'll be able to get an S-Rank at the end. I know that this works in stages 2 and 6, where there are several places with respawning enemies, but I can't say for any of the other stages, as I didn't find such easily-exploitable areas anywhere else.
Also, as a side note, I originally completed this achievement with Krystal spamming Spread Shot most of the time, so most of this guide was written based on those experiences. I've also S-Ranked all the stages with Bahamut, and the same strategy works well with Chain Laser. The one notable difference is that I generally have to be a bit more careful with Bahamut - Chain Laser doesn't lock onto projectiles like missiles, making the field a bit more dangerous than when using the Spread Shot, which destroys most things that could hurt you. On the other hand, Chain Laser is devastating against bosses, so it's nice to be able to have instant access to one of the more uncommon weapons.
Quick Summary
-Familiarize yourself with the levels (beat all of them at least once) before attempting S-Ranks
-Focus on completing stages quickly by dashing and spamming a Spread Shot or Chain Laser
-Use more powerful weapons, like Heated Plasma or Chain Laser, against bosses to bring them down quickly
-Get the upgrade that lets you start with one of the more potent wide-area weapons (Spread Shot or Chain Laser)
-Get upgrades that increase your movement abilities (speed, triple jump, etc.)
-Get upgrades that increase the power of your preferred weapons, Automatic Fire, and Rapid Fire
-Get upgrades that increase your health or number of lives for some insurance against bosses
Some of the stages can be tough, but using this general outline, I was able to get an S-Rank on every stage relatively easily.
I had S weapon fully upgraded and stood close to were boulder is falling and aimed diagonal up so I hit the falling boulder to increase the combo quicker while it also hit the respawning enemy. It was enough to reach 7 million when the negative points thing hit.
Then I got 1 million extra when I finished the level and got over 8 million for the S rank. I believe 4 million is the cutoff.
It was 4 million for level 1. Someone mentioned 5 but that is wrong since I got S at 4 million for level 1. Maybe it is different for different levels.
And level 7 I actually only got just past 5 million when I did the S rank with Bahamut. Not sure why the negative points hit me so early the second time I did it. Maybe I lost all the lives and got a checkpoint closer to were I did the trick. Started over at 0 points but had much more time as the checkpoint was close?
So you can trick level 2,3,5 and 7 and maybe some of the others as well.
You need 4,000,000 CP points to achieve the S-Rank on each stage. The points are determined by killing enemies, speed and not dying. If you die your points will reset and you’ll have a tougher time reaching the 4 million mark. You get a 3,000,000 bonus for finishing the stage in a certain amount of time (see below.) You also get a 250,000 bonus for finding the medal in the stage.
Time Bonuses for each Stage are as follows:
-
Stage 1 Desert: 6 minutes
-
Stage 2 Jungle: 7 minutes
-
Stage 3 Ruins: 6 minutes
-
Stage 4 Capital Highway: 10 minutes
-
Stage 5 Capital Laboratory: 10 minutes
-
Stage 6 Capital Railway: 7 minutes
-
Stage 7 Capital Tower Building: 12 minutes
-
Stage 8 Battle Ship: 12 minutes

As you can see from the achievement's icon, S rank is the highest rating you can achieve for any level in the game! There are specific point requirements for each rank, which you can find in the companion thread, but specifically for S rank, you need to get 4 million points in a level.
The factors that contribute to the amount of points you achieve by a level's end are your base points accumulated during the level, a clear bonus just for beating the level (which increases, per level, for every level you beat in a single run,) a time bonus based on how fast you completed the level and a special bonus that is granted to you for achieving certain goals such as finding the level's Star Chip or beating the level without taking any damage.
Some notes about points and maintaining your combos:
- Your points are not affected by taking damage or dying, however either will cause your combo to end.
- Your position on the leaderboard is updated in real-time. If you ever beat your current high score, every point you earn from then on will update it! Much like achievements, continuing doesn't affect this at all, but doing so does reset your session's score to 0 (thanks to CrazyStairs!) I would still suggest Exiting to the title screen before turning off your console in all situations though.
- The bugs in stage 2 and 3 that prevent you from jumping until you shake them off do no damage, so they don't end your combo, take away your currently equipped weapon, and strangely enough, being poisoned in stage 2 doesn't either (but the damage done by poison does count against the 5 million point bonus, thanks cra and Todaysforgotten!)
- Bugs *can* damage you when falling however, either from tree branches in stage 2 or from breakable ceilings and the two falling sections (including the raft ride) in stage 3.
- Despite all that, bugs will never kill you. They can fall on your head until your life bar is empty, but you won't die; the same goes for poison.
- Piranhas will also damage you flat-out instead of nibbling on you if they don't hit you face-first, but both attacks will end your combo and take away your weapon.
- Exploding trains in level 6 do not hurt you, but the train that falls off of the upper tracks onto the middle car of the remaining train will hurt if it hits you.
- In level 7 and 8, the rockets that you have to ride will not hurt you with their explosions.
This achievement must be done in Rising Mode. Why? Because it's the only mode where you can actually check your rating! (Arcade Mode has no level select feature!) On the stage select screen, check out the bottom-right corner of the picture of the stage to see what your best rank on the level is.
Also check out the companion thread for the number of points each bonus (clear, time, special) awards you per level, and the requirements for each.
Note that even if you want to look badass and unlock this achievement simultaneously with "All Clear," this one unlocks after it regardless, so you may as well take your time and be patient with the final level (I tested this one myself!)
The easiest way is to get a time bonus of 3 million (and about a million bonus for killing enemies). The best option to be on time is to run through the entire level with a laser in your hands. If your characters are leveled up to 100% or so, then choose Bahamut, run and shoot, the laser will find all targets for you
