How to unlock the Cannon Happy achievement in Heavy Weapon - Definitive Guide

Update 10-4-2017 It seems that the Sandworm boss can kill you when he blows up after you have killed him, this seems to screw with the achievement somehow as multiple users have reported it.

Okay! This achievement can be very tough if you don't go about it in the right way. First off, let me confirm what others above me have assumed.

CAUTION*** Do NOT exit game if you lose a life or if you use a nuke. This will negate the achievement, instead, simply lose all your lives intentionally before the level ends and then use the "RETRY" option. When using the retry option the game voids anything that was done on this level and starts you at the start of your current level.

Now that that is out of the way lets go about with what you CAN do. The key factor to this achievement is what upgrades you get 1st. Unlike what others have said the game does not get more difficult based on what kind of upgrades you use your points on. I am usually someone who goes for defensive stuff but this game is all about attacking, so here is a list of what upgrades you should get upon completion of each level.

Level 1 completed- Guided Missile
Level 2 completed- Laser
Level 3 completed- Unguided Missile
Level 4 completed- Unguided Missile #2
Level 5 completed- Guided Missile #2
Level 6 completed- Unguided Missile #3
Level 7 completed- Guided Missile #3
Level 8 completed- Laser #2
Level 9 completed- Laser #3

At this point you've purchased all the important stuff, the Flak Cannon and the lightning are near useless until they get to Level 3 upgrade. The Shield can save your life, but only has about a 50% chance to do so once its upgraded to Level 3 and it doesn't stop Laser based attacks EVER, so knock that down to a 35% chance to at Level 3. I chose Shield because even a chance is worth it just in case some goon gets a lucky hit in on you.

Level 10 completed- Shield
Level 11 completed- Shield #2

Despite what the achievement says, you have to complete 12 missions and meet the requirements, instead of 11. This during your entire time that is the maximum amount of upgrades you can have and that is the path I took and the one I found that works best.

Tips: It didn't get tough for me until Mission 8 and 9. but its easier again at Mission 10 and 11.If you see a "Fat Bomber", the dudes with the Nukes, then ignore everything and focus on those Nukes, with your firepower following my path, this should be no problem. Remember to stay at the far right of the screen or far left, it seemed much better for me rather than staying in the center of the screen. Be aware of your "one-hit-kill-enemies": Nuke Bombers, Satalites, and Bulldozers. Every other enemy kills you in 2 hits with out shields, it takes more hits to kill you if you have shields. Since you can't use Nukes and you can't die, then "Mega-Laser" has become your best friend. It seems the chance of you getting more Mega-laser parts is based on how many enemies you kill, I have gotten as many as 3 Mega-Lasers in 1 level before. When you get the Mega-laser, don't go all crazy with it, swipe the screen once then wait, flick it at the incoming enemies rather than HOLDING it. By using it this way you will conserve energy, it still will deplete but it will last slightly longer.

I think that's pretty complete, if I missed anything or you think I made a mistake then PLEASE comment as explain the situation rather than just giving me negative feedback. I will quickly fix the problem and all will be well, thanks!!

i used different upgrades to yours, but the advice on not exiting the game and instead losing your lives and continuing worked, achievement popped after doing the 12th mission. Thanks =]

Hey just wanted to let you know that for me personally the achievement clicked right after the eleventh mission. Im not sure if it has anything to do with this but i went for this achievement first before any other. Maybe theres something to it? Just felt obligated to let you know. Thanks for the guide!

I got it at the end of the 11th mission as well and that was after saving and quitting out to go to the dashboard a few times for breaks. 12th mission glitch must be patched!

Just nabbed this achievement, the last one I had left for this game. It popped right after beating the battleship boss of the 11th mission. Thanks for the tips on what to upgrade.

Used your strategy and got it in no time. Just to let you know, I didn't have to do mission 12. It popped for me once I finished mission 11. Great guide

Thank you for the guide! I gave it a thumbs up even though I don't agree with a few details. For instance, after the first few levels I just got sick & tired of dying on purpose to restart and resorted to exiting game if I died and it still popped. Though like so many others have experienced I had to do mission 12 also.

Just want to add be careful after the boss fight on level 8! For some reason where the sandworm blows up can also kill you. Ive died several times after getting the points for killing him.

I can confirm that it unlocked for me after 11 missions as well. And I went through the game without quitting, picked "try again" (retry) if I got hit or something. Took about 1 or 2 hours to finish this in one session. :3

I did start this game today for the mission and must say the guide is good but i would say that for example on a mission with tanks i had laser 3 upgraded with level 3 non guide missiles because with laser its fast and easy to destroy tanks and also as well nuke bombers. Thats the difference i made on level 6 and one other.

lol i just realised that the black orbs are not bombs that i have to avoid and its a super weapon. haha so at level 13 i figured that one out. (That could have been a reason i struggled with level 4 a bit and most on level 6). After level 6 i made a quick work on all the levels for this achiement. I got it after level 11.

Great solution. I used this solution and weapons set up all the way to level 12 and then I used cancermatt2's weapons set up from his comments above for level 12 and finished level 12 after only 2 attempts then the achievement popped. I can verify that I DID NOT have to do this in one session. I worked on this achievement over a week doing one or two levels at a time.

This does not have to be in one sitting, I turned off my xbox and still got it after the 11th mission. When my tank died I just let the other 2 tanks die and clicked retry

A very selective few people have done 12 missions and received no achievement. I would suggest trying to complete the 13th and if that doesn't work then starting over. It does seem to be glitchy rarely unlocking slightly early for some people and slightly late for a few others. Hope that helps.

I got this years ago but it will unlock after the 11th mission (starting from mission 1 and not quitting out) if you don't use any nukes and don't die a single time.

This unlocked after mission 11!
I DID quit out multiple times and even turned off my XBox. Got this achievement over the course of a week or two. When I died once, I killed myself twice more. When I wanted to quit out of the game after a loss, I made sure that I said retry first and then in the weapons selection screen chose to quit to main menu. (wasn't sure what the game saves when leaving the game.)

Solution worked perfectly,I got this achievement after completing stage eleven. I always exhausted my lives and chose to continue. I did stop and finish a few days too. Thanks for the solution, heres a video that helped me as well for the boss fights. Its not mine but used as reference only. Please give its owner thumbs up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLRPnIV9qPQ&t=182s

yep I just got the achievement after mission 11 and avoiding the sand worm death. Since exiting the game appartently voids the achievement i wonder if closing the game voids it too. I mean its worth a shot because you're gonna have to restart anyways.

Setup that worked for me to unlock after beating Mission #12 was #3 defense orb, #3 guided missles, #3 rockets, #2 laser. Freaking annoyingly difficult. Stupid rocket trucks and satellites that 1-shot KO's. Good riddance

If you get hit by the worm in 8 after killing it. I found pausing the game then quitting the game from Xbox menu to help. After redoing it and staying alive and finishing 12 it popped. However this is from Xbox one backwards compatibility so I hope this helps.

This also unlocked for me as soon as Mission 11 finished for me, i’m playing it BC through the XSX so maybe that has something to do with it.

Mission 10 and 11 are just harder versions of mission 1 and 2, like Op said they’re much easier than 8 and 9, just watch out for a nuke plane barrage that occurs near the end of mission 11.

Just in case it happens to anyone else ...I paused the game at 10 came back and forgot what I was sort of doing and clicked the trigger firing a nuke! I purposefully lost all my lives and clicked retry, fortunately it still popped for me at 11 (not 12). So if you nuke by accident, just lose your lives and retry!

Just wanted to let everyone know, it’s not 11 in a row, and it’s not the first 11 missions. It’s any 11. For some reason i sucked at mission 4 so I basically just did a no death run of the entire game minus mission 18. It really sucked, but if I could do it, you can aswell!

Same as @FerociousTiger1. Multiple sessions, unlocked after mission 12. I thought I had somehow screwed myself out of it by getting the 12 target nuke achievement in a multiplayer game, but that wasn't the case. It just unlocked one mission late. I don't recall dying or using a nuke on any mission, though.

Thanks for a nice guide! A few questions though:
1. Can this achievement be done in co-op?
2. Is it possible to quit once you have successfully beaten a level and and resume from where you left off?
3. Do you have to complete the levels in order?

Thanks in advance! Me and my brother tried this just now. Unfortunately he died simultaneously to when we killed one of the last bossen. Since stats still said no reinforcements were used for me we decided to play on. No achievement.

Hey I was searching through the forums and just had a quick question on cannon happy. Has anyone tried to play this local co-op or over xbox live multiplayer and just made sure your profile was not the one who died but the other player could use nukes and die and your profile would still get the achievement? Makes sense that your main profile would still get it but just curious is all. This game is damn tough and I can make it all the way to the ends of boards but then I die right before the boss fights.

Thanks!

Unfortantely I think you may be right. I was unlucky enough to get killed by the sand worm AFTER i already killed it, no way for me to restart the level. Just finished mission 13 and still no achievement. Went through all this frustration for nothing angry

In case anyone is wondering, I got this only playing on back compat, over multiple sessions, even across 2 different xboxes. Seems like as long as you exit to dash or from the powerup screen and not from the retry screen you should be ok.

Stages 6 and 9 were a bear though and I almost gave up. cry Also thanks for the tip about the stage 8 boss, I made sure to get as far from him as possible when I got the kill.

I would like to confirm Mega's solution. I've had this game forever and after a few playthroughs gave up entirely. I realize now that it was all in my weapon setup.

There's A LOT of misinformation about this cheevo. Mega's was the most accurate I could find. I will list how I won it:

I'm a defensive person and kept most of my weapons at 2, but some levels are harder than others and it doesn't matter if you're leveled up from 1-3, it's in the programming. I had a hard time on level 9. Played it a TON. Changed my weapons a bit, and with guided x3 and missiles and no orbs, I passed it. Luckily 10 & 11 were easier. Level 12 was the hardest, I tried with Mega's setup but couldn't get it. Then I dropped all weapons x2 except lightning x1 and with some luck won the game. YOU DO HAVE TO PASS 12 LEVELS FOR IT TO POP, despite what the misleading cheevo states. I actually thought I died but somehow stayed alive with orb x3. Took me almost a year to return to this annoying game, but it finally popped. Thank you, Mega. Positive vote.

This achievement description isn't exactly accurate in what it needs you to do, I can only tell you what I had to do to make this unlock.

I got mine after completing wave 12 without dying. It is important that if you lose a life to immediately kill yourself and select the retry option. Do not quit out and come back in - believe me, I've tried that and no achievement, so it looks like it has to be completed in one session.

Also don't upgrade your weapons above level 2 - the strength of the enemy seems to increase somewhat if you go up to level 3, making levels 10/11/12 really hard to do, I found it significantly easier only leveling up to 2. You also need to learn to take out the nuke planes by shooting the bomb with your bullets and the plane with the laser, as on the later levels 2 will come at you at once if you aren't quick enough and then there is a good chance you will screw yourself.

I left and came back mutluple times over 3 days and did not notice any difficulty increase after i got all my weapons to L3.

Perhaps you mistook the randomized waves as a difficulty increase i am not certain

Not a solution but it will help you and answer to Erndawwg dashboard question.

I just got this cheevo over a few days. Just quit to menu and ended game when I got bored. It still popped at the end of 11 for me ;)

Hope this helps people not tearing their hair out in one sitting.

Mission 12 is required for this achievement and it is REALLY HARD.

The best setup I've found to do mission 12 is this:

3 Shield ///// 2 Rockets
2 Homing Missile ///// 0 Flak Cannon
2 Laser ///// 2 Thunderstrike

You can use the powerups from the ally plane? Or need to avoid them, also, what means reinforcements exactly?

One thing I want to add because the guide isn't overly clear -- you *can* quit out after you lose all three lives. ie. When it asks you to 'try again' or 'quit', quit is *FINE*. Got the achievement after 12 flawless levels like many others.

This achievement is difficult, but not as much so as it may seem. You must complete any 11 levels of the single-player campaign (in a single playthrough) without dying or using a nuke. You are however allowed continues. If you die during a mission, allow yourself to be killed 2 more times quickly and start the mission over. It is advised that you do this on the first 11 missions, as each mission is harder than the last.

this might sound like a conspiracy theory, but after grinding mission 12 for about 5 hours, the game decided to give me 2 of the same waves in a row for a couple games, maybe the RNG-esus had too much pity for me, or maybe it's coded intentionally.

anyways, this setup / video was helpful enough to go finish it on the first try with the loadout.

for those who just want text:

3 shield, 1 guided rocket, 3 laser, 2 unguided rockets, 1 thunderstrike.

hope this helps you out.

Just be sure that you never use a nuke and if you die, you quit to the main menu and retry. You'll start at that same level and continue on. Completing missions 1-9 is the easiest choice for this trophy. You have to actually complete mission 9 to get the trophy. Some have stated they have to complete mission 10 as well to get the trophy. Keep your eyes on the atomic bombs that the large tan planes drop as if they hit the ground, you die. Those are the biggest hazard while trying to do this.

In 11 levels you cannot use nuclear bombs and you cannot die. However, there are continuations of the mission, which means if you die in the middle of the mission, immediately allow yourself to be killed 2 more times and continue the same mission further.

For some reason, I was able to get the achievement only after completing the 12th mission. At the same time, “nuks” were not used, as were rebirths. There may be a bug - so don’t be surprised if you find yourself in the same situation when achievement notifications do not appear after the 11th mission.

When obtaining this achievement, you should be most wary of atomic bombers - if you miss at least one shell dropped by them and do not destroy it before it hits the ground, you will have to start the mission again.

Can be combined with obtaining the " World Tour " and " Stockpile " achievements.
