How to unlock the Marathon Master achievement in Hexic 2 - Definitive Guide

If you try to tackle this the old fashioned way like using a grid in the original Hexic, then this could take forever. The creator added a piece in between the starflower and pearl called a ruby. When you surround a piece with 6 flowers it creates the ruby instead of a pearl. So to make a flower of pearls you would need the equivalent of 6 Poo-Bahs from the first game, totaling 36 black pearls (which are now rubies).

There is a much easier way to do this that requires only 11 starflowers. This method is definitely much easier and faster as I completed this in about 20 minutes and I was only on level 4 when I finished.

What you ultimately need to do is arrange 11 stars in a diagonal line so that the game sees you make 7 rubies in a line which turns into 3 black pearls. The game recognizes overlapping lines as separate 5 ruby lines if they are all made at once. To do this, arrange 2 sets of 4 flowers in a diagonal line so that they are 3 spaces apart, with a set of 3 flowers vertical in the middle of that space. Then simply rotate the 3 flowers into the line making your 3 pearls. After you have your three pearls just combo them and you will have your achievement.

Here is a rough drawing of how the setup should look.

UPDATE:
Thank you to MakeMeACoffee for providing an updating clip showing the solution in action.

Also heed the warning not to combo any other pieces that will break up your line.

Wow. I was expecting this to be harder than it seemed but that was so easy. I did it in like 20 minutes on my second try.

I'm not sure this method works anymore. I just successfully lined up 11 flowers, and while it gave me enough rubies, they were not lined up at all.

Glad it worked for you Cube.

Cornerscout this solution should still be viable. I would double check to make sure you have everything lined up just like the first image and try again

It worked for me, but it required a lot of patience. I kept making combos beneath my stars. these tips may help anyone who is having trouble with this achievement:

1- If you are playing on the lowest difficulty setting, there are only 4 different colors until the third level. This means that if you make any combo, there's an extremely high chance that it will be followed by many others automatically. This can be incredibly frustratring, so always restart if you go through the first level and you star count in below 2. This is going to save you a lot of time.
I had 7 stars at the end of the second level, so keep this in mind if you want some basic guidelines.

2- Do not try to make a grid. Due to the way the board is structured in Hexic 2, there are some spots which are not under your integral control. That means that disaster is bound to happen if you are not paying attention. Besides, a grid will most likely take some time to build if you're a beginner, so try to do this normally.

3- You should be able to do this with exactly 11 stars, so don't go ahead trying to fill up the board with unnecessary flowers. This will only generate frustration when you inevitably cluster them together

4- Once you have the required number of stars, line 'em up vertically from left to right in groups of 4, 3 and 4, respectively. Also start to build the diagonal from the same orientation (left -> right). The reverse is much harder, so keep this in mind.

5- After making the pearls, just activate [activate, not turn] one of them (I believe the middle one, I'm not sure now) and the achievement is yours.

There is something weird about this. I've got a clip you can see here
playing
where (I believe) I do the setup correctly, but for whatever reason it doesn't work.

Luckily it doesn't take very long to attempt, so I'll see if it works next time - but if anybody has any pointers on why it didn't work that would obviously help.

Actually re-watching it, the reds beneath the central line of 3 is probably what screwed me as they combo at the same time and probably cause portions to fall before the game registers the line of rubys to make the pearls

Yes it worked the next time (also made a clip of that). Might be worth updating the solution with a warning to avoid making 'other' combos at the same time.

Would you mind sharing the clip of the successful attempt? I know the YouTube video isn't of the highest quality so having a newer version may be useful. I will update the solution

Unsuccesful : playing
Succesful: MakeMeACoffee playing Hexic 2

As I said before, the reds being combo'd simultaneously when i rotate the central piece causes the newly-formed rubies to drop before they can register as being "in a line".

So just make sure that when you rotate the central piece, the only line/cluster/star you are creating is the line of star pieces.

Sorry man, it's not my video and at the time was the only one I could find. I've edited the solution to include a link to a screenshot and drawing of how it should be setup. Hope that helps.

I'd prefer a better video... where you specify pausing at the beginning -- it's already gone! A little MORE to see would be nice. Ugh, I'm gonna need to do this the long way.

No doubt the solution of "Fightn Ares" is magnificent; Thanks to him I completed the game.
I come to share with you through a video how I managed to unlock this achievement; We all learn differently.
The video may be long but it will help if you have difficulties in how to accommodate the pieces.

I hope it helps! Good luck!

If you think I deserve a thumb down, tell me the reason it will definitely help me to improve this and future solutions. Thank youwink

This achievement requires you to beat Marathon Mode by making a cluster, line, or flower of Black Pearls.

The easiest way to do this is to make a cluster, as it only takes 3 Black Pearls, whereas a line is 5 Black Pearls and a flower is 6 Black Pearls. Since Black Pearls are more difficult to make, that is why I say go for the cluster. This achievement will require lots of skill and patience. Some methods or tips are:

1. Make a link of 8 stars in a line, preferably vertical, of 4 stars, leave a colored hex in between, and then have 3 more stars on top. Then, rotate a star into the middle. What this will do is create 4 rubies, because the game will see 4 simultaneous lines of 5: 1-5, 2-6, 3-7, 4-8. Then make a link of 7 stars somewhere else to avoid clusters to get 3 more rubies. Line them up so that there are either 3 on each side or 4 and 2, with a colored hex in the middle. Then, rotate your 7th ruby into that spot. The game will see 3 lines, and give you 3 black pearls. Use emeralds, and other starflowers, or just keep rotating until you make these 3 into a cluster.

2. Create as many Starflowers as you can in the beginning levels to avoid having new colored tiles and bombs get in the way of creating them. From there, begin chaining together your Starflowers to make Rubies. Once you have made enough Rubies to create 3 black Pearls, do so. I suggest making one at a time, that way you don't accidentally make clusters. Also, do not use all your Starflowers at once. Always make sure that you have at least 2 Starflowers to be able to continue making more, as you progress it will get more and more difficult to make Starflowers.

The easiest way to do this is to make a cluster, as it only takes 3 Black Pearls, where as a line is 5 and flower is 6. Since Black Pearls are more difficult to make, that is why I say go for the cluster. Some of the methods below are untested, but are worth a try nonetheless. This achievement will take some time and patience, and unless you were able to create a Grand Pearl Poohbah in the original Hexic, don’t expect this to be a cakewalk.

1. (Courtesy of El Capitaine) Create a link of 8 stars (make a line, preferably vertical, of 4 stars, leave a colored hex in between, and then have 3 more stars on top. Then, rotate a star into the middle.) What this will do is create 4 rubies, because the game will see 4 simultaneous lines of 5. (1-5, 2-6, 3-7, 4-8). Then make a link of 7 stars (somewhere else, to avoid accidental clusters) to get 3 more rubies. Line them up either so that there is either 3 on each side or 4 and 2, with a colored hex in the middle. Then, rotate your 7th ruby into that spot. The game will see 3 lines, and give you 3 black pearls. Use emeralds, other stars, or just keep rotating until you make these 3 into a cluster.

2. Create as many Starflowers as you can in the beginning levels to avoid having new colored tiles and bombs get in the way of creating them. From there, begin chaining together your Stars to make Rubies. Once you have made enough Rubies to create 3 black Pearls, do so. I suggest making one at a time, that way you don't accidently make clusters. Also, do not use all your stars at once. Always make sure that you have at least 2 Stars to be able to continue making more, as you progress it will get more and more difficult to make Stars.
