To get a silent assassin rating you CANNOT:
-leave witnesses
- Kill anyone else but your targets ( exception for the wife who is carrying the microfilm in the mission "A new Life")
-Leave your suit behind
-Get caught while lockpicking ( to the point where your notoriety will turn red)
-Get your cover blown ( A body has been found and identified while you are wearing his suit)
-Get caught on camera without stealing the tape.
-Use excessive violence to often( you should avoid getting into a fight with your target)
-Change your disguise/suit in front of anyone else
-Run past a guard with a metal detector. Note: You can do this if you wear an appropriate disguise ( Guard uniforms, therapist suit etc)
You CAN however:
-Sedate people as long as they haven't seen you
-Knock them out with your pistol
-Strangle or poison your target it doesn't have to look like an accident although that may make up for mistakes you've made)
-Get caught on camera if you steal the tape
-Run around in areas you shouldn't be as long as you don't stand in front of the same guard/worker/etc for to long ( this will result in a red alert status), they will follow you tho so you can use this to escape the backstage area in the Opera in the 2nd mission for example.
-Crouch around as long as you don't do it around the same target for to long
-Climb elevator Hatches while guards are looking
-Complete the mission with low accuracy ratings
-Buy Intel
Note: Even if you slip up in regards to the list of 'don't's ' : You are able to compensate for minor mistakes such as leaving your suit behind if you do everything else correct or make assasinations look like accidents. Each mission has a ' desired way of killing your targets' , if you complete the missions in the way the game secretely wants you to complete them then you are able to compensate for little mistakes.

for the mission flatline, can you also run past the guard with the metal detector while wearing a guard outfit?

Followed them to the letter, still got professional on Flatline and A New Life. Ridiculously inconsistent.

I thought these were the easiest missions to get Silent Assassin on, in any difficulty:
A Vintage Year- Run around the right side of the fence when you start, and go through the furthest door. Wait for the worker to leave, and climb over the wall going to the La Hacienda. Climb up the pipe on the wall, enter the left door in the room, go downstairs, and put on the VIP guard suit by the bed. Now run out the front door of the La Hacienda, cut right, and climb up the pole that leads to the left side of the La Hacienda. Climb through the window, go strangle the dad, then leave through the doors. Go to the wine cellar, and wait for when the second target is alone an sniffs some coke. Behind him are some barrels and a storage container. Lure him with a coin, and strangle him, then hide him. Go back to get your suit, then leave quickly, doesn't matter if they see you, as long as you get out fast. Head for the plane, drop a coin behind the first guard, then run straight to the plane. DONE!
Curtains Down- Head to the receptionist, get the real WW2 pistol. Go to the bathroom, and sedate the green suit worker, steal his clothes, and hide his body. Head out of the bathroom, and down the short stairs, and continue in that direction, go through the doorway where a guy is painting. Go downstairs, enter the room, turn rights, go down the small stair, and through the double door. Head to the door to the left, and keep going through all those rooms, til you go upstairs, and find a small room with 2 doors. Go in the left as that is the Men's locker room. Head out, and go through the double doors in front of you. Go to the top, and plan a bomb in the big dome room. Head downstairs, and go into the dressing room to your left. Hide in the closet, wait for the actor to leave, grab the fake WW2 gun, and set the real one down. Get in range of you mine. There is a place below the dome room, you can get to through the dome room where you can see everything. After the target gets killed on stage the other target will run and trip under the chandelier where you placed the mine. BLOW THE MINE! then head to the bathroom the same way you came, get your suit, and Escape. DONE!
A New Life- Get the donuts, inject them with a sedative, and place them by the van. When the FBI guys pass out steal a suit and the video tape. Go inside, and head upstairs to the room the target goes into alone. Strangle him, and drag his body out of view of the doorway. Head downstairs and outback. There is a shed, pick the lock, and wait for the pool boy to go in. Sedate him and steal his clothes. Wait for the wife to come out by the pool. Follow her upstairs. When she goes to the bathroom hide in the closet. Wait for her to shut up and go to sleep. Crawl over by her and steal the necklace. Return to the shed, get the FBI suit, return to the van, and get your suit. Escape. DONE!
Til Death Do Us Part- Head towards the main building. Wait for the guest to the left, as soon as you leave the area they're shooting at gators, to go and pass out. Steal his clothes, invitation, and gun. Head to the main building, and talk to the bride. This makes the timing right. Continue along, and turn right. Pick the lock in front of you and poison the cake. Turn back around, and then go outback. Head towards the porch one guard is sitting on. There is a container behind the porch. If Pappy LeBlanc is there, get his attention with a coin, and lead him to the container and strangle him. If he isn't there get the guard over there, sedate him, steal his clothes, and dispose of his body. Head for the graveyard, and push Pappy into the grave. Return to the guest, and get your suit. Now Escape. DONE!
A House of Cards- Go to the front desk and get your keycard. Head to the elevator on the right, go up to your room. Lure the hotel staff guy to your room, sedate him, and steal his clothes and floor 7 master key. Return to the elevators, and go to the one on the left. Climb the hatch, and wait for the first target to come in. When the elevator starts moving, strangle him from above and steal his keycard. Drop down, grab the suitcase, and head to the elevator on the right. Climb the hatch, and wiat for the other guy and do the same as before. Go to his room and get the dna case. Also go put your suit back on. Head down to the lobby and to the casino. Enter the first door on the right to avoid the camera, then go to the shieks lounge. When the dancer comes, drop a coin in the corner to the right of where he was sitting, so he'll go stand there. When the dancer leaves, strangle him. Go back the way you came, to avoid the camera. Grab the diamonds, and escape. DONE!
