How to unlock the Third Time's a Charm achievement in Hogwarts Legacy - Definitive Guide

During the main story quest "The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom" you'll be introduced to the "Nab-Sack" for capturing beasts, a Vivarium to house them and how caring for them will provide you with materials. At the very end of the quest Deek will give you the Spellcraft for an "Enchanted Loom." The Loom will grant you the ability to upgrade your "Gear" using the materials collected from your cared for beasts.

The materials needed to upgrade the gear varies and the rarer the gear the more materials you'll need to upgrade it to the next stage. For example a "Common" set of Gloves may require 1x Jobberknoll Feather, where as an "Extraordinary" set of Gloves might need 3x Jobberknoll Feathers. Also reach rank of the upgrade tends to require an additional material from another beast. So upgrade one might need 1x Mooncalf Fur but upgrade two will need 2x Mooncalf Fur and 1x Puffskein Fur to upgrade.

As long as you have captured a good variety of beasts and collect their materials regularly it should be pretty straight forward to upgrade an item to level 3. If you wanted to get this achievement out the way, pop a "Common" item into the "Enchanted Loom" and see what beast material is needed. If you don't have said material, head over to "Brood & Peck" the beast shop in Hogsmeade and you can buy the materials needed instead.

Note: Each beast will give you 3x/5x their material every 25 minutes when fed and bushed.

People having issues with this popping have you tried adding a "Trait" to see if that's related at all?

Popped for me as soon as I hit the upgrade the third time, with no trait, so it's definitely not that, must just be buggy.

you'll need specific late game materials like the horn, the phoenix feather, etc that you can't get for awhile, in order to upgrade anything a third time

You don't if you upgrade green common gear. You'll just need the more common beast materials. You can also buy everything in the shop (Brood & Peck).

Can you even upgrade green gear? It seems like every one I get says "cannot upgrade"

Some pieces do, even blues don't require end game materials.

Just want to add to this, having upgraded my gear for a 3rd time I didn’t get the achievement, however after loading my auto save from 2 minutes ago I ran the same upgrade again on the same piece of gear and it popped, obviously a little buggy but reload of the save worked for me

I did this multiple times now with several different itens, tried a hard reset on Xbox, cleaning cache and even loading an old save. This cheevo should be flagged as buggy imo.

Just wanted to update everyone on this achievement.

It was bugged on my first playthrough and didn't unlock after upgrading like 6 different pieces of gear.

On my second playthrough while going for the map chamber achievement, I continued further into the game till I got the Nab Sac Quest, this is the quest where you get the loom to upgrade at the end.

It took me 4h according to the in game save to get to this point just doing the main quests and spell quests I needed to progress, the achievement unlocked on this playthrough!

Hope this helps anyone who still needs it :)

Progress the main story until you unlock the Room of Requirement and then complete the quest where you learn how to capture beasts with Deek and he will show you how to interact with the animals and then upgrade equipment.

Groom and feed the animals to get the resources needed to upgrade a piece of equipment (blue being the easiest) three times. Check on the loom to see what item you will need to buy from the vendor and then travel to the vendor to buy it and then finish the third tier of upgrade. (all shown in video)

Once you have unlocked your magical loom within the Room of Requirement, simply fully upgrade a piece of gear using materials you have farmed from your tamed beasts to unlock this achievement.

Note: I disregarded the loom for the majority of my play through, however the upgrades and higher level traits can help boost your damage output significantly.

In Hogwarts Legacy there will come a point where you’ll actually be able to upgrade your pieces of gear, whether that’s your hat, gloves, cloak, or whatever. However, this isn’t something you get access to until quite far in the game. In fact, it’s not until you complete the 25th main mission (out of 40) “The Elf, the Nab-Sack and the Loom”, where you’ll get access to the Enchanted Loom. This valuable item in your Room of Requirement will not only allow you to apply traits to your gear, but also upgrade its stats too.

To upgrade its stats though, you’re going to need to build a bit of a farming system in your Vivariums, so I refer to The Nature of the Beast (30G) achievement for details on where to get what specific beasts in order to unlock the necessary resources you’re going to need.

Depending on the rarity, depends on how many resources you need, but you’re going to need to farm the following items if you want to upgrade Legendary and Extraordinary pieces of gear:
  • Level 1 Upgrade - Jobberknoll Feathers or Mooncalf Fur (depending on the item you’re trying to upgrade).
  • Level 2 Upgrade - Jobberknoll Feathers, Niffler Fur and Toad Warts; or Fwooper Feathers, Mooncalf Fur and Thestral Hair (again, depending on what you’re trying to upgrade).
  • Level 3 Upgrade - Graphorn Thorns, Hippogriff Feathers, and more Jobberknoll Feathers, Niffle Fur and Toad Warts; or Fwooper Feathers, Mooncalf Furs, Phoenix Feathers, Thestral Hairs and Unicorn Hairs (once again, depends on what gear you want to upgrade).
For the purposes of getting this achievement, and completing the Room of Requirement challenge, which requires you to upgrade a total of 30 items, I recommend you look into getting all 4 Vivariums as soon as possible, and capturing two of every beast, and having them 1. Breed offspring, and 2. Visiting them whenever you have a free second to groom them - you should have an automatic feeder setup to save you from having to feed them too.

Each item has 3 upgrade slots. You need to upgrade any one item to level 3. I advise you to do this at level 40, on 40 legendary type items. The reagents required there are rare.

I advise you to do it at level 40 where rare reagents are like that, as you will open the opportunity to update/upgrade your clothes, take any item with 3 blue/green holes (not sure about the green ones) and pump up 3 times, they have the cheapest reagents

Let me add that for the sake of the trophy, you can pump up all 3 cells as soon as the opportunity arises. Fortunately, all the ingredients can be bought in Hogsmeade from the animal trader

Updated the blue clothes 3 times without problems using ingredients from the starting creatures in the story, clicked the trophy

It can be done at any available time with the most basic things, but the trophy can be considered a story trophy, since the equipment is worth upgrading, because... it has a new and very significant additional characteristic.

I’ll add that by the end of the game there will be absolutely no problems with any ingredients, even for upgrading items, even for improvement. You still have to catch each type of animal and breed it for another trophy, so you will have wool/feathers/hair in commercial quantities.
