Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition

Hornet is an early boss that you see briefly in a few places as you make your way through Greenpath. This is the general route through the area to where the encounter occurs:

Be sure to hit the Bench marked with the purple star before the battle in case you die.

This is a relatively tame encounter. Hornet has a few different attacks: she will dash at you, she will throw her needle horizontally and then pull it back, she will jump into the air and then dash downward at you, and she will do a small aoe attack with thread from her needle. After hitting her several times she will be stunned briefly which is a good time to heal. Once she is defeated you will receive the Mothwing Cloak which lets you dash.

This worked for me after countless failures!

Stay on the right hand side facing left - leave the left stick alone and hold down on the d pad and jump each time Hornet comes near either horizontal or diagonal attacks and spam the x button. This will do a downwards attack whilst Hornet is under you

obviously heal when you get the opportunity but after a few attempts you work out which attacks you need to jump for and those you don't

If you have spare soul after healing throw in a vengeance attack
