How to unlock the One Shot achievement in Hyper Light Drifter - Definitive Guide
First and foremost quickly dash boarding when you die did not work for me. I don't know if I was too slow or what. Apparently the devs coded it that when you do a hard exit of the game it counts as a death. I read this on the forums for the PC version of the game.
You can however quit to the game menu if you see your going to die. This is what makes this achievement all the more manageable. Some fights can deal you a lot of damage fairly quickly so you must pay close attention to your health bar when things get hairy and learn which attacks take off two hit points.
Complete NG+ first. This is great training for your no death run considering that most attacks can one shot you.
The Shotgun. This weapon is beast against bosses. So I recommend going east first to nab this badboy after the frog boss. It also takes down some of the tougher enemies in one shot.
I've included a video below that shows a glitchless speed run. Its a great tool to see the quickest path of all four areas. I pretty much followed his route but I safely explored areas around to collect as much cash as possible. If an optional area had too many enemies or obstacles I simply backed out.
I purchased the following abilities in this order: Extra ammo for shotgun - bullet reflection using sword - chain dashing - charged sword attack
Hope this info proves useful and enjoy.. the game is great.
Thank you to GIRakaCHEEZER for providing the video.
Seems bosses are a pretty big leap in difficult from the normal enemies, if that first boss is any example.
Unless you attempt to do this on your first playthrough, you should be familiar with all the enemy attacks and hazards (those crystals in the West section especially, and any moving block sections - these can crush you for an instant death), so you'll be well prepared to avoid any deaths. Make sure you're never below three health bars, as many enemies can do two damage in a single hit. If for any reason you're out of health packs and low on health, quit to the main menu and reload, then go in search of health packs as they will all respawn. Buy the health pack upgrades in town as soon as you can so you can carry more, and avoid fighting whenever possible. If you can dash past enemies, do so.
You can also take the shortest route to the bosses, which is often finding the first four modules (see the Diamonds Are Forever achievement). The game has four they expect you to find in each section, and four that are more hidden but often in the beginning of each section. If you can get those and then make a beeline to the boss, you'll save quite a bit of time and fighting, avoiding the later areas of each section.
The most common cause of death is likely the crystal fields, as getting hit by one can knock you into a another, which will combo and take out four or more health quickly. You can roll your grenade across them to trigger them before dashing, or simply walk on and off the corner quickly. Another issue might be the large moving blocks, as getting crushed by these will kill you instantly. Be careful of the large plant monsters and the jumping frog creatures as well, those do huge quick damage. And obviously the bosses are tough as well.
Your best friends in this playthrough will be the shotgun (so do the East zone first) as it is a quick five damage up close, the projectile reflection upgrade for the sword, and the projectile absorption for the dash. Also the two health upgrades to carry more med kits. I would get grenades and the chain dash last if you have the cash.
You can watch a full no death run if you need help with any areas. Part 1/Part 2
