How to unlock the The Dash Eternal achievement in Hyper Light Drifter - Definitive Guide

First things first, you need to buy the chain dash ability from the dash shop in the town area. This is the ability where the video tutorial tells you to press cn_A + cn_A. Then, you need to go to the large room to the right of the dash shop, where you can practice your new dash ability to your heart's content. When you're in this room, there is a white counter at the bottom of the screen that keeps track of your most recent chain dash combo, and a pink counter that keeps track of your personal record. There are four things that you can unlock in this room by getting a high enough dash combo:

- The "Chain Dash Champion" achievement unlocks at 25 dashes in a row
- A gold piece unlocks at 100 dashes in a row
- "The Dash Eternal" achievement and a new color outfit unlocks at 800 dashes in a row

Now, getting 800 dashes in a row is no easy task. It took me about 3-4 hours to finally do it. In order to do a dash combo correctly, you have to time your cn_A button presses. The timing is pretty lenient, but if you mash the cn_A button too fast, you will stop dashing, and if you take too long to press the cn_A button, you will stop dashing. Not only that, you have to navigate your character around the room so that you don't run into the walls, because if you do run into the walls even a little bit, you crash and stop dashing. When I finally completed the achievement, I was hitting the cn_A button about 4 times a second, and I traveled around the room counterclockwise, doing my best to stay in the middle of the track. It took me about 3 minutes and 8 seconds to get to 800 dashes.

I found a video on youtube that shows off a similar strategy to mine (It's on the PS4, but the same methods still apply):

UPDATE:
Thanks to Awoo's comment, I found that I could more consistently complete this challenge if I muted all game audio, turned on a metronome to 240 bpm, and pressed the cn_A button whenever I heard a beep. I was also much more consistent when I dashed back and forth 2-4 times at the bottom of the room. Just choose whichever number you are most comfortable with, then stay consistent. I personally found it was easiest to dash back and forth 3 times in each direction. The following video shows my strategy off:

Also (thank you to Red Pill Chosen for mentioning this), if you still are having trouble with the achievement, you can find and equip any part of the green/blue outfit, and it will cause the timing for each dash to be more lenient. Information for finding this outfit and any other outfit in the game can be found here:
http://hyperlightdrifter.wikia.com/wiki/Outfits

Finally, it's best to choose whichever strategy that you like best, and then be consistent with it. As long as you keep trying, you will eventually be able to get this achievement. Try not to worry about how far you are; just zone out, and focus solely on your timing. You will know when you reach 800!

Good Luck!

Really tough achievement, but still doable. Some advice:

1. Practice, practice, practice.

2. Take breaks. I often found that I'd do well with my first or so ten attempts of the day, but later attempts would get worse and worse.

3. Like others have said, mute the game audio, put on headphones, and listen to a metronome.

4. I found dashing back and forth across the bottom of the room to be easiest. Four left, four right, rinse and repeat.

5. The challenge is certainly doable with the A button, but I'd personally recommend going into your Xbox's settings and mapping dash to another button. I got the achievement using RB, but choose whatever's most comfortable for you.

6. Don't get discouraged! Got up into the 600's or 700's and dashed into a wall? It happens, and such an attempt just proves that you're capable of getting up to 800. Take it from me, a guy who once messed up within 20 dashes of getting the achievement.

This achievement can definitely be frustrating, but with enough determination, you should be able to string together 800 dashes within a reasonable amount of time.

Yeah this is tough, up to 12 now. The hard part besides not crashing is the timing for getting it going, you almost have to wind up to it and increase the speed of the presses.

Edit: Oh killing the sound on the Xbox and having the video playing helps !!!!!

Mute the game, set up a metronome on your device of choice at 240bpm. Don't go in a circle, just go back and forth in the bottom half of the room, 2-3 dashes in either direction before switching. Took me like 10 minutes to do it this way, not too bad really.

I never tried this on PC, but I did it by going in a circle after about 20 minutes of trying. My best was 290, after that was 803!

Once I made it past 700 I was sure my nerves were going to throw me off, but I made it.

Slowly getting better. Turning off the sound helps and this might sound strange but not watching the character helps me , focusing on the middle and watching the bar fill up I was able to get up to 155

Getting 800 dashes takes less than 4 minutes, is that really long enough to throw in the "it's boring" excuse?

Yeah i guess so ...its just running in circle i prefer challenges with a bit more deep design...this is just a pain in the ass...I will get it but for me its not the timing wich is hard...and its no exuse it's an opinion

Then don't go in a circle. I don't see why you all insist on doing that when just dashing between the left and right sides of the room is so much easier laugh

That makes the challenge not less mono toned headspin

Any tips for dashing back and forth instead of in a circle? I definitely like the strategy better but I'm not great with going perfectly side to side. I eventually drift up or down then...crash. Wish the game allowed me to configure controls for the d pad.

Got it! Using a metronome at 240 BPM is, in my opinion, the best tip for this. That and going side to side. I did 4 left, 4 right. Just the way my brain worked best with staying with the beat.

Might need to hold out for mouse and keyboard support. This has given me a bunch of trouble. Only over 200 3 times. 538 is my best. Side to side (2x2) has worked best but I'm just not where I need to be.

I took a couple days off between serious attempts. Once I consistently could reach 600ish I knew it was within reach. I'd say look for incremental improvements in your attempts. Btw, nice job on No Death run DJ. Beat me to the 9 spot on it! clap

Thanks. And congrats on the completion PNibbles. Just need this chain dash and I'd join you as 10th. Going to have to step away from it for a while though.

YAASS! Came back to it after a full 48 hour break. Started dashing 4 left 4 right instead of 2 left 2 right. Got it second or third time with that method. Probably spent an hour total on it.

If you felt like you needed yet another clip of someone getting it. Demonstrates the 4L4R dash method. I used metronome at 240 BPM with the game muted. playing

Honestly, I don't think my thumbs have it in them to do 800 presses in quick succession lol. I'm up to 235 as my best but this achievement is a fucker.

I finally got this after a week of trying. here is what I did:
1) mute game volume
2) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JUsa0BTepkQ make sure his is louder than the click of your A button
3) cover the score at the bottom of the screen with paper/tape
4) go counter clock wise focussing on the two middle pillars as your guy comes around
5) don't overthink it. avoid looking at the middle bar. avoid focussing directly on your guy. just hit A to the beat.

Tried a bunch of times going back and forth and a few times going counter clockwise. Went clockwise once and I got it.

Back and forth on the bottom has too much unpredictable vertical movement (at least for me) and counter clockwise was counter intuitive. I found my eyes followed the movement much more naturally going clockwise.

Damn, got to 704 and then hit a wall. But it's definitely doable. I've found that the bottom of the room has a ton of leeway with the bottom wall, you can get much closer to it than you'd think without hitting it. My main issue is hitting walls, and not my timing.

So I plan to just go back and forth in the bottom part of the room, just going left and right. I got to around 400 pretty easily that way, but by that point my fingers were hurting from my other attempts and I lost the timing. This really is something you should only really attempt maybe 10-15 minutes at a time(Maybe even just once a day, tried it again a few hours later and my fingers still hurt too much to get anywhere). Otherwise your fingers will hurt too much, and you'll just be drained by all the adrenaline.

I also found going to the controller options on the Xbox One to change the A bottom to RB will give you an extra few minutes, as you'll be using your index finger instead of you thumb. Another finger that will take more time to get tired.

Yep, tried a few more times, got over 500 each time, but then I lost the timing because my fingers were cramping and hurt too much. Looking like I can only try this maybe twice a week, need my fingers to heal.

Gonna give that metronome thing a try.

Hell ya! Got it on my first try with the metronome video that the last emily linked!

Turned off all sound effects and music, went clockwise around the room. That's going in the trophy case. I can finally continue the game, to the South zone!

I'm still at this every other day I'll try a few times , one thing I'd advise is I got frustrated and went and got the outfit, and of course you have to chain dash to get it , it's not impossible but not super easy to get to it either, anyway I found after putting it on it really fucked up my timing to a point were I struggled to get over 10 , so basically if you have been at this for a while don't use the outfit, if you haven't tried that much then it might be useful

After an hour of hardcore effort I got 1102.
Here's some friendly tips:
1.Turn SFX off! It helps with the rhythm.
2.Wear at least one piece of the green/blue outfit give you a slightly larger window for dashing.
3. Don't pay attention to how many dashes you have as this might increase your heartbeat and throw you off rhythm. (Got to about 600 looked at the number then messed up because my heart went from 0 to 60 facepalm )

I went clock wise and when I felt like was getting off course or about to hit a wall I focused directly in front of my character.

Hope this helps a bit!

This challenge was gut wrenching. My top score is 831 using a Xbox One controller. I turned the in game sound and music off to avoid distractions and traveled in a counter clockwise direction around the room. At about 700 I thought my heart was going to fall out. Haha. I have a 5 minute video I recorded of it in this link:
Sorry, this Game Clip has been removed

(Yes this is my actual run at it)
One thing that may help is there is a cape/sword/bot you can wear that makes the window for pressing the button a little more lenient. Of note is that you only need to equip one of the three to get the effect. (Meaning you can equip three different items and receive three different status effects. Green/Blue Cape (Crystal traps-dash challenge)= increases milliseconds for the input window of chain dashes. I didn't find this out myself, however, and would like to thank the steam community. Namely CYBERfailzor, for his post on the topic.

This achievement is both very annoying, and very rewarding (more personally than with in-game rewards). In town, you will find the dash shop at the north end. Inside you can buy the "dash-chain" upgrade for three squares of money. This will allow you to dash continuously so long as you do not run into anything or expend all your stamina, and continue to chain the dash together with a rhythmic sequence. If you press the dash button too early or too late, the Drifter will skid to a stop.

The timing of this is somewhere around 240bpm (beats per minute). This doesn't really mean anything to most people, but a trick a lot of people on the Steam forums suggested was using a metronome. If you don't have any piano players in your house, you probably don't have one of these, but there are apps you can download. Set the frequency to 240bpm and turn off the game's sound (these clash with each other), and just press the dash button to the beat. I personally did not like this method, but did mute the game and played in silence - I got it shortly after doing this.

The achievement needs to be done in the room directly next to the dash vendor. The purple tiles on the floor here will recharge your stamina, allowing you to dash forever unless you crash or screw up the button sequence. On top of getting the sequence right, you'll also need to navigate the structure in the middle of the room and avoid the walls. I found it easiest to go in a clockwise direction around the room, but I've also seen it done simply going back and forth across the top, as well as counter-clockwise. Whatever feels good to you.

Aside from practicing, there's not much I can offer in the way of tips. The biggest issue I had when going for it was getting excited/stressed toward the end and speeding up my button presses (your heart really begins to race), which killed the combo and sent the Drifter skidding to a halt. You'll unlock "Chain Dash Champion" at a paltry 25 combo, while this achievement will unlock at 800. See the video below for a successful run (but ignore the text in the beginning, it doesn't apply to console players).

You need to do 800 consecutive jerks. They are done in the training room, where upgrades for snatches are purchased. A couple of tips:
-First, understand how to do these jerks
-There is information on the Internet that a blue/green cloak makes jerking easier. Personally I got it with blue
-Turn off the sound, because it can throw you off the rhythm
-Watch the movement of the drifter, because hitting the wall will reset your progress
-More practice and don't give up
-Take pauses after several unsuccessful attempts, as your hand gets very tired from constant pressing
At first I barely made 100, then I jumped to 200, then to 360, and then to 660 and to 792. In the end I reached 801.
After receiving the coveted 800 dashes, a door with a new cloak and sword will open
