After defeating the first "boss".. you will progress forward to an elevator/lift. Instead of going up this lift, continue upward. The area will be marked as closed, but you can dash over the gap with B and approach the door. The door will open - allowing you access to the forbidden temple.
*If the door is not opening - you may have to go up the lift first. I interacted with the frozen NPC and fought the South Area boss before returning to this "closed area" and the door opened for me. So I'm not sure when exactly the door is accessible.

I was not able to enter after beating Prisoner One and Alien Commander. I read in the steam forums I needed to buy something from the frozen dude near the lift that leads to the Forbidden Temple. I had just done it before reading it so I'm not 100% sure that was it or if it was something else, but I was able to enter the Forbidden Temple afterward.
