How to unlock the Memories achievement in In Between - Definitive Guide

This achievement is pretty much story based and you can get it before finishing the game if your game isn't buggy. I had my game miss the last five mind images when I went through it so keeping an eye on the tracker will help you know which ones you've already gotten. If the tracker still doesn't fix itself by going through it again you will have to erase your save and play through it again, that is what fixed SiedfriedX's tracker.

There are a total of 20 mind images in this game, all of them spread out through the chapter. You can tell which level has a mind image in it by the half filled circles in the level selection screen and all you have to do this is to reach the cracks which will show a mind image.

I'll leave a list of the levels that have mind images just in case someone would like to keep track this way (I'm only counting the circles and not the diamonds as levels). I'll also leave links to videos at the bottom for how to get through certain sections of the game at the bottom for those parts of the game that can be difficult.

_Tutorial - 4,5,7,9

_Denial - 2,6,9,12

_Anger - 1,5,6,11

_Bargaining - 3,6,9,11

_Depression - 2,3,5,9

All videos were made by MadpunK and are from the PC version of the game so they will not have any of the checkpoints like we do on the Xbox One.

Tutorial/Denial: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yK46uv3bApQ

Anger: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5J-A6MbjfHo

Bargaining: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cyb6P5GMJM0

Depression/End: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MYse-NsfAxQ

If the part up top doesn't help fix the tracker DVDaino360 used this to help fix the tracker:

Mine stopped at 57% after completing the game without the last 3 levels of every chapter. I picked up 1 more memory in one of the levels I had left and the tracker didn't move. Picked another one and nothing, still 57%. At this point I started taking every memory again from chapter 1 with the cheevo app snapped. After one of the levels the tracker moved and I kept replaying the levels with a memory and it went up almost every time I picked one. The achievement unlocked when I still had 2 or 3 levels left with a memory I never even took before.

If this solution is too long just give me a shout and I can shorten it :)

And I got it. Ok, here's what I did, as I kept detailed notes throughout as there was so much talk on here about how glitchy this is.

As mentioned in my last comment, I started off & I did the tutorial, skipping the extra few levels at the end, then started Denial. On level 2 of denial I popped up the cheevo tracker and was at 28%. I then got the memory on here & jumped to 35%. Same for 6, 9, and 12, I jumped to 42%, 50%, and then 57% with no issues at all.

I then quit for the night.

Next day was still at 57%. Did all levels (incl extra ones) in Anger, got all 4 memories, and not a single budge on the tracker.

I continued on without quitting to Bargaining. Played through Bargaining 1 to 3. On 3, got the memory & still no change. Finished the level.

At this point I figure "what do I have to lose" and started doing level select (I still had yet to finish Bargaining or either of the subsequent levels).

Went to Level Selection and did tutorial 4. No budge on %.
Continued through tutorial 5. No budge on memory %. Finished level.
Did level select to Tutorial 8 by accident. Realized wrong level and did level select to Tutorial 7.
Got memory, no budge. Finished level.
Level select to tutorial 9 (which I had *not* beaten previously). Achievement % increased to 64%. Finished level.
Did level select to Anger 1. Got memory, no % increase. Finished level.
Did level select to Denial 2 (which I had played yesterday and got credit for the memory). Got memory, ach % increased to 71%. Finished level
Did level select to Denial 6 (which I had played yesterday and got credit for). Got memory, ach % increased to 78%. Finished level.
Did level select to Denial 9 (which I had played yesterday and got credit for). Got memory, ach % increased to 85%. Finished level.
Did level select to Denial 12 (which I had played yesterday and got credit for). Got memory, ach % increased to 92%. Finished level.
Did level select to Anger 1. Got memory, no budge (again). Didn't finish level, did level select to Bargaining 3.
Got to memory, no budge. Didn't finish level, did level select to tutorial 4. Got memory, no budge, finished level.

Did level select to Tutorial 9. Got memory, no budge. Didn't finish level.
Level select to Anger 5, got memory, no budge. Didn't finish level.
Did level select to denial 2. Got memory no budge. Finished level.

At this point I gave up for the night, still at 92%

Next day: Confirmed still at 92%

Started by hitting continue on main menu, and this put me on some denial level (4 I think? I think where I quit last night) rather than on the last level I hadn't yet beaten (something in Bargaining). Played Denial level through to the end, no change in % (not surprising since there was no memory on the level). Did level select to Bargaining 3.

Got memory on bargaining 3, no budge on ach %. Finished level.
Progressed (played through levels) to Bargaining 6, got memory, no budge on ach %.
Progressed (played through levels) to Bargaining 9, got memory, no budge on ach %.
After Bargaining 9, skipped remaining 3 levels & went to end of chapter to get cutscene & achievement for beating Bargaining.
Achievement popped for beating Bargaining, walked through scene to tunnel to start next level and went in.
Next scene started and I hit start -> Level Select -> Anger 1
Got memory, no change in ach %. Finished level.
Level select to Anger 5. Got memory, no change in ach %. Did not finish level.
Level select to Anger 6. Got memory, no change in ach %. Did not finish level.
Level select to Tutorial 4. Got memory, No change, finished level.
Landed in Tutorial 5. Got memory, No change, finished level.
Level select to Tutorial 7. Got memory, no change, finished level.
Level select to Tutorial 9. Got memory, no change, finished level.
Level Select to Denial 2. Got memory, no change, finished level.
Level select to denial 6. Got memory, no change, finished level.
Level select to denial 9. Got memory, no change, finished level.
Level select to denial 12. Got memory, % went to 100%, got achievement.

With this, my recommendation would be if at any point you see your tracker stop tracking, immediately start doing level select from Tutorial 4 going through each of the levels with memories until you see the tracker bump up in %. As I write this now, I have the Memories achievement, but still don't have Fortune or Redemption. I haven't even started either of those chapters yet.

Mine was at 92% when I finished the game. I snapped the achievement app and found the missing memory in Denial 9, although that one's pretty hard to miss. Ah well.

How were you able to fix the problem where it stops tracking? My tracker stopped at the second image in chapter 2 and I reached 5 more images without the tracker move.

You have to go back and reach the mind image again for it to track the ones it stopped tracking

I'll put a link up for each level as well, I know some don't like going to a link, but I'd rather the solution run well and not be slow or randomly drop like I have in the past on my many devices.

Mine was going 7% at a time, then it got stuck in 78% and I can't unstuck it. I already repeated the one it stuck 5 times, the one before it got stuck 2 times... The one after it got stuck 2 times... Nothing... Anyone else knows what to do?

Have you redone all of the ones after the first stuck one? I honestly can't think of another way where it could fix the tracking, its the only achievement that's really buggy unfortunately. If you really wanted to you could try deleting the save or something though I couldn't guarantee it'd fix it.

Somerhing is obviously wrong with this achievement. First of all there's 20 memories in the game, but the achievement only tracks 14 of them. So first of all we should find wich ones doesn't add to the achievement (or even if it' random).

Up until anger 11 every single one made my tracker go up 7%. I'll try later redoing every single one after this to see what happens, but I'll only play again sunday at night.

I noticed that my tracker was at 71% when I had 15 of the 20, so the last 5 images do count for the achievement. I'll run through it on my second account to see which ones are counting possibly later tonight if I have time.

By Shadow#80380 on 11 Jun 2016 02:01
I'm inclined to think it' completely random when a memory counts. It might be one of those cases when simply erasing your save and picking the same memory over and over again might unlock the achievement.

Yeah it could be like the doom achievements where some of the collectibles you didn't need to collect them all you could just keep collecting the same one and the achievement would pop.

By Shadow#80380 on 11 Jun 2016 18:33
It seems like my previous comment is incorrect, the tracker counts each image once, though there must be 4 or so of them that don't count for it to increase by 7% each time

I contacted them about the issue. Meanwhile a completed erased my save and rushed through the first 9 levels of each part, this FINALLY made my tracker move again and I now have the achievement. So everyone bear in mind that this game might require almost 2 full playthroughs until it's patched.

For what it's worth, I was stuck at 78% as well. I was just about to erase my save when I went back as a "last ditch" effort and replayed the Anger levels that had memories (1, 5, 6, 11) and it popped after 11. I did retry a few later levels (Bargaining) first before I retried the Anger levels. Maybe this will somewhat help others. Thanks for the guide as well, Shadow!

I can confirm what DVDiano360 and OdadjianActual are saying! My tracker was stuck at 57% when i finished the game so i played each level with a image in from the beginning and on the Anger missions images i know i already had started to put the tracker up. I kept going and 5 images later it unlocked. Thanks for posting guys!

Got the achievement in the very start of bargaining. Pretty sure I reached 100% before I even got all images. But then, the tracker went up 14% for some images which obviously is more than it should. So it seems a bit off...

It is definitely glitchy. The cheev tracker locked up on me early on at about the 4th memory. I just back tracked and hit the levels with memories and they started working again tracking them. It also locked up on tracking the deaths. So I can confirm this game is glitchy on cheev tracking.

I can confirm the working methods above. In Chapter 3/4 my tracker got stuck at 64%. I always left out three levels in each chapter but played all with an image. I completed the game and started with chapter select from the beginning and played every single level this time. At some point the tracker started moving and then I replayed one of the already conpleted image levels and the achievement unlocked. I did't delete any savegames, or started a new game, just used chapter select.

I don't know if there has been an update or anything, but all I did was play all the levels in a row (I didn't skip any of the last three levels as it became available to do so). I unlocked this achievement with only the first 14 mind images. (Each image gave ~7.14 % to the progress bar.)

Mind stopped tracking at about 28%. I noticed it tick up a notch in the 2nd to last area. At this point I went back to the tutorial via level select and just did the levels with a memory. Each one I got counted even if I had gotten it before. Finished off the achievement easily this way.

Adding my bad experience - got stuck on 64%.

As for the game, first chapter I did 9 level ( had no idea that there are 3 more ), went to chapter 2 and played 12 levels. Then came back for the last 3 levels of chapter 1. Then I played the remaining chapters level by level ( all 12 in each ).

Tried to move the tracker midgame. No success, so save your rage for the actual game and don't try it until you're done 100% with all the levels. Haven't touched the save file!!!

After finishing all the levels I went back only to levels with memories, with my achievements app snapped. Played until level 5 in chapter 3, got the memory and suddenly my game went black screen, and tracker moved!!!

Played 4 more levels with memories and the achievement unlocked!

Hope this helps unlucky fellas like myself. Good luck!

What DVDaino360 said worked perfectly for me. Mine was glitched at 28% about halfway through the game, started tracking again randomly and I finished with 64%. Replayed each level with a memory from chapter 1 and it started tracking again and got it in no time. I'd try this first before deleting your save and save that as a last resort,

Ok, finished the game at 86%, it stopped tracking during bargaining/depression, I sped through from the beginning until Bargaining 3 and 6 (started tracking during 3, achievement popped during level 6) Thanks for the quick fix!

This was an absolutely great game with lots of heart in it. Highly recommend, don't be put off by a semi-glitched achievement!

Judging by the comments, I think this achievement just has to be completed in a single sitting. I kept my achievement tracker active during my first sitting, and progress advanced each time I unlocked a memory. During my second sitting, the tracker has sat at 57%.

I'll confirm during my second sitting. Edit: I finished the game with 78%, replayed the tutorial levels with mind images and the achievement popped after the third level. Each one of them counted. Odd.

Got stuck at 71% some time before I started Depression, went back and did the mind image levels (waiting extra + beating levels as per DvDaino360) from the start until anger 5 finally started giving me progress again, at 78% and ended up with 84% when I finished the game. Will be going back through from anger 5 and hopefully I can get 2 more to pop and be done with this achievement.

Update: I did get this achievement, but all I can really add is that it seems you have to find the # of mind images before the counter will start going up again in between sessions of playing the game. When I posted my original comment the other day I had to find 10 before I got progress for 11/14 and today I had to find 12 before progressing to 13/14. What I don't know is why it stops counting, after I got to 12/14 I found 2 new mind images from levels I hadn't played yet but neither counted so idk :p

+'ve from me. I was locked at 50%. I went back and did all the listed levels in order. It started moving again somewhere in Denial. Anger.11 did not count for some reason, but it popped after Bargaining.6
Definitely try this method before deleting saves and make sure to start from the beginning and work through each relevant level. I'd already re-done several of the later levels, but they only counted when I did them in order from the start. Not sure if it matters, but I also finished each level with a memory in it as I went through.

So I've just unlocked the achievement. I got stuck at 78%. There's something people might not be considering here, StK 1 seems on the money with me having to get 11 memories before it started tracking again. However, if you get a memory and DO NOT complete the level, it won't count. So if you haven't done it in one sitting you'll need to get as many memories you already have, but those levels will also need to be completed in order for them to count as will any subsequent levels With memories in. Hope this helps.

Stuck at 64 % did not get anything for 2 times and then went back to replay them all but then I also decided to do the extra levels and did all that had an image. Continued the game and suddenly on bargaining 6 it moved to 71 % and here is hoping that it will continue to move up now. Not only is this a really boring game but it is so glitchy too.

And after that it kept progressing 7 % and at 92 % I did get it even if with 7% it should have been 99%. I got it on level 3 of level depression. Thanks for all the comments and the guide. Very helpful!

Yeah that's what I'm thinking is the issue, you stop playing the game and the game doesn't save the ones you collected so you have to collect them again. Luckily there is level select so if you have to go back you don't have to go through every level all over again smile

I concur with the 1 sitting theory.

Mine was tracking fine the first night I played where I got up to Anger 11. The next day I went to play and that level's memory didn't track, nor did the progress increase for any others. I finished the game (so I collected 9 memories - my tracker stopped at 11) and level selected to Tutorial 4. Got that memory, nothing. Next one (#11), nothing. The next memory (#12 total for that playthrough) the progress went up. I collected the next 2 and the achievement unlocked. I didn't do anything fancy, just went straight to level select after the credits rolled, collected the memory and waited for the dialogue to finish, then went to the next memory level.

So in short, collect 14 memories in 1 sitting. There's 20 total, but the achievement only requires 14 despite the description implying you need them all. If you finish the story and don't have the achievement, just start over chronologically until the progress bar catches up and starts tracking again.

Couple questions as mine stopped at 57.. the last 3 levels you guys mention..I just assumed you are to play them..is it an option? Stuck at 57%. Question when going back through do you have to finish the levels with the images or can you just reveal it and then select next level?
**edit** just got it..in case anyone is wondering like I. You just have to reveal the image and then can level select the next one in order. Started at tutorial 4 and finally Started moving in Anger and finished at Bargaining 6 XD

RE: OdadjianActual

I'm with the guy that said it was a piece of shit.
The game was impressive. Challening, visually interesting and a great story. BUT THE MINUTE you have glitches that cause me to play the entire game over again because of an error or mistake YOU MADE DEVELOPING the game, then I lose all good faith. I expect a game to work properly, or have a fix shortly after you know about it. Failure IMO

Something is definitely wrong with the tracker. The achievement unlocked when I still had 2 or 3 levels left with a memory I never even took before...

Come on SiegfriedX, you think the game is a piece of shit because of that buggy achievement?

Or, maybe you think the game is still very bad even if there wasn't any buggy achievement? To me that would be fine.

The only reason I'm being defensive is because I just finished this game and found it to be one of the most beautiful and wonderful puzzle games I've ever played in my life. It feels like this gen's Braid (in terms of being the best puzzle/adventure game of the gen).

If you hated the game overall then that's fair, you're entitled to your opinion.

My counter has also stopped at 78%. Hoping that the solution above will work once I finish the game...

I have now completed the game and am still stuck at 78%. I have gone back through the early levels and re-collected the memories, but the tracker doesn't move. I then went to the area where I had been collecting the memories with no tracker movement and they STILL don't count.

Guess I'll keep trying. Don't want to start the whole thing over again...

I was having no luck going back and collecting memories from any of the levels. I decided to delete my save (local and cloud) and start over. Tracker still at 78%.

Hoping that it moves once I get to the point where it stopped moving...

OK LAST EDIT: Started from scratch. Played the first nine levels of Tutorial, Denial and Anger. On the second memory in Bargaining, the counter started going up again. On the last memory in Bargaining, the achievement popped.

NOTE: This was after deleting my saves.

I'm wondering if these progress tracker glitches has anything to do with using Level Selection to pick your next level. Mine were all working fine until level 6 o Denial where I used Level Selection to continue and only resumed tracking correctly once I reached levels 10-12 (where you have to manually select the next one anyways).

Mine glitched at 92%. I had missed each of the last three levels per "world" and just moved on to the next. After I finished the game I went back and did the extra three levels per world getting each memory but it still didn't move past 92% (though I got the achievement for finishing all levels).

I went back to the start and worked my way through each level with a memory making sure to get the memory and finish the level. Achievement finally unlocked at Bargaining #3.

I can see any rhyme or reason to why it froze or why it finally unlocked at Bargaining #3, I was just about ready to give up.

Same for me, stuck at 57%. What happened was I did the tutorial, skipping the extra few levels at the end, then started Denial. On level 2 of denial I popped up the cheevo tracker and was at 28%. I then got the memory on here & jumped to 35%. Same for 6, 9, and 12, I jumped to 42%, 50%, and then 57% with no issues at all.

I then quit for the night & came back the next day, and was still at 57%. I did all levels in Anger, got all 4 memories and not a single budge on the tracker.

Yup, this is glitchy.

All death-free walkthroughs of the 5 levels in this game, this achievement unlocked before I got all of the memories, I had the tracker open the whole time to make sure I saw the progress go up every time I found one
- These videos show the locations of all the memories throughout the game, most of them are pretty unavoidable sitting right in your path

Mind images are places in specific levels where tears in the background open up into a picture of a memory and trigger some dialog. There are a total of 20 of these throughout all levels of the game.

In my experience, all of the mind images are unmissable, as you'll unavoidably pass them all while completing all of the levels. So refer to the "Fulfillment" achievement solution for video guides of all levels, which will include all mind images.

For reference, or if you're somehow missing any after completing the game, here is a list of all levels that have mind images.

Tutorial - Levels 4, 5, 7, 9
Denial - Levels 2, 6, 9, 12
Anger - Levels 1, 5, 6, 11
Bargaining - Levels 3, 6, 9, 11
Depression - Levels 2, 3, 5, 9
