Go to Arcade mode and select a track. I used Lakeside Loop Reverse, which I would recommend as you'll get
The I've Just Been In This Place Before achievement in Inertial Drift worth 92 pointsComplete an event on a reverse track layout
since you're trying to win the event here.
Select the first car, the Terra Dart (a small yellow car).
The gold medal is at 30,000 points. You can achieve this by spamming the drift stick left and right to hold long drifts, switching to the other side before you hit the walls. Your points counter at the right hand side will update periodically, and you'll get 3x and 5x multipliers for sliding around near the walls. Very light contact (brushing the wall in a drift) is permissible but if you crash, you'll lose the points you were accumulating.
When you start the event, you'll get
And when you finish and return to the main menu, you'll get this alongside
