Critical Hits in battle can only be done with each character's basic attack. In this attack you won't do a rhthym mini-game like all the other attack types. Instead there will be a sliding scale that is moving quickly and you'll need to stop it between 95-100% to get a critical hit. If you do it too late it will have slid all the way back near 0% and you will likely get trigger happy and stop it in the low 90's often as well. Keep using this basic attack until you knock out 20 of these, then you can use your stronger attacks to kill enemies more quickly for the rest of the game.
