I got this when I had 2 in my inventory, so it seems the description for this achievement is wrong (possibly the requirements were changed after the fact). I don't remember how many I had spent before getting this achievement so I can't confirm the exact amount you need to find. However, I had several moments when I had 2 or more shards in my inventory, so I believe at least the simultaneous aspect is no longer applicable.

For whatever reason, this didn't pop for me until I had 12 shards (got it on the third island).

Thanks for the tip as it was the same for me as well. I had to get 12 in order to get the achievement!

Infinite Shards (as depicted in the achievement art) are large green diamond pickups with a yellow icon in the middle. You will find a large number of these throughout the game, and they can eventually be redeemed to upgrade your weapons. I was playing on Easy and literally never upgraded my weapons once, so these achievements came with no problem. However, with the wording of the achievements requiring you to have the described number "at once" I believe you could technically miss this if you spend your shards every time you collect them. I do feel it would be very difficult to miss though, as trips to town where you'd find a blacksmith to upgrade don't happen as often as you might collect these. Just be sure to hang on to the first few you collect and you'll be fine. I had 7 shards before I even unlocked the blacksmith, so I just skipped upgrading then and collected a few more in the next dungeon.
