How to unlock the Retro Cyclist achievement in Jetpac Refuelled - Definitive Guide

Took me a few goes to get this achievement but i found it helps if you stay on the ledge at the top right, out of the way of trouble, rather than flying around all the time. Once you've built your rocket, only leave the ledge to pick up fuel and then return.

The hardest waves are the UFOs on levels 5 + 13 I found it easier not to shoot at all on these levels and they'll all bunch up underneath you, eventually, while you're sitting on your ledge. Only shoot the ones that don't gather under you and when you venture out to pick up fuel, fly from left to right, get the fuel and then, when they get close to you, fly off the left of the screen to reappear on the right. As they cannot follow you, this should give you time to drop off your fuel and fly back up to relative safety on your ledge.

The game will wrap back to level 1 once you've finished level 16 and the achievement will pop as soon as it does. Good luck.

When I was 13, in 1983, it was the best graphics I'd ever seen and had game play like nothing else on a home computer. If you're only playing them now, for the first time, I can see how you'd dismiss them as crap but they deserve respect for their pedigree and place in history. I enjoyed Refuelled too but admit it's pretty basic.

Thanks for the tip - I hated those effing UFOs so much. Took me a few tries to get the hang of it, but afterwards the UFOs and other tracking enemies were not exactly easy but nowhere near the nightmare they had been before. Only took another half hour or so to get the achievement. Thanks!

I am finding the enemies on level 8 and 16 harder. They're like ufos but you just seem to die so quickly...

I'd like to point out how important it is to not shoot the UFOs on levels 5 and 13 when you're out trying to pick things up. And, the same goes for the blobby guys that do the same thing, following you around.

I mean, the solution says to let them bunch up under you, but I didn't understand that the point was to let them bunch up so they become a single unified enemy that follows you around and is easy to avoid.

My mistake was that I got so used to holding down the fire button, I held it even when flying around with the bunched-up UFOs, thereby killing them and throwing new ones into the mix, which would invariably kill me.

So yeah, ONLY shoot the ones that aren't stuck under you on that one platform and then once ALL of them are under you, STOP SHOOTING then fly around and do big sweeps of movement to keep them away from you.

BUT it is ALSO important to never stop shooting both left and right [or always to the right] because enemies can spawn in the little corner of the screen there sometimes and hit you before you know they're there. The stuff coming from the left is easy to see coming.

A few tips i've found:
- When you land or walk too close to an edge, Jetman will either walk on it all the way or walk off, so either land closer to the center of platforms or be prepared to fly quickly.
- Just as you move slower on the ground, the UFOs and level 8 blobs also slow down. You can walk between the bottom left and right corners with more time to think and plan for your next move.
- On rare occasions, a UFO will avoid your shots and hit you in the top corner, even if you are shooting to the right. It's important to stay vigilant.
- Most importantly, take breaks! If you're struggling to focus, come back the next day and try again! You'll get it with practice.

Just like to add that each of the levels where you build a new ship (Levels 4, 8, and 12), you get an extra life.

You also get an extra life when your score hits 20,000 and 50,000. My score never got higher than 65,000 so I don't know if you get lives beyond that.

Also, once you get to level 9, the game "loops," in the sense that level 9 is just level 1 again, just with a different ship.

The levels (and enemies) themselves are straightforward enough:

Level 1/9: Blobs. These things fly in somewhat straight line patterns, but do tend to float towards the ground. Easy to avoid.

Level 2/10: Fuzzy Bastards. These guys bounce around, but the patterns they bounce in are easy to get around.

Level 3/11: Balls of Death. These are like the Fuzzy guys, but their pattern is fairly erratic at times. Be careful, as they can turn around or go up/down at any moment.

Level 4/12: Homers. These things, which look like missiles, appear on the left side of the screen and float up and down for a few seconds, until charging straight ahead, following your pattern. Easy enough to avoid or shoot down.

Level 5/13: UFO's. These seem to be the most infamous enemies in the game, and they have a nasty tendancy to follow you around. Even worse, they constantly spawn ON YOU. Keep moving, but don't worry so much about shooting them... it's tough, but you can manuever yourself around them. If you're going to lose lives in this game, it'll be on this level(s).

Level 6/14: Plus signs of death. KILLER EQUATIONS! Nah, these are like the enemies in level 2/10, in the sense that their pattern is super easy to read, and they don't move that fast.

Level 7/15: Arrows of DOOM. These guys are pretty much the same enemies you ran into on levels 1 and 9, but they don't decend at all. They move in a constant 360 degree angle, left or right. Easy as hell.

Level 8/16: Bouncers. I HATE these guys. If you played Refuelled, these are the equilivent of those guys. They have a similar pattern to the UFO's, in that they'll hover below you and chase you around, but they're easier to avoid, in my opinion.

Once you beat level 16, the game loops back to level 1 and BOOM! Achievement Unlocked.

You get another life at 100,000. I'm not sure about 200,000 though.

For the bouncers, stay up on the upper right platform. They'll all collect under you eventually (shoot the ones that don't get stuck under the platform and eventually no new ones will come on screen). Then you can just leave them in a big cluster and easily avoid them for the rest of the level (like the UFOs).

Just completed jetpac refuelled and only have this retro achievement left. First try I got to level 6. Feel like this will be quite easy in comparison and with these strategies I should find it even easier. Thanks!

Yeah this is a lot easier than i first thought. I only had about 38,000 left when I got to the end, and I ended up having 3 lives. The only levels that scared me were 2,3, and I seemed to lose a life at the beginning of 5 before I got to the top right to group them all together sometimes. The bouncers were much easier to avoid setting that up.

Levels 5/8/13/16 are difficult and require a special strategy. The rest are pretty basic and can be done by staying near the top and constantly shooting.

Here's my complete run through the first 16 levels. You can see my strategy on level 5 starting at 4:00:

With this Strategie the Levels 6 and 12 should be way easier.

To begin with, you get extra lives by passing levels 4, 8 and 12 and also by reaching the scores of 20k and 50k, the most difficult levels in my opinion are 13 and 16

The strategy I used was to stay in the corner of the phase in most levels, there are levels that you need more specific strategies but with a little luck you can do it toast

Below is a video I made making this achievement I had already done it 2 times before recording the video, and I ask you to ignore the video with my hand appearing in the corner because it is not synchronized with the background gameplay laugh

Sorry for the crashes, this was from a live I did, I hope it helps toast

I had a real hard time with this one until I found out the upper right ledge ! Always stay on this ledge, shooting on your right to kill enemies that might appear, and you should do well. When a fuel tank appears, take it and go back to the ledge. Since the shuttle is just underneath the ledge, you will drop the fuel tank and get back to safety. The only enemies that might pose problems are the UFO's that target you (levels 6 and 12). They will get stuck under the ledge, but they can get you when you go out for a fuel tank. I found that going from this ledge to the left and continuing past the level to reappear to the right worked great with them, since they can't follow you. Always warp from left to right and they will have a hard time targeting you.
