How to unlock the Mun Rover, Mun Rover achievement in Kerbal Space Program - Definitive Guide

If you landed something that is clearly a rover on another body but the game didn't think so, keep reading as I may have a fix. If you are looking for how to build a rover and land it on another body, skip to the bottom of this guide.

I used a Probodyne Rovemate to build a standard 6 wheeled rover, placed it inside a service bay, and sent it to Duna. Landed, detached, drove off, no achievement.

This is what I did to make the achievement pop.
1) Go into the tracking station and select the rover. Click the little "i" in the bottom right, double click the name at the top of the new window to bring up rename vessel. Change the vessel type from probe (or whatever it may be) to rover.
2) Go back to your landed rover and start doing stuff and wait for the achievement to pop. It took taking control of the rover twice at this point before the achievement popped for me. I don't know if the game took a while to re-check that I had fulfilled the requirements, or if I needed to input a sufficient amount of control commands first to show it was being driven or whatnot.

It appears that the game based the type of vessel for my rover off of the final mother ship. I had built my rover in the space plane hanger and made it a subsystem before adding it to my rocket. I had noticed the rover shared the name and type of the mother ship even after driving away. Guessing the game was like, "nice rover, but unfortunately its classified as a probe right now so no achievement."

I can also confirm then too that the rover does not have to be manned, nor does it have to be on the Mun.

This will not work on something you built and drive around Kerbin, it has to land on another body. I have confirmation too that it doesn't even have to be a car-like rover or anything special, it can be any lander with wheels that is simply reclassified as a rover. Don't know if its the wheels or simply a rover with a status of landed that is the requirement.

Hopefully this helps others.

For those looking to get a rover to another body, I used these Scott Manley YouTube videos as the guide for getting my rover to Duna.

Thank you so much for the information, that you have to change the type of the vessel!
