How to unlock the To The Mun and Back achievement in Kerbal Space Program - Definitive Guide
Hi, friends
You need:
1.Take a Kerbal to the Mun, you also get this:
2.Soft land and do a Extravehicular Activity (EVA):
3.Make the Kerbal plant a flag:
4.Return the Kerbal safely back to Kerbin;
5.Done, achievement unlock!
Considerations:
This can be done in any mode, but I sugest sandbox so you get all parts for free.
First you need to assembly a rocket, you need lots of rocket fuel, a powerfull battery, solar panels, parachutes. Compensate your lack of piloting skills with more rocket fuel, the more things you add to you vehicle more heavy it will be and you will need more fuel. Do not use monopropellant, instead install reaction wheels. Instal a primary engines and tanks to launch and escape kerbin orbit, a secondary engines to get to the mun, dispose it as you land, and a terciary engines with enough fuel to take off mun and get you back. You may want to include a rover in your payload to get:
In the launch the position of the moon doesn't matter, but do it daytime because of the solar panels, +- 12 km height tilt the rocket to west, you will need to get high and the planet's gravity with pull you back, if you are going fast enough to the west side you will miss the planet on the fall and will be send away on the other side in some kind of awesome slingshot effect, burn prograde to get close to the mun orbit, if you are ahead of the mun trajectory adjust your orbit beyond the mun, if it is ahead of you adjust your orbit between the mun and kerbin. Set the mun as target in the map view, when you enter the sphere of influence, burn retrograde to slow down, and when you falling keep burning retrograde to land SOFTLY this may be 5 m/s or bellow but depend on the durability of your "ship";
Once landed get your Kerbal for a walk, play with your jetpack (X button), realize it is a boring and huge gray land and finally plant the flag;
Take of with the part of the ship that survive the "landing", once get of the sphere of influence of the mun (2,429 km), be carefull no to point you ship away of kerbin, you could be send in interplanetary space and never get back, you need to get back in the kerbin orbit, and burn retrograde to lower your orbit into the planet and slow down. Don't burn in the atmospheric entry, when you are below 500 m/s deploy the drogue parachute, and below 260 deploy the normal parachute, use more than two just to be safe, land in the ocean is preferable, as you will have more height to slow down.
When you stop on the ground or water without blowing up, the achievement will pop;
