I had trouble figuring this one out because Wake Racing and Soccer were the last sports i was working on. To join a team you must complete the Team Story Events. This could be considered the Main Story Campaign of the game. They only unlock one at a time, in the following order:
Eagle Legion - Wake Racing (Finish in top 3)
Wolf Clan - Climbing (Win)
Viper Network - Target Shooting (Win)
Eagle Legion - Soccer (Win)
Wolf Clan - Bowling (Win)
Viper Network - Tennis (Win)
Eagle Legion - Wake Racing (Finish in top 3 with your Teammate)
Wolf Clan - Soccer (Win)
Viper Network - Climbing (Win)
Eagle Legion - Target Shooting (Win)
Wolf Clan - Tennis (Win)
Viper Network - Bowling (Win)
Coach - Wake Racing (Win)
Final Event - Climbing (Win)
The Final Event is where you choose which team you want to join. You must win a Climbing Event against the two main team members and they will award you with a team outfit and this achievement. Overall this is very easy but time-consuming. The only ones that might be trouble are the Wake Races, especially the last one, as you have to compete against 7 other racers. Just avoid the mines and boost as often as you can and it shouldn't be too hard. There are more Team Stories that unlock once you join a team but i didn't bother playing those.

I quit the last wake race so I could upgrade and was given 8th place but I still unlocked the final event and got the achievement.

If you get stuck on the final climbing event, go as fast as you can at the start, then pull the second place person off the wall. Go as fast as you can again, then hit first place with the strongest blast wave you can get. After that, go fast and don't fall. If first place pulls far ahead of you, restart, because you're not going to catch them.
