Guide fails to mention you can fail the speech check, even at 20. The band of Bastards has a reputation meter, and the worse your reputation is with them, the harder the speech checks.
Unfortunately, not thinking there would be any repercussions, I got into several brawls with the bastards when going for the Ring Of Baccus' related achievements. When I get caught pickpocketing, I would let them knock me out. No problem.
Also, nowhere did it say my rep was dropping. Nobody said my reputation matters when it comes to speech checks. Nobody knows anything.
So just a forewarning, keep an eye on your reputation. I dkn't understand why I can't pass the speech check, even though Kuno and I are both at 20 speech naturally, and I drink a bard potion.
Tldr watch your reputation, and your choices matter but in a technical way, resulting in more difficult speech checks.

Losing at dice increases your reputation with any town. I remember I did this for the other reputation achievement because the merchant "exploit" wasn't working.
Be warned. I am currently dealing with a shitty glitch that is costing me loads of Groschen. After the last patrol, when gambling with Stephen Fletchling, you must wager like 400 groschen at dice. At the camp. Instead of wagering 1-100 groschen like it says, whatever you lose, another 350 groschen will be removed from your inventory. I will pay the price of this banana riding bull shit, but otherwise there is no other way that I can think of to increase rep with Kuno's band
So after a few bouts, I've gone from 0 rep with Kuno's band, to 8. This was just after a handful of losses and now I am taking a dump and imparting knowledge here.
