How to unlock the Merciful achievement in Kingdom Come: Deliverance - Definitive Guide

Guide contains spoilers.

This is not a full main quest guide but rather some tips about getting this achievement without too much hassle.

First off there are some rumours going around that you can kill people in side quests and that wont count towards this achievement. While I'm not 100% sure I would personally assume that you have to complete the entirety of the main quest line without killing anyone. If you have a side quest that involves killing someone, ignore it until you finish the story.

If you're going for the achievement I recommend concentrating on speech, you can get out of most situations with a high speech level. Also unlock the perk Empathetic at level 8, as it will allow you to see your counterparts speech level.

During the main quest there are several sections that require combat, all you have to do is stay back and watch your comrades do the killing for you. There's always at least one person who cant die, like Sir Radzig, Hanush etc. They will always keep fighting so that you don't have to. If you like you can hit enemies from behind with your fists, knocking people out is fine. If you think you've killed someone simply head to the stats section - Player - Statistics - Combat - Look at people killed, this should be zero.(or one after Runt).

Any bandits you find you can still fight them with a sword but just make sure you give them a chance to surrender, they will drop their weapon/run away.

The only difficult quest in my opinion is Baptism of Fire, once you get in to the first camp you will get the objective to kill the archers, obviously you cant do this but neither will your teammates, you can simply wait with your comrades behind the tents for a few minutes which will then eventually finish the objective for you.

After this section your men will run up the hill in to the next encampment, this is where it gets rather tricky since more than likely all of your men will die apart from Radzig and Hanush since you're not helping out that much. It can take a long time for those two alone to kill all of the men, you can try and help out but with only your fists its quite difficult, you can just hide behind the tents until everyone is dead. If archers are shooting you just hide in the corner behind the wooden hut. Once you see Radzig/Hanush by the gate to the church you can move to them which will trigger a cutscene.

Then you will have to kill Runt, this is the only person you can kill. I recommend using a bow to kill him, he goes down in 1-3 shots. I did find a bug with killing him though, I first killed him with Long distance arrows, I checked the kill stats afterwards and it said 1 person killed. I thought this was normal but I reloaded and killed him with hunting arrows and its said in the stats that I had killed 0 people. After testing from several people this is confirmed as normal, you'll still unlock the achievement either way after killing Runt.

There is another fairly annoying quest called Needle in a Haystack which requires you to
, you don't have to kill him, you can simply let him go at the end of the quest. I recommend following another guide for this quest though since it is very long winded and boring.

Every other quest you can complete easily by standing back/unarmed/with high speech. Its not hard it can just get tedious.

I tried this for Baptism of Fire but I get a gameover message saying 'too many of your men have died' whilst the two captains are still fighting.

I got that once in the first section, just stay with your men/try helping out with your fists. It's 50/50, the AI aren't always great fighters.

I got to the end Baptism by Fire and I couldn't seem to have the game not count Runt as a kill. I only had tournament arrows and better hunting arrows. Both seemed to count as a kill when I killed him. I tried one last time and on the final arrow, I noticed it bounced off him but he still died, and this third time it still said I have 0 kills in my statistics. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it, but who knows, right?

MikeButt - yesterday i found out that it still unlocks with 1 kill in the stats. It was just a visual bug. :)

The last great battle is just impossible without fighting, Bernard finds himself alone and does not attack.
Do you have any advice for this last quest? thx ;)

I had to use my fists tbf, distract the enemies so that your guys don't die. You might lose a fair bit of health, just do some trial and error.

Not sure why they even put this achievement in the game, kinda ruins the experience.

It still unlocks, the tracker stops working once you kill someone. Go by the in game stats rather than the Xbox tracker. :)

The thing is I killed people right when I woke up in Rattay... but the tracker kept going until I killed somebody actually in a main guest "Baptism of fire"... and that happens to be the 50% mark in the main quest line.

Just load to a point where you think the tracker stopped and speed run the main quest. I'm still unsure how side quest kills affect the achievement since not many have unlocked merciful yet.

So I had finished my load with side quest kills and it didn't pop!

So I ran through the main quest again with no kills anywhere and it popped no problem.

So the people out there saying you can get side quest kills are wrong.

Ok cheers for that, congrats on the annoying achievement! When I was originally going for the achievement several news sites stated it as fact that you could get kills outside of the main story. I called bullshit since I was pretty sure they hadn't completed the game.

I'm pretty sure the Runt kill count has nothing to do with the type of arrow. You simply managed to kill Runt outside of the cutscene. Runt is meant to die IN the cutscene which doesn't increase the kill counter. So when you head shot Runt with a bow then there is a fair chance that Runt is simply killed twice (before the cutscene and in the cutscene) and the first kill increases the kill counter. Good thing that the developers ignore this double-kill for this achievement...

And for the Baptism quest: I failed it multiple times because the archers eliminated too many men so I had to try something stupid. I ran up the stairs to the archers and tried to knock them out but wasn't able to do this so I fled back to my comrades. But then luckily the archers followed me and my comrades killed them. So with half the archers down the last part of the quest finally succeeded.

I have not got the achievement yet - but at least the combat statistics didn't count me killing of a camp of bandits by poisoning their food in the activity "Ruin" given by Bernard in Rattay.

Just to be perfectly clear: Animals don’t count for this achievement, right? Doing a playthrough on hardcore for this, and would rather not make it harder for myself than it needs to be.

Does it matter if you obtain the "Judas" achievement while doing this? Or are those kills, albeit indirectly?

I knocked out a Cuman and he was alive until I took his ear but my statistics don't show any human kills. Will it get in the way of me unlocking this achievment?

My "GUIDE" or rather set of instructions for the "Merciful" achievement.

1.1. Ignore the looters in the way to Skalitz after the attack, take a long way around them, it's easier than having them surrender.

1.2. Train with Captain bernard a bit before leaving to level up your strength to get the "headcracker" perk, it helped me a bit during this achievement.

1.3. To level your speech up select every dialog option at least once, just spam the skip button if it bores you, the more you talk the more speech XP you get, trust me every little dialogue option adds up. I chose the Highborn perk and it worked quite well for me.

1.4. Do not have a horse when going hunting with Hans Capon, this will make you meet the Cumans preemptively, and this mission is much easier if a stealth approach is taken.

2. I recommend using the bludgeon, bardiche(worst ax), and the trusty companion sword, as these are the worst weapons of their respective categories. Poison & Bludgeon worked well for me.

3. Go directly to Ginger's hut and lie to him, make sure that the bandit protecting the one with the hoof pick surrenders or runs, I think you can also tell Captain Bernard about it.

4. Run away from the Ledetchko bandits hunting Reeky when you find him, or suffer a possibly eternal barrage of reloads and a slow ass battle.

5. Tell the bandits Timmy's in Rattay, 8/9 speech is needed I think. drink some alcohol for +2 speech or a bards potion if you do not have enough yet.

6. As soon as you hear of the german knight, the silver contraband mine/camp spawns, instead of doing things the right way, go directly to the mining camp near Rovna and charge into the cave, ignoring the bandits along the way, following the right wall all the way until the cutscene starts.

7. For Needle in a haystack, do this, in this order, skip the tour, Tell him about your search for Pious, then tell him you know he is Pious, agree with his method of escape, sleep until 10 pm, run to the kitchen and add blood to list, then go to the pantry and get the monastery key, if you do not know where the key is, you can also get a lockpick from behind the altar in the mass room, then go to sleep, go to prayer at 4 am, after prayer, when everybody is eating at 6 am get the blood quickly, run to Pious and tell him you have the stuff, then follow the schedule until after evening mass, there go up to the dormitory and find Pious.

8. In the Vranik battle, stand back and watch the main battles from afar, when it is time to clear the scorched camp run across it until its end and the objective will complete, and the quest proceed.

9. Talmberg attack right after Vranik was very easy for me, I attacked the enemies once or twice with a bludgeon, and then ran for teammates, and they did the rest of the job for me. (This is when Sir Divish the cuck is shot.)

10. For the night raid, deliberately get caught quickly and fail, the result is the same and there is no repercussion, quickly leave back in the ladder; Though you can continue on the mission, just make sure to do takedowns and not assassinations.

11. In the siege quests, ignore everything and only do Master Feyfars trebuchet quest, after getting the commission and discovering about the assassination wait until midnight and open the door so that Peychar goes for the guard, he will lose and you will not have to attack him.

12. The LAST MISSION! I honestly tried over 20 times, I easily succeed if I start killing but obviously, I can't. I have no idea how to get past this last mission. This achievement is the only one I don't have, and it is becoming a heart demon. All negative perks 100% was way more fun and easy. I hope whoever had the idea of making this an achievement has a bad day because the made my day pretty bad.

I never had that happen, but you will just have to get stuck in and fight my dude. There were a few fights where I was running about with my fists whacking people in the back of the head. No one killed me because Henry is an Olympic sprinter.

Does killing people as Theresa in the milkmaid dlc count against this? I just realized I killed a bunch of people as her ( though not as Henry)

I don't think so but don't quote me on that. Would be a bit unfair if so. Do Theresa's kills count against Henry's tally in the stats page? If not then you're probably good.

For the Baptism by Fire bit in nest of Vipers it helps if you successfully sabotage the camp as Radzig requests. Otherwise you might run into an issue where too many of your men die in battle and you fail the quest.

So quick question... this achievement Is tracking for me and it was at 50% when I hit "Baptism on fire" which is the 14 mission (halfway through the game) I had killed numerous people in side quests and whatnot... once I killed a soldier in this mission it hasn't moved at all and I have finished the game...

Should I be able to get this achievement if I reload the Baptism of fire mission and complete that mission and the rest of the main quest line without killing anybody?

Anybody else that has this achievement paid attention how exactly this game tracks this achievement? Like will the percentage go up after each campaign mission.

The only way to fail the final battle should be to die, since Hans Capon and Bernard are immortal. If no-one else is left and they’re overwhelmed, kite an enemy away from them, and either beat them up yourself or if you’re lucky Bernard/Capon will tag along and you can take him out together. Repeat.

I would just like to confirm that, despite what the achievement description says, you will not get the achievement if you kill any person (animals are fine) in the game. That includes side quests, in the wild or during the main quests.

[despite what the achievement description says, you will not get the achievement if you kill any person (animals are fine) in the game. That includes side quests, in the wild or during the main quests/b]
Description says: "[You finished the game without killing anyone (except Runt, but he had it coming)./i]"
Killing Runt is mandatory, you can't avoid it. So, where do you see a contradiction? I don't understand your "despite".

The description before unlocking the achievement is 'Don't kill anyone during main quest line'. implying that it's only people in the main story arc that are out of bounds.

Full main quest GUIDE for the "Merciful" achievement. - Contains Spoilers

This guide does not include all of the main quests, only the ones that were relevant or difficult for me and a DLC quest. This does not include the Pribyslavitz attack, it was actually the easiest quest for me o-o, the Talmberg attack was the hard one. And finally, I'm sorry for any typos in my guide...

1. Ignore the looters on the way to Skalitz after the attack, take a long way around them, it's easier than having them surrender.

2. Train with Captain bernard a bit before leaving to level up your strength to get the "headcracker" perk, it helped me a bit during this achievement.

3. To level your speech up select every dialog option at least once, just spam the skip button if it bores you, the more you talk the more speech XP you get, trust me every little dialogue option adds up. I chose the Highborn perk and it worked quite well for me.

4. Do not have a horse when going hunting with Hans Capon, this will make you meet the Cumans preemptively, and this mission is much easier if a stealth approach is taken.

5. I recommend using fists, bludgeons, bardiches, or the trusty companion sword, as these are the worst weapons of their respective categories. Poison & Bludgeon worked well for me. (general tip)

6. Make sure that the bandit protecting the one with the hoof-pick surrenders or runs, I think you can also tell Captain Bernard about it. Go directly to Ginger's hut and lie to him about the bandits searching for him, preferably convince him to go back to Neufhof immediately without talking to that lady who owns it. (lie)

7. Run away from the Ledetchko bandits hunting Reeky when you find him if they are there, or suffer a possibly eternal barrage of reloads and a slow battle.

8. Tell the bandits Timmy's in Rattay, 8/9 speech is needed I think. Drink some alcohol for +2 speech or a bard's potion if you do not have enough yet.

9. As soon as you hear of the german knight, the silver contraband mine/camp spawns, instead of doing things the right way, go directly to the mining camp near Rovna and charge into the cave, ignoring the bandits along the way, following the right wall all the way until the cutscene starts.

10. For Needle in a haystack, do this, in this order, skip the tour, Tell Antonius about your search for Pious, then tell him you know he is Pious, agree with his method of escape, sleep until 10 PM, run to the kitchen and add blood to list, then go to the pantry and get the monastery key, if you do not know where the key is, you can also get a lockpick from behind the altar in the mass room, then go to sleep, go to prayer at 4 am, after prayer, when everybody is eating at 6 AM, get the blood quickly, run to Pious and tell him you have the stuff, then follow the schedule until after evening mass, then, go up to the dormitory and find Pious.

11. In the Vranik battle, stand back and watch the main battles from afar, when it is time to clear the scorched camp, run across it until it ends and the objective will complete itself, and the quest proceed.

12. The Talmberg attack right after Vranik was very easy for me, I attacked the enemies once or twice with a bludgeon and then ran for teammates, and they did the rest of the job for me. (This is when Sir Divish is shot.)

13. For the night raid, deliberately get caught quickly and fail, the result is the same and there is no repercussion, quickly leave back in the ladder; Though you can continue the mission, just make sure to do takedowns and not assassinations.

14. In the siege quests, ignore everything and only do Master Feyfars trebuchet quest, after getting the commission and discovering about the assassination wait until midnight and open the door so that Peychar goes for the guard, he will lose and you will not have to attack him.

15. In the last mission (the hardest one) use your best armor, pack in the potion that gives you a ton of health over time, a few Lazarus pots, a few bandages, and you're golden. When the battle begins climb the ladders first and do your best to agro every enemy there with only your fists, if you knock someone out loot all their armor and dump it, after the first set of enemies is dispatched be sure to rush to the next set enemies before your teammates, when and if only Captain Bernard remains, be sure to run away if you're low on health and take your time, what I did is I brought a poisoned sword and gave them a few pokes and then stood and watched as Bernard killed the rest painfully slowly, I only poked until blood ran out so that I didn't kill them directly.

16. If you have the Hans Capon amorous DLC the only hard part is getting the necklace, so when in the enemy camp participate in the tourney all four times, quitting each match right after starting (unless you have great dice) and allowing someone else to win, the winner will leave for Sasau after winning. While he's traveling or when he's at Sasau pickpocket him or knock him out stealth mode and you're golden.

MISSABLE

This trophy can be tricky, but not as bad as it sounds. I suggest mostly focusing on leveling up your Speech skill, as you can get out of most encounters with a high enough Speech. If you do need to take someone out, always try to sneak up on them and do a stealth knockout or use your fists instead of weapons if you're going head to head. If you do want to use weapons, use blunt ones. Be careful though, you can still kill them with a blunt weapon, because it won't always render them unconscious. Killing anyone (besides Runt) before you complete the main quest line will void the trophy.

Here are some main quests where you need to be careful:

  • The Prey - When you go to rescue Lord Capon, there will be two Cumans in the camp. You can try and knock them out, but I found it easiest to sneak up to Lord Capon when they weren't looking, untie him and run off without them ever noticing. Best to wait until night when they're asleep.

  • Ginger in a Pickle - While looking for Ginger, you'll be asked to kill bandits. If you agree, you WILL have to kill them, voiding this trophy. You have to choose the option to lie about killing them and succeed the check. Then when you find Ginger, lie to him about the bandits as well.

  • My Friend Timmy - At the start of the quest, just simply run away from the enemies. When talking to Mirka, more bandits will show up.
Convince them he's in Rattay and then stealth takedown the bandit left with you. Once you find Timmy, make sure to tell him you won't tell on him, to avoid killing him.

  • Baptism of Fire - Let your allies do the fighting. You do have to make sure enough allies survive when trying to breach the church where they can use a ram to break through the door, so you can distract the enemies a bit by punching them.

  • All That Glisters - When you finally meet up with the Mysterious Knight and if you end up having fight him, make sure to let him surrender and not kill him. Work through the quest and you'll have eventually have to find Rapota. Once you find out where the workshop is, only take Ulrich with you if you have a speech stat at 13 or above. There are people guarding the mines, just run past them and keep running to the very end of the mine and arrest Jezhek.

  • A Needle in a Haystack - Do not kill Antonius. Take the deal from him where you both get what you want and find the items for him so you both can escape where it looks like his death. After you escape, don't let him go. Take him to the Bailiff.

  • The Die is Cast - When you go to meet up with the bandits, they'll attack you since you have no proof of Pious's death, unless you can bribe them with money. When they attack, call your horse and run away. From here, you'll want to head to Vranik. When trying to escape, I suggest just heading to the area to jump down from and run away. Don't bother sneaking. Just run straight to it. When talking to your savior, just tell him "A deals a deal".

  • Payback - Let your allies do the fighting.

  • Out of the Frying Pan - Just run to the portcullis behind the houses and open it.

  • Cold Steel, Hot Blood - Let your allies do the fighting.

  • Family Values - Let your allies do the fighting.

  • An Oath is an Oath Let your allies do the fighting.

From the very beginning of the game, I recommend investing in eloquence. With its help, it is often possible to skip the battle completely. Blunt weapons can be used to stun enemies rather than kill them. However, make sure that the surrounding enemies do not accidentally kill anyone, archers are especially guilty of this! If this does happen, simply reload your last save.

Kills by other NPCs (archers, etc.) should not affect the achievement. Just in case, we check the statistics - they indicate the number of killed people, animals, etc.

If you are completing the game for the 2nd time for this achievement and you have the add-on “The Amourous Adventures of Pan Yan”, then you will have to complete it, because... otherwise you will not be able to finish the game. In the final quest “epilogue”, Jan Ptacek simply will not have the necessary dialogue appear, but only the dialogue with the launch of the add-on will hang (it can be quickly completed in 1.5 hours)

And after you finish the expansion, Ian will leave for the camp at Neuhof and he will finally have the necessary game-ending dialogue.

The short one is killed with one shot to the head from a bow. No special perks or powerful bow/arrows are required. An ordinary bow and an ordinary arrow.

If you have all the dlc, and if you are afraid of killing even animals, then you can use your dog. Animals killed by a dog are not counted in the statistics.
PS A dog can kill a person, but again, killings of a dog are not counted in the statistics.

In the latest version, killing Shorty is taken into account in the statistics, so do not be alarmed when, after the “Baptism of Fire”, you have a one in the kill column.

Just took platinum, here are some tips:
1. You can safely kill any animals, they do not affect the trophy.
2. You can trample a weakened enemy running away with your hooves - killing him with a horse does not affect the trophy.
3. Killing by a dog does not affect the trophy.
4. Kills from ticks with poison do not affect the trophy, apply poison to arrows and weapons.
5. Poison food/wine in the camps of bandits/Polovtsy with Poison, preferably at 4-5 in the morning and wait until 8 in the morning without wasting time.

1. It’s better to improve fist fights - they cannot deliver a fatal blow.
2. For a comfortable passage of the Monastery, you need to raise lock picking to at least 5 and take a skill that increases the chance by 30% when you are drunk.
3. You can kill animals. Tested on hares.

I’ll say right away that I didn’t kill anyone at all (not even the hares on the quest with Jan Ptacek).
I would recommend getting the Krasnobay potion or recipe as soon as possible. With this potion you can avoid many murders. In massive battles we only use our fists, but it is better to stand on the sidelines (in hard mode it is not possible to stand on the sidelines, so we use our fists). We always look in the “Player” section, in the statistics subsection, the number of people and animals killed. It should always be 0. On some forums they write that you can kill people, but not for the main quest. I don’t agree with them, I completed all the additional quests, and in the story I didn’t touch anyone, but the trophy didn’t drop, so I can only recommend not activating the main quest in the journal when you kill someone during the secondary quest, but that’s up to you fear and risk.
In general, I recommend combining this trophy with the “Virgin” trophy and leaving it for the last playthrough, since they greatly reduce the experience of the game.
I completed the game first in normal mode, then in “Cruel” mode, which I really liked, and then quickly ran through the story on the third playthrough.

And so everything is in order
1. Do only the main branch of quests. (Well, maybe you can do a quest for the miller from Rattay, he will teach you how to steal and break locks, it will come in handy, the quest is worthless, after we have dug up the grave, we immediately go and steal the ring from the Executioner)
2. Put this trophy aside for the 2nd playthrough after receiving all the trophies, but I recommend combining it with a virgin, therefore we will avoid communicating with women, we say in Boguta in Uzice that we will not drink with him.
3. Upgrade eloquence, lockpicking and theft.
4. Take hand-to-hand combat lessons from the centurion in Rattay, it will come in handy.
5. You can kill a short guy, easier with a bow.
6. Quest in the mine Not everything is gold, where a fight can’t be avoided, it’s better to do it with some kind of light weapon, I personally killed a man in a counterfeiters’ den with an ordinary ax, which I took from the guards, 5 blows were enough, the man gave up.
6. I strongly recommend helping everyone in the siege camp in the final quest, as it will be easier for you in the battle in Talmberg,
-meat can be obtained from cows,
- buy parsley potion in Rattay from the pharmacist Konyash (spawns 7 per day) for 60 you need 10 days, skip it and buy it.
- The only thing I didn’t do was clear the camps around, there are a lot of enemies there and it takes a long time.

- The doctor will go with you, even if you haven’t treated anyone, after he brings the engineer to the camp, in the monastery you can look at the wounded, almost everyone died, I only have 2 patients left, I gave one comfrey and that’s it, the girl nun is very angry, the quest for treatment failed, we go to the doctor and he says, well, since this is the case and I’m done here, then I’ll go with you, you also recruited all the doctors to the siege camp.
7. In fact, during the entire game I killed 2 cows, the statistics looked like this
People and animals killed - 2
People killed - 0.

I would like to go over some of the less obvious nuances.
For starters, forget about weapons altogether. No, you need to buy one copy (no matter what type) for story battles, as well as undergo full training from Bernard, so that there are no problems with Shorty. But in mass battles, weapons are taboo, only fists, since one stray parry with a counterattack, and the enemy, having received a stick in the face, falls to die. And in general, try to avoid combat, since there are very few situations where an enemy with low HP gives up, often he will simply die or fall with a mortal wound. So it’s better to bypass the enemy, and if you can’t, then wait until night and strangle him. Or run away.

In the quest "Prey" - on a hunt where you lose Ptachek, it is better, having found him and received a mark for completing this stage of the task, wait until night and quietly untie him.
In the quest “The Hunt Begins,” when you find two bandits in the forest (one of whom is wounded), wait until they are mentioned in Red’s dialogue and rush to Bernard, he and his squad will kill the second bandit.
In the same quest, if you need to kill two bandits who are looking for Red, you can also call Bernard. He annihilates them solo.
In the mission “All That Glitters”, namely in its final part, where we need to arrest Jezhek, we do not call Ulrich for help, but sneak into the mine on our own at night. If someone already inside notices us, we’ll sprint all the way forward. After the cutscene, Jezhek will be alone.
To get through the Monastery as quickly as possible, you can tell Anthony in the first dialogue about your task and that we know that he is a Saint, and then we act according to his plan.

Before the quest "Prey" you should not buy a horse. I played through the game several times, and in that case, when by that time I already had a horse, you and Ian rush together on horseback after a boar, and then the Polovtsians attack you. You can run away from them, but the “you are in combat” icon does not disappear. The only way out is to get into a fight. So if you are going for the “Merciful” trophy, you don’t need to buy a horse before this quest. Then you can calmly wait until nightfall and quietly untie Ian from the tree.
