After a tower is upgraded to level 3, there are then 2 different advanced upgrades. Only one of the 2 advanced upgrades can be chosen.
Go to the ENCYCLOPEDIA on the map screen to see the list and descriptions, but here they are and when they unlock:
SHARPSHOOTER TOWER ->
RANGERS (mid-way through level 5, Silveroak Forest) or
MUSKETEER (level 7, Coldstep Mines).
KNIGHT'S BARRACKS ->
HOLY ORDER (level 6, The Citadel) or
BARBARIAN HALL (level 8, Icewind Pass).
WIZARD TOWER ->
ARCANE (level 6, The Citadel) or
SORCERER (level 9, Stormcloud Temple).
DWARVEN HOWITZER ->
BIG BERTHA (level 8, Icewind Pass) or
TESLA X104 (level 10, The Wastes).
This is likely to be unlocked playing through the campaign. The different advanced upgrades can be used on different levels and still be counted.
