How to unlock the A Life of Crime achievement in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Definitive Guide
You can get this achievement as well as the Crime Dosent Pay achievement. Once you have enough money saved up Select any town you wish , Walk up behind any one and press RB to go into sneak mode. Make sure you are not hidden and you have a 90-100% chance of being caught. Pickpocket any item off of them and have them call the guards and let the guards catch you. Select to pay your fine and have your crime cleared. You can pickpocket the same person over and over as long as they have items to be taken. Do this over and over 25 times and the achievement will pop. During the process You should end up getiing the Crime Dosent Pay achievement for spending 10,000 gold on crime bribes.
This method requires approximately 50000 gold, and you don't have to run around looking for filled pockets to pick.
Save your game before executing this method and reload to get your gold back afterwards.
Find a nearby guard in town, put off npc safety and attack him. He'll interrupt you with dialogue and when prompted, pay the fine.
Since paying the fine is your standard option and npc safety turns back on after a cooldown, the only thing you need to do is hit X (attack) X (skip dialogue) A (pay fine) X (skip dialogue again) in rapid succession. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes, the only thing you need to look out for is that you don't kill the guard, simply move to another one if he's low on health. There should be several nearby as they all come running when you commit a crime.
It's not a disaster to kill him, but the fine will be much higher than regular assault.
Do this 25 times and the achievement will unlock, with 'Crime Doesn't Pay' along the way.

Though the Guides Already mentioned are Awesome.. I found a way to get the Crime Achievements and Get EXTRA space for you Bag! Once you get to Mel Senshir find lllyn Doldran, he is one of the 6 sellers that have a backpack for you, once you Bought the backpack, select the up directional pad and KILL HIM, yes yes... KILL HIM!!! Let the guard get to you and Pay the Fine. Go to your House in CANNEROC and Sleep for 4 days. Go back to Mel Senshir and he will be there Again. (Carefull He might be Trap on the pillar, Curious bug) Only worked for me in the House of Canneroc,
You Will need 8.000 coins for each backpack and aprox. 20.000 for paying the fine of each Murder
So... 25 Crimes... 25 Backpacks 250 slots for Coool Rubish stuffs for sell!
It's INFINITE Glitch!
Happy Hunting!

I can confirm this "glitch" still works (as of today - June 12, 2013). The only difference is that, for me, assaulting and killing guards/people did not unlock the achievement. Only when my pickpocket counter hit 25 did it unlock. But, I no longer worry about how much crap I'm carrying!!! Thumbs up, Hawk!

I just saw this today and have long since purchased this backpack. Thought I'd give it a try anyways. Although the guards attack me for the murder (it takes 2 hits for me to kill him for some reason), going to Canneroc (Gossamer End) and sleeping for 4 days DOES still cause Illyn to return with another backpack! I'm currently playing the NTSC-J version via backwards compatibility for those curious.

Super easy, super fast. You only need about 23,000 Gold.
Go to Gorhart and pickpocket the guard outside the tavern and pay the fine. 871 Gold I think.
Then do the same to the guard walking around the tavern and the one at the jail. They should all be pretty close to you, since they run toward you when the first guard calls.
Then go inside the tavern and back out. The gold in the gaurds pockets should refresh for a few times. when that runs out, hit up the lady walking between the tavern and the jail. and the farming couple accross from the tavern. there is also a man on his knees before the stairs to the church type area. Took me five minutes.

Another possible solution for this achievements comes a bit later on in the game during the Travellers questline. There is a quest called "Outside the Box".
The Hierophant sends you out to collect a certain item. Within the quest, you will have to steal that certain item from the Adessa Armory. The Adessa Armory is guarded by some gnome guards, that will arrest you when being detected.
So what I did was to run into the Armory and started a little rampage, stealing stuff from the chests around until I got detected. Being detected results in a 421 gold fine. After you paid the fine you will find yourself outside the Armory again and can start anew until you get the 25 crimes.
Doing this 25 times took round about 20 minutes plus I also got the

achievement (25x421=10525; you can even add a larger fine by stealing items from the Armory before being detected). This trophy is best worked on in conjunction with the "Crime Doesn't Pay" trophy as you can work on 2 trophies at one time. Going this route, I found making a separate save (as I was on my "good" playthrough) and just heading into a larger town and pickpocketing everyone netted this trophy in a little over 10 minutes. Didenhill was a good option for me as most people had something to pickpocket but most larger towns are a safe bet.

I got this in Ysa Village. Equip a low level dagger and Just go to any Ysa citizen, enable aggressive mode and attack the citizen. The crime "assault" will show up and guard comes rushing towards you. The fine should be just around 480 Gold. Enable aggressive mode and attack again. The guard who just stopped you should be very near and will again confront you. Pay fine. Repeat 23 times more. If the citizen is dead, find another one. With low level dagger the citizen should survive 25 assaults.
Go to a town or village with guards. Go in stealth mode and start to pickpocket people. Make sure people notice you. Pickpocket only 1 item at a time, so you can repeat this with the same person several times. Wait for the guard to show up and talk to you. From there choose to pay a fine. This way, you’ll be able to continue to pickpocket people. Repeat 25 times. (Paying a fine will not only let you quickly go back to stealing, it will also count towards the Crime Doesn't Pay trophy.)

A different tactic by F8L Fool:
Remove your weapon and walk up to a guard. Turn on aggression then punch them. Immediately pay the assault fine, then punch them again. Rinse and repeat.
Any crime you commit must be seen; this can be assault (damaging a person), murder, theft, etc. Simply get caught for crimes 25 times and you're set. If you pickpocket a character then attack them and run away out of the village for a day or two of in-game time, it will leave them alive and give you the credit you need. Or if you have the money, simply commit the crime and pay the bribe to try and knock out the bribe money as well for "Crime Doesn't Pay."

For those who can’t wait to get this trophy, there is a simple way.
We save about 40,000 gold in our wallet. After which we move to any city where there are guards. We switch to aggressive mode (up arrow on the cross) and attack the guard (one hit is enough). When he speaks to you in the dialogue, select Pay Fine (an attack on a guard costs a little more than 1,000 gold). After completing the dialogue, we attack the guard again and so on until there are 25 arrests.
ATTENTION. If you attack the same guard, sooner or later he will die, then the ransom amount will be something like 10,000 thousand. Therefore, be economical - attack different guards. Fortunately, there are many of them in cities.

You can significantly reduce the cost of the process if you don’t attack, but steal, combining it with trophies for successful/unsuccessful theft:
It is convenient to steal from the sellers to whom you sell your goods; they may have it in their pocket in full.

I found a slightly more profitable way to get this trophy - by robbing the guards. The point is this: the guards have mostly 400 to 1200 coins in their pockets. If you consistently steal money and pay a ransom (which for a single theft is always 555 coins), then by the time you receive the trophy you may well remain in the black. I received this trophy in Adessa, earning approximately 1500 coins.
