How to unlock the Destiny Dominated achievement in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Definitive Guide

Destiny Dominated (100g)

You get this achievement for beating the game on Hard difficulty. In fact this only requires that you beat the main story quest (the one at the top of your quest list). You'll probably want/need to do some side quests just to get your level up but don't go nuts with it, I was only at around level 20 when I finished the game.

I'm not saying this is the best way, but this is how I did it.

I had nearly all my points in Sorcery. Get your Ice and Shock magic attacks leveled right up. I used chakrams as my main weapon and so had that all leveled up too. Aside from Ice and Shock I also had the Healing Surge and Summon abilities leveled and placed in my quick-select.

Then it's just a case of getting a few bits of clothing that regen your health (you can make this happen by getting your sagecrafting up and making a health regen utility gem and sticking it into a bit clothing that has a utility socket) and mana and picking up some sweet weaponary. Secondary weapons aren't too important but I went with a bow just to get some extra hits in.

The key to winning the big battles is to buy a lot of health potions and save up your other potions too. Especially health regen and Hardened Shell (which limits the damage you take). The you want to get some Fate potions (you can make these if you have, I think, level 5 in Alchemy). These let you go into that mad fate-based rage mode. Essential against the big bosses (but not the final one).

Good to know you only need to do the main questline. Very annoyed to find this achievement under the "secret" section. I would have played it on hard to start, but didn't see this achievement when I started and I currently have about 35 hours of play in.

Just got a message about this on Xbox Live.

1st thing was that that you can't change difficulty and apparently I said you can. Well I didn't and confirmed that in the comment above.

2nd thing was that they doubted I was at level 20 when I beat the game. Check my achvs. I did this achv before doing any of the factions etc.

Also the whole reason I posted was to say this. I levelled up during the final fight. If this happens don't apply the level up as it glitches your game. Your character starts running round in circles or stands still and you can't make him do anything. I guess this is very unlikely to happen to anyone else but still. Just in case.

Dodging and Blocking are both essential to doing this frustration-free. I used a Might-Sorcery build, so that upgraded my dodge to blink, which was immensely helpful.

What's got me concerned about this achievement is the prompt that keeps coming up when I lose a battle a couple of times: "Do you want to switch to Normal difficulty?", which defaults to "Yes". Since pressing A there switches the difficulty, and I'm usually already mashing the A button to start running, I just know I'm going to switch the difficulty without even realizing it eventually. Anyone know if that will void the achievement permanently, or if I can just go back to a save file before the switch?

you can go back. I dropped down so that I could kill a character X amount of levels above me and then went to an earlier save. Didn't have any issues.

There is a bug in the main story questline making the following achievements unobtainable for that playtrough:

Destiny Defiant
Green Thumb
Loremaster
Destiny Dominated

A fix is intended for this glitch as announced per 16-05-2012

source: http://forums.reckoning.amalur.com/showthread.php?5901-Repor...

*spoiler alert*

The glitch occurs when a player destroys any of the tuata mirror/crystals (after the Hero of Mel Senshir achievement in the new area which unlocks then) before the main quest "Silence Falls" is obtaind and/or inactive.

errr I destroyed one of the crystals before I accepted that mission and I got all my achievements? Anyways My speed second playthrough took 13 hours compared with my 67 hour first run, I leveled up my protection sphere first then the summoned ally as it has the ability to steal health off enemies so i was constantly getting healed without having to do anything! Was around level 23 when I completed it on hard. =)

Completed it in just over 11 hours at level 21. Probably could have been under 10 hours if I hadn't done a few sidequests.

Fun fact about the boss, you can glitch it by dealing to much damage, the bos then skips a stage, but you don't...

Not a problem. I did the same thing to get the achv for killing someone four levels above or whatever. Didn't have an issue.

I haven't gotten the achievement for killing something 4 levels higher than me, because i never met anything 4 levels higher than me, I did every side quest i found when i found it so i was pretty much always over leveled, I was level 39 by the time I walked up to the final boss.

^ If you read the solution for that achievement you will see that you can get that literally after finishing the tutorial, really easily!

Can someone tell me, does this game have a New Game Plus option? I'm playing on Normal and want to know if I can play through again with my current character when I finish the game.

I just started the game a couple of days ago, and came here to look for a good strategy. Turns out my approach is pretty similar to yours, except the ice part. My chakrams has fire and lightning, and I put all my points into shock (the first magical skill I had). I'll take your advice on improving ice skills and hopefully this would be a cakewalk. Thanks and +1.

I did it at level 25 so I don't think it's that unbelievable. The hardest fight I thought was the Troll boss in Haxhi. But if you learn to dodge even that's easy. Your build is fine but i'd suggest ignoring ice and leveling up the first set of protection spheres. It lets you take a bit more damage and stopped me getting one shotted by a lot of enemies. Also if you cast Elemental Surge > Meteor > Tempest (If it's even needed) It's goodnight Vienna!

Just finished my hard speed run in 10 hours 25 minutes (could have been under 10 hours if I didn't do any side quests), there absolutely no reason you shouldn't start this game on hard to begin with. I was also level 22 at the last boss fight.

Thanks for the tips, I did use a pure mage character. A few tips I would give:

If doing a hard playthrough speed run, there is absolutely no need to do ANY side quests, you will level up enough just by travelling through the areas to your next mission and from the mission rewards. If there was one side quest you should do however, make it the Selkie Veil one if you are playing as a mage. That helm is a god-send for mana regen.
Keep travelling back to Gohart and stock up on Minor Health Potions, try to carry around 100 at all times and around 50 minor health regen potion. Also keep a good stock of steelguard potions, some bosses can and will 1 shot you and Tuatha Priests are annoying as hell.

The only parts that may give you any trouble are:

Use fateshift on Balor, you should be able to finish him in 1 fateshift, it not use a fate potion to take him down.

Cur Vengeance is a dick, he can and will 1 shot you and those Niskaru adds are a pain. Make sure you save just before this fight, fateshifting and dealing as much damage as you can is imperative, use a fate potion if you have to.

Gadflow can also be annoying, 1 fateshift should be enough to do 50-75% of his health, I'd recommend another fate potion just to take him down as quick as possible.

Save 3-4 fate potions for the last boss, you'll kill it within 30 seconds if you use fate potions.

I found the 3rd upgrade for thunder to be great when dealing with large groups of enemies and bosses. I was usually able to wipe out a large group of tuatha in one cast, 2 if they were being a little annoying. Some Thunder+% equip would be handy.

The fae gortia summon was in my opinion absolutely necessary, when my character was alone, I needed the fae gortia to act as a tank so I could use my magic from afar.

Great guide though!

There is no reason not to do this on the 1st play. Take your time and enjoy the game go for all the other achievements on the way respecing if needed to get the others.

You might die a handful of times by being careless like not having health potions or watching the health gauge.

I played as a warrior and before I got to the east of the map I was level 30 and ridiculously over powered as a warrior.

Might be a little tough in the beginning but that's not saying much as even on hard this is not a difficult game....... It's certainly not Dark Souls hard that's for sure ;)

If going the warrior route a few points in sorcery helped early for spells once I got relentless assault in the warrior tree maxed I was unstoppable.

Other than that all I can say is if going for all in one play, start on hard, max detect hidden and persuasion asap, and get some points into dispell then alchemy as they will help pass speechchecks and show lorestones etc on the map. Some of the other skills are required not just persuasion to pass some speech checks.

There is a reason not to start on hard, I dont want to lol. Anyway, thanks for the tips for when I do get round to it though. Also is there a new game+ option or would I start from scratch again? That way I can get the skills you mentioned up before starting hard

Thanks for this guide. But I still got a question: I started on hard but i once switched to "easy" - after saving - for the "kill an enemy 4 levels higher than you"-achievement. After unlocking this I reloaded my save and continued playing. Did I just screw this achievement and do I have to start over now?

I'd started on hard for my first time to play, and just finished the story this evening. I'm glad I did it this way instead of doing a second playthrough because there's no way I'd go through it again. I didn't find it tough even on Hard, but it was a highly disappointing game in my opinion.

I read this a year or so ago when I started playing the game and had no idea what Dark Souls was. I've played that game now, and I agree with you. Even the tutorial section is hard on that game. I'll be going back to this game very soon, though I completed it on the PC shortly after it came out.

I started off the game on Hard, not even knowing there is an achievement for it. don't know how the other diff lvls are, but for me, this wasn't all too hard. if you'd start up Skyrim on Hard, it would be 10x harder.
I think you can easily start off on hard, still enjoy the game a lot, and save yourself a whole lot of time by NOT having to do a second playthrough. Agree on the Persuasion and dispell skills, these are the 2 most troubling ones to me as well. If you're going for completion, save the fun skills like smithing and sagecraft to very late in the game, just before your final confrontation. Lvl up your Achiev requerement asap
Played as Rogue, and switched to Warrior/Rogue 2/3s of my quest, never had too much trouble.....

To add to what PeaceSquid said, I just did this using a mixed Might/Sorcery with Chakras. Most of the game I had some agility too but near the end I respeced since I found sneaking wasn't helping much.

Health potions are a must, minor worked fine for me, mostly filled my health bar.

I did not spend a lot of time working on side quests. Maybe three to five hours on side quests at the beginning to level up and get gear. From there you will get most of the gear you need and all the xp you need as you progress. I am relatively certain the dungeons adjust to your level. When I started the final quest chain I was lvl 21 and had little trouble, although I did find it useful to sprint past a lot of enemies to save on frustration.

You don't need to be a wiz with the fighting mechanics. Spamming chakra attacks with occasional lightning bolts on trouble targets, like casters and heavy hitters, should get you thru most of the fights. Avoid the Sprites if you can help it.

Final battle is rather easy. Its the third to last boss battle that gave me the most grief. You will have NPCs helping you and a small room you can duck in to funnel the enemies.

Amalur really doesn't have a particularly steep difficulty curve, if you have any trouble back track and level up a little more, I did pretty much every side quest as i went along and had completed all faction quests except the travelers before making my way to the final area, by which time i was level 38.

I would suggest investing in the Black-smithing and Sage-crafting skills as well as alchemy and detect hidden. Armour and weapons made though black-smithing will almost always be better that what you can find, especially if you are using high end gems crafted though your Sage-Crafting skill

My build was as a Sorcery / Finesse Hybrid, this worked out very well, I used poison and burning damage on my weapons (Faeblades and Chakrams) the reason being is poison status effect cuts the damage opponents deal out by 50% and fire will fear most enemies after while which allows the S/F hybrid to generate criticals the entire time which also regenerates your mana. I also used the sustained abilities Envenomed edge (upgraded as far as Mysterious toxins) from the finesse tree and Sphere of protection from the Sorcery tree these help reduce the amount of damage you take from your opponent.

For the final boss fight you can only damage the boss while in reckoning mode, Take lots of Fate potions (4x essence of fate to make) these will fully replenish your reckoning meter instantly making the fight a lot shorter as you wont have to generate fate off of the ghostly replicas of yourself that the boss creates. These replicas will use the same weapons and abilities as you do.

Simply play through the game on the hard difficulty to get this achievement. Switching the difficulty via the menu before the final battle will not unlock the achievement, so you must play through the whole game on hard. You can choose your difficulty when you start a new game.

Note: Be aware that the achievement takes over 30 seconds to unlock, so don't freak out when you finish the game and nothing happens right away!

If you die a few times in a row, the game will ask you if you want to change the difficulty. Be careful not to change it! Once you've obtained this trophy, it's save to change difficulty.

At the start of the game, you can choose a difficulty. You can also change the difficulty in game. However, this trophy requires you to complete the game on hard. So no switching to a lower difficulty. You only have to do the Main Story Quest line on hard, which consists of 14 quests.

Hard difficulty isn’t really that difficult. Here are some tips:
  • Buy, find or create health potions. They are easy to find, to make and very cheap to buy. There’s no cool down, so you can spam these by pressing :left: as much as you want.
  • If you have an ally with you, let him/her advance first. Make the enemies target them.
  • Save often. Once you die, you’ll have to load your latest save.
  • Use reckoning mode (hold :l1: + :r1:). If you’re having a hard time with a group of enemies, or a boss, you can easily win by using reckoning mode. If you don’t have enough fate, leave and kill a few enemies elsewhere. (Or use a Fate potion.)
  • Learn your opponents attacks. Dodge and Parry whenever possible.
  • Know your moves/combos.
  • Use your surroundings. Enemy attacks can't go through solid objects.
