How to unlock the Diamond in the Rough achievement in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Definitive Guide

First you must have at least the second milestone in sage craft which allows you to combine 2 lower quality shards to create a higher level shard (you reach this milestone by having 3 points in sagecraft skill).
Once you have that, all you need is two lambent quality shards (of the same type) to combine. This will give you the pristine shard for the achievement.

As far as I know at this time they only go up to pristine but I am not very far into the game so it can possibly go higher than that. As soon as I know for sure I will let you know.

Found out this morning that two pristine shards will show up in the list when you want to combine shards but it says that you cannot combine above pristine.. hint that maybe they are planning on increasing this in DLC?

That just means you can't combine 2 pristine shards to make a higher level, but can still use them with lower level shards, which is why they show up in the combine list.

I believe that is only when crafting gems, you can't combine shards of different qualities to make other shards.

You can buy them from certain dealers or you can combine 2 cloudy shards to make a lambent one.

so 2 of the same cloudy ones work? because when I tried 2 cloudy fire shards, I didn't get a lambent one, & i have 2 points in Sagecraft.

You need three points in sagecraft to be able to combine. You get the second milestone at that point which allows you to do this. Let me know if that helps!

I've followed the guide to the letter and no achievement pops for me. I have the Sagecraft at the correct level too. Don't know why it won't unlock for me. Any advice would be grateful. If anyone wants to chat over XBL about it then I'm all ears.

It didn't unlock as per guide. I got it by selecting the "strengthen" option in the sagecraft table. I selected a lambient shard, it became a pristine one, and achievement popped.

first you must have 3 points put into sage craft then it is just a matter of going to a sagecraft altar selecting craft gems then select the strengthen shards option from the menu and combine 2 of the same lambent quality shards to create a pristine shard

Thank you, THIS solution works [strengthen shards are the key - the other categories didn't work]

Once you get 3 points of higher into the Sagecrafting skill, the option to "Improve Shards" will now be available at Sagecrafting altars. All you need is 2 Lambent quality shards of the same and you can improve them at the Altar to craft a single Pristine shard. If you are early in the game then you may only have a few Cloudy Shards, keep in mind that 4 of these of the same type can also equal one Pristine shard.

Shards can be found in a variety of places and also purchased from Sagecrafting vendors. You should have quite a few by the time you get to a high enough level to complete this.

Keep in mind you can always use a Fateweaver to reset your skills and stats (for a price), put points into this ability, net the trophy, then restore your abilities at a Fateweaver once more.

This achievement can be obtained by combining two of any quality shard - cloudy, lambent, or pristine to create a pristine shard. You will need to be at least level 3 in Sagecrafting in order to get this achievement. Shards can be picked up from anything, but are most commonly found in chests and warded objects. Visit an altar, such as the one in the building in Gohart, reachable after completing the "Crisis of Faith" quest to craft these gems.

Crafting a Pristine Shard requires a Sagecraft skill level of 3. In order to craft an Pristine Shard, you’ll first need 2 Lambent Shards. You can either find, buy or craft them like you’re going to do with a Pristine shard, by combining 2 Cloudy Shards. Find a Sagecraft Altar, choose to Craft Gems > Strengthen Shards. Select a Lambent shard to your liking, you’ll need at least 2 of them, and craft a Pristine Shard.

1) Upgrade the "Sagecraft" skill to the third level.

2) There must be 2 identical Shards in the inventory

3) Find the Sagecrafting altar, click Craft Gems, then Strengthen Shards, select any shard, you get

The inventory should contain not just any two identical Shards, but two identical Lambent Shards, which, in turn, can be made from two pairs of identical Cloudy Shards.

It is from two Lambent Shards that the Pristine Shard required for the trophy is obtained.
