Backstabbed 20 enemies.

How to unlock the They Never Saw it Coming achievement in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Definitive Guide

To backstab an enemy, you either need to have a pair of daggers or faeblades equipped in either weapon slot. Then essentially all you have to do is sneak up on 20 enemies and backstab them for the achievement.

I found a great spot to grind this out was in the forests north of Gorhart. Enemies appear as arrows on your mini map, you can use this to help you sneak up behind them. I also leveled my daggers up a bit so that I could quick kill enemies in one shot (you will know this is possible as when the X appears to backstab an enemy, if the X glows Red in color you will kill the enemy with the backstab).

I also had 3 points in my Stealth ability which helps a lot. Watch the icons above your enemies heads as this will help you indicate when they are close to detecting you. If you sneak up on an enemy and another sees you, you can quickly roll out of the area and usually (not always) they will leave you alone after a few seconds. Rinse and repeat til the achievement pops.

A helpful note from user Soulflare: Enemy locations as arrows only appear if you have invested 3 skill points into the Detect Hidden skill. It requires 1 point applied into Detect Hidden to even see enemies positions at all.

A minor note courtesy of user Saber LoneWolf: You do need at least 1 point in the Finesse skill called Assassin's Art to have the ability to backstab. Please note that all new characters are automatically given a point in this skill making it possible for any character to backstab as soon as they receive a pair of daggers.

In the first paragraph you stated that you need to sneak up and backstab 25 enemies, but it's actually 20.

Other than that great solution. Up voted.

DO these need to result in an outright kill form the backstab? I'm sure I've done 20 by now but I'm also sure I did not kill 20 from that action

@Calex dEUS - No you do not need to kill them with a backstab for it to count. You just need to land the backstab, then finish the enemy off as necessary.

Can you kill npc's town with backstabs? if you turn secure mode off?

Yes you can though I will have to test to ensure this counts towards your backstab count or not. I don't see why it wouldn't but again I'll need time to confirm.

I can confirm if you kill NPC's in towns it will work. Just backstabbed 5 and it popped for me.

@Saber LoneWolf, @psiguy3 - You do not actually need points in this skill to backstab. This skill only helps you to kill your enemies outright if you can beat their damage threshold. The more points you have in the skill, the higher the rate of instant assassinations you can perform.

As stated in the original solution, all you need to backstab is to have daggers or faeblades equipped. You are able to backstab in the prologue before you have ever assigned a skill point in any tree. If you don't have points in the skill, you can backstab and it will count towards the achievement even though the enemy does not die.

Hope this clears up the trouble!

Can confirm what mitchcraft says ... faeblades do not count towards this achievement, neither do backstabs that don´t kill your targets in an animation. Cause I have backstabbed 39 enemies with feablades and without killing - no effect. Backstabbed 28 weaker enemies with the result of killing them on prompt but without animation - no effect. Looking now for some nice daggers and try it again ~~

For the backstab to count, is it safe to say that you can't be seen by ANYONE? Not just the person being stabbed?

I can confirm Faeblades do not count toward this, as I used them for most of the beginning of the game, and after 50+ backstabs, still no pop.

Popped using daggers, also it seems to work as long as you get the X prompt, regardless of if you've been spotted by another mob. Can anyone else confirm that point?

gotten using faeblades with a combination of x on beasts and y on humaniods. I was near endgame and 1 shot everything. I was also seen by enemies sometimes, although I didn't keep strict track so they may not have counted.

As a note the smokebomb skill does wonders for this as it makes you invisible and you can walk around enemies that have already detected you to backstab them after using it; and those count for sure since it popped while I was in invisible state vs an enemy that saw me before the skill use.

I was doing your guide and it was working perfectly. My achievement progression got stuck at 83% and will not progress any further even though I'm still killing enemies with my abilities. This has now also happened to me for the "They never saw it coming" achievement (it's stuck at 25%). Can anyone advise if they had the same problem on these quests ? I'm so close to completing all my achievements and now they aren't progressing and I am incredibly sad about it.

Razor8674 - very odd. Your achievement could be glitched unfortunately as 38 Studios is no more I doubt well ever find a fix for thus. I would recommend you start a new character and skip the intro. You cm start backstabbing immediately be see if it will unlock on a different save file. Lots of luck!

ignore the comment that u can get this even if its not a full kill, it doesnt work , i have been doing that for ages but i got it after i started getting full on kills using daggers only for some reason the fae blades would never kill

so yeah u need to use daggers that will kill and it needs to be a full kill

you should add this to your solution so people are not confused by your comment then i will up vote you

@Saber LoneWolf - I just loaded up a brand new character and ran through the tutorial again and was able to backstab enemies as soon as I had daggers equipped. I then exited Alestair and entered the forest where I had enough experience to level up for the first time. Entering the level up screen I noticed that all characters are automatically given 1 point in each of the Might, Finesse and Sorcery trees. Under Finesse, the stock ability EVERY character receives is 1 point in Assassins Art.

Essentially what this means is we are both correct. You are indeed accurate in the fact that you need at least 1 point in this skill to backstab. However, since the point is automatically assigned to every new character this means that every single character can backstab as soon as they receive daggers in the tutorial.

The only way you would not be able to backstab is if you respec as soon as you have the option to in the game and don't put any points in finesse. As most players do not have the money to do this that early in the game it seems an unlikely action many players would take.

I will amend the solution slightly to say that a point is needed and automatically assigned. I would also ask if you did as I suggested regarding the Fateweaver? If you did not then I'd say you have a very rare copy of the game on your hands as for many other people this solution works perfectly fine. I would be curious to know either way.

Basically any humanoid enemy counts for this. One important thing that I've found helps is that you can repeatedly combat roll while sneaking (B button) and it will help you sneak up to something quickly while remaining undetected. Side note for people who perhaps didn't pay attention to the tutorial, sneak is RB button and backstab is whatever button you mapped daggers to, and when you are within range you tap the corresponding button.

Finding this out I was easily able to clear 20 as a Soldier with no investment in the Sneak skill. If you're used to the usual stealth methods in other games, mainly staying behind targets and out of sight when you don't have an opening, this will be easy regardless of class.

As far as places I'd recommend, that even benefit from this method, I would say Lorca-Rane is the best spot for this. It easily has a dozen Jottun that respawn every time you return, and divide and conquer is almost necessary on them to prevent wasting potions fighting them all at once. These guys are ideal because most of them sit in one spot and don't patrol or turn around, as well as the fact that Jottun generally don't bunch up together, they stay spread out.

After all the frustrations with getting bashed into the ground by three Jottun on Hard difficulty, I was satisfied to find I could sneak up and eviscerate their throat with little effort.

Nice guide.

However, the button for backstab corresponds to which inventory slot you've assigned the daggers. If the daggers are your main weapon, then it's X, and it's Y if they're secondary.

Fixed, thanks for pointing it out. I honestly forgot about button binds being interchangeable because I stuck with a melee weapon on X and daggers on Y.

To backstab an enemy, you either need to have a pair of daggers or faeblades equipped in either weapon slot (please note that Faeblades DO NOT count towards this trophy, so grab some daggers). Then essentially all you have to do is sneak up on 20 enemies and backstab them for the achievement.

I found a great spot to grind this out was in the forests north of Gorhart. While enemies appear on your mini map, having 3 points in the Detect Hidden skill will enable them to appear as arrows, giving you an advantage to sneaking up on them. Also rolling quickly behind them using Circle while in Sneak Mode can get you in a quick position for a backstab if you time it right. I also leveled my daggers up a bit so that I could quick kill enemies in one shot. This is not a requirement, but it helps if you want to silently backstab a group of enemies.

Rinse and repeat til the trophy pops.

As noted on TrueAchievements: You do need at least 1 point in the Finesse skill called Assassin's Art to have the ability to backstab. Please note that all new characters are automatically given a point in this skill making it possible for any character to backstab as soon as they receive a pair of daggers.

The achievement is unlocked when you backstab your 20th enemy. If you execute a stealth kill in the manner in which it is taught in the prologue, you will have performed a successful backstab. Equip the daggers in either primary or secondary weapon slot. Approach an enemy in the crouched position (dodge-rolls and the dodge-teleport of some higher level destinies performed when in the crouched position retain you in the crouched position). Press the button when you see the prompt (cn_X if the daggers are primary - cn_Y if they are secondary). You will know when you have performed a proper backstab when the kill is accompanied by an animated sequence. If in doubt, activate the achievement tracker and make sure it advances on your stealth kills.

This may be performed by any vocation at a low level. The introductory character in the prologue is able to perform a backstab. However, you must inflict enough damage to instantaneously defeat the character. So, increased levels, more powerful daggers, and investment in the finesse Assassin's Art ability all contribute to the lethality of your sneak attacks and increase the enemies that can be backstabbed.

Some enemies are most easily defeated with a backstab. Accordingly, I recommend obtaining this achievement in normal play rather than grinding it out. The below video (made on Re-Reckoning) shows the achievement unlocking in The Natural Order quest where you must kill ten Jottun. They are powerful, have tough skins, and resist normal attacks. Yet, they are vulnerable to the backstab. Why engage in a prolonged fight when you can get a quick kill? Where you cannot sneak up on them, you can get them to run after you. When they lose interest and turn around, you can sneak behind them using roll-dodge to catch up to them, and backstab them when the prompt appears. I like to equip the daggers as the secondary weapon because then I can perform a backstab whenever the situation presents itself without opening up the inventory menu to change weapons.

You can backstab enemies by using daggers. Press :r2: to go into stealth mode. Walk up behind an enemy and when close, press attack (:square: or :triangle:, depending on whether you use them as primary or secondary weapon) and it can instantly kill your enemy. You’ll need the Assassin’s Art skill in the Finesse tree before you can do so however. The higher the ability, the longer it will take for enemies to detect you.

If you’re playing as a different destiny, make a new save file of your current character. Go see a Fate Weaver, reset your destiny and reassign your ability points. Once you’ve obtained the trophy, reload your save.

The tutorial will teach you how to sneak up on an enemy by pressing to enter stealth mode. Simply sneak up behind them and hit or (depending on where your daggers are equipped) to backstab them. For this achievement, it actually requires that you kill the enemy with the backstab. You'll know ahead of time if they'll die or not because the icon will have a red tint around the edges. If the attack will not kill, it will be a normal circle.

Only kills using blades count. When you sneak up from behind, the square button should light up.
