How to unlock the Zerg Rush achievement in Knights of Honor II: Sovereign - Definitive Guide
Hello! Out of all the achievements currently in Knights of Honor II I personally felt this one would be the most difficult however after changing a few settings, a couple of separate playthroughs I was successful in 2hrs 35mins. I spent probably longer than I should have building within my empire, so hopefully you'll win in an even better time!
Here are some tips to help get this achievement!
Settings and Nation Choice
It is advisable to play on the easiest difficulty for the quickest time however doing this on normal mode is just as achievable.
Slow ageing on your king allows extra time to potentially have daughters marry into other great powers. It also allows him to stay as "young" or "adult" longer. The downside is when he is old or venerable, you will need to wait a little bit longer to claim victory.
Byzantium was my nation of choice; they start with the most provinces allowing you the highest chance to get all province features and stacked provinces for your knights to govern. They also help with influencing the power rankings with a large empire for expansion, and large army for supremacy. Finally they start with the Ecumenical Patriarch which adds +500 to fame and gives a free cleric.
Knight Selection
The knights I selected were 2 Diplomats, 2 Clerics ( 1 being the Ecumenical Patriarch ) 1 Marshal, 4 Merchants which included my ruler and all his descendants. I felt I could probably swap the Cleric for another Diplomat or another Marshal depending on how your playthrough is going. The reason I chose 4 Merchants is because I could send them to other great powers to trade, increasing the likelihood they would vote for me. After 2 hours in, I currently am +2100 gold allowing me to stockpile a heap of gold to give to nations when I am ready to claim victory.
Great Powers
Once the great powers have been chosen you can see which nations you need to make agreements with and improve relations. Make as many agreements as possible while saving your Royal Marriages for the top 3 powers, the top 3 are unlikely to drop out of the rankings and keeps the bonus for the longest possible time.
The bottom 2 nations can drop out of the great power rankings, hurting your chances at claiming victory however sending a diplomat and getting agreements with them doesn't take too long.
Strategy
Income and Trade.
This is the number 1 priority in the first 60minutes of the game. This will allow you to build up your Providence Features(PFs) for trade and fame. This also allows you to create alot of passive income from your provinces. PFs give you the most fame, it currently generates +2150 from all provinces nearly half of what you need to claim victory.
Merchant Knight skills and selecting the traditions that match can really elevate your income. I won't add the examples of how I've built my knights, however I can add that in this guide if needed.
Priority 2 is to ensure nobody declares war on you in those 60minutes. Build peasants in all of your settlements as soon as the game starts, and have a spare slot for a 2nd Marshal to load up on peasants if you need to.
Sending diplomats to every nation who you have a negative relation with is key to nobody declaring war on you.
Once you have organized your provinces, trading with the great powers, sent out non-aggression pacts, upgraded you knights skills and built up enough fame it is time to start fine tuning the last steps toward winning.
Votes
You will need support from all the top nations to gain victory, however how much support do you need?
3 Nations currently STRONGLY support me, 2 Nations SLIGHTLY support me and 3 Support me. This got me over the line, so seeing this support is a good indicator you are close to victory.
Royal Marriages was the 2nd last thing I did to get a boost from the top nations to get enough weight behind those votes. Maybe I got lucky here, if you think you can achieve victory in your current rulers life time, send out those proposals!
Remember back to when I stacked 4 Merchants and rolling in gold? This is when it pays off, The last thing I did was send gold to nations to get a small boost in weight per vote, these were 10k each and with such a large income it was easy to fork out cash if you are extremely close to winning.
SAVE SAVE SAVE. Always save before you claim victory.
Last Words
Remember that gaining votes from the great powers is all about what they think of you which comes from diplomatic relations with them. Byzantium give you the largest empire with the strongest army and highest fame. This takes away 2 negative things which impact the voting by, from what I have noticed, the most.
I hope these tips have given you enough knowledge to fine tune what you need to get this achievement done. Remember 5 hours is along time! Good luck!
