How to unlock the Your death won't be in vain! achievement in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris - Definitive Guide

This is a simple achievement. Throughout the levels you'll find small floating cat's heads. These are canopic jars (urns). The jars appear only when someone on your friend list died in the game (thanks to Omen66 for clearing that up).

Pick up five of these, and you unlock the achievement. I'm only in the Tomb of the Timekeeper (first level after you get the first piece of Osiris), so it seems that you don't need that many of these jars.

Its probably worth noting that if none of your friends have played the game you can create and account, add them to your friends list, play through a level and die in obvious locations, then load up your main profile and pick up the jars from those locations.

You might want to add that you need to collect 5 jars to unlock the first onyx weapon

Perhaps silly questions, but:

1. Where do you see how many jars you already have collected?
2. Where do you buy/unlock the weapon with your jars?

Still working as of Nov 2023. Here's how I single-player boosted it on my Xbox Series S:
1. I installed the game to my old Xbox One and logged into a second account - you can probably do this on a single Xbox console but there could be switching back-and-forth between accounts. I tested this with a guest account but that didn't seem to produce any canopic jars. I also tried this in multiplayer but the appearance of canopic jars was spotty and the total collected sometimes reset to the previous total.
2. Went to one of the small challenge pillars (aka pylons) that spawns waves of enemies, started the challenge and let the enemies kill me. Continued to go back to this area, started the challenge and kept dying.
3. I left that area until it was offscreen (to be safe) and the exited the game to the menu.
4. Logged into my primary account on my Xbox Series S and went into the game.
5. When I went to the area where I died with the other account there was 3 canopic jars. Exited the game to the menu and then went back in and there was 3 more canopic jars to oollect. Rinsed and repeated for the total number of deaths with the other account. Though some websites suggest that you don't always get a jar for each death, I found that this method did.
6. I also used this method to get all onyx weapons. Note that the 'jars collected' running total resets once you reach the number needed for each weapon (if you have your first 4 jars and pickup 3 more jars, you will get the Onyx Pistols and your total will now be 2 jars). Onyx weapons will show up in your weapons inventory once awarded. After you get the 105 jars required to get all of the Onyx weapons, the canopic jars will continue to appear but will only award points. Total canopic jars needed to get the weapons are:
Onyx Pistols - 5
Onyx Submachine Gun - 10
Onyx Assault Rifle - 15
Onyx Marksman Rifle - 20
Onyx Shotgun - 25
Onyx Rocket launcher - 30

As of October this achievement is currently unobtainable. The jars are not showing up. I will delete this once it becomes available again

Edit this is now fixed and working again.

I started and completed the game this week and no jars showed up for the entire game. Checking the leaderboards I had friends who'd died multiple times, yet nothing showed up. Found a post on the square Enix forums with a guy saying the same thing and he used a link to this achievement saying no one had unlocked it since 28th sept. We'll see what they will do. I'll email them or something today to see if it's a glitch or a shut down

Guys! I got this achievement to unlock today! Idk if it's been fixed or what, but I had canopic jars showing up at the end on my 4 player tomb run. You can see my completion for this achievement on the Recent Winners list, and I may have video evidence inbound once it uploads. Stay tuned! rock

Edit: Can confirm! Loaded up single player and found more canopic jars from another gamertag I was using to purposefully die with. Video evidence of canopic jars in single player inbound!

Canopic jars appear in the game world at locations at which someone on your friends list who also owns the game has died. The canopics look like grey jars with a slightly bright shimmer. Pick up five of these and the achievement will unlock. This also works in local co-op.
