How to unlock the Survivalist achievement in Lazy Galaxy: Rebel Story - Definitive Guide

After reading and watching other guides and comments, I have decided to compile a full walkthrough with steps and some additional notes that may be helpful
You have 6 allies:
1) H-34-RT (robot, this ally is automatic)
2) Jack (old man)
3) Simon (green gator)
4) Unkillable girl
5) Gustar Von Knittenberg (Lizard)
6) Brute (Brown owl pirate)
7) Zarg O’ Moto

Steps:
1) Complete the game to recruit allies 2-7. You automatically have Ally #1 (this robot will count as progress towards the achievement).
2) After completing the game, select story or normal mode. I chose normal mode.
3) Select ship
4) Select 1st Ally
*This is the ally that you are going to try and max-out
*In bottom right corner, you will see “dialogue history” as a cassette icon. Select this to see each allies progress indicated by a red progress bar
*Each ally develops a relationship with the other 6 allies. To see each of these relationships, select that character and then move your cursor over the other characters. Progress for each of these is indicated by hearts. You will want 4 hearts for a maxed-out relationship.
*Once a character has a maxed-out relationship with every ally, that character will have a fully red progress bar under their portrait screen.
*If you back out from the dialogue history to the select ally menu, a character with maxed-out relationships with every ally will also be indicated with a yellow star in the top left corner of the character portrait.
*Note that the 1st ally that you are trying to max out will take the longest because all dialogue options for both H-34-RT (your automatic ally) and the ally you are selecting will appear. For instance, if you choose Jack (ally you are trying to max out 1st) and Simon, you will see dialogue for H-34-RT, Jack and Simon. Once you max out H-34-RT and the ally your 1st ally, progress will
5) Select 2nd Ally
*These choices will rotate the other 5 allies that you are trying to max out with the 1st ally.
6) Play to the cutscene (you will also see a power-up floating in space there)
*If no cutscene occurs when you see that power-up, your allies have exhausted all dialogue options with each other
*Dialogue will now ~10-20 seconds. Most of it was about their history like I caught some weird dialogue between Unkillable girl and Zarg O’Moto with Zarg wanting to be a video game designer but his parents not approving….you can really tell that the game designers were padding this game with extra content to make up for its short story mode.
7) Let cutscene/dialogue play out
8) Hit “start” on your controller, then select “menu”, then select “yes”
9) If you select “continue last”, you will resume with the characters you chose so you do not need to go through steps 2-5 above.
10) Once you have maxed out 4 allies (H-34-RT is mandatory; the other 3 allies are up to you), you will need to play through the entire story mode.
11) Once you defeat the final boss, you will need to move your ship over to one of the 2 icons now present on the screen and press “Y” (like you do to pick-up power-ups and upgrades) to choose an ending:
a) Charge the enemy ship (self-destruct) – you received this ending automatically when playing through the game the first time earning:
Lazy Galaxy: Rebel StorySelf-SacrificeThe Self-Sacrifice achievement in Lazy Galaxy: Rebel Story worth 60 pointsComplete the mission by sacrificing self
b) Turn back and join the Intergalactic Resistance Union – THIS IS THE ENDING YOU NEED TO CHOOSE FOR THIS ACHIEVEMENT.

*I understand that there is a lot of writing here (probably too much) but I was still a little unclear on how to proceed with this achievement. Other guides were helpful with getting me on the right foot and no disrespect for them, I just wanted to write down the steps as detailed as possible. This achievement will take 2-3 hours based on my experience (special note, I maxed out all 7 allies because there were only a few remaining relationships left to max out at that point and only too me an additional hour). Hopefully this guide will fully clarify everything and save you some time.
*Please comment if you have additional notes or need help with anything.

You need 4 allies total maxed out. The robot (H-34-RT) is mandatory and then you need 3 others of your choosing. Sorry if some of the text was confusing in the guide. I think I wrote too much but did not want to leave anything out

excellent details - nothing wrong with the other guides, in fact I like that all three examples of good guide types are here - short and sweet, visual, and detailed. This is what I like to see though, nothing missing! clap

Haha thank you, I appreciate that. I don’t post solutions to ever compete for it to be in the “top spot” or anything. My goal is to provide a different perspective or possibly clarify something with my own style of writing. I’m glad all 3 solutions helped you out, that is really all that matters for the solutions on this site! smile

do you need to play twice or can you get both endings on the same run?

@TheOnlyMatto, I believe you need to play through the game twice to get both endings. I think the game counts on you just recruiting all characters the first play through and going through the self destruct ending. Then, build the relationships with each ally and get 2nd ending.

I think it could be possible to grind the relationships during yo first playthrough and maybe get the alternate ending but I never tested that out. All indications I found seemed to point to 2 full playthroughs

I just wonder if a save/sync glitch could be used to make this game even shorter.. think i'll try it.

edit* so I am unsure If you can build relationships before the end.. Following your advice I would like to note you can go in to settings and change dialog window duration to short by moving the bar to the left.

@TheOnlyMatto, thank you for following up and providing some extra details. I was not sure how to work around and make the grind any faster but making the dialogue window duration shorter sounds like a pretty good find! Thank you for the feedback, that might be helpful for those wanting a quicker completion, good luck!

I don’t understand why you need 4 chars maxed and not just 3 which are in the battle.. has anyone tried the 2nd playthrough with just 3 chars maxed out ??

For this achievement you need to max out 4 characters with their friendships with each character. You can keep doing the first level until they talk then quit out and do it again. Once you’ve upgraded 4 characters you need to finish the game and pick the new option

Do you get anything good for maxing out each character? Or should you do this after you beat the game?

Well it only takes 15 mins to beat it lol. You could do this if your having trouble. You get better upgrades for just playing tho

Nothing is happening when I play the first level and quit out. I've been retrying for 20 mins. Is there some trick to this? Do you have to kill yourself to make it count? All my friendship bars are staying the same even though I keep choosing the same 2 characters.

Theres a menu you can go in and see their hearts for friendship and it goes up every time. They keep having new conversations too. You can try killing yourself it doesn’t go up but I just quit out

Note that you'll need to complete the game after maxing 4 characters to level max then choose the new option to unlock a second ending and the cheevo :)

I've maxed out all 6 characters for the robot. Completed the game and it only gives me the option to blow up the ship... Should I have a second option there?

Whoops I forgot to add that thanks Clad lol. You need to max out 4 robots friendship with all other 6 robots so they are fully upgraded

So you pick one character and stay with them and choose other characters every time you play a mission until the first character is fully upgraded?

Thanks for clarifying guys. I got this eventually... I thought it was 1 character, but max out the friendship with 4 others. This isn't right. You have to have ALL friendships maxed for 4 total characters (so Robot, plus 3 other companions).

It will show a star instead of 1 or 2 (level) on the top left of their icon in the selection page. You need 4 of those stars. This is quite a grind, and a boring one unfortunately.

Damn! Taken me ages to get just Jack half way to a level 2. Anyone know if playing a different difficulty helps it go faster?

No it doesn’t because the only thing that matters is getting 2 characters talking to each other to build up their relationship. It goes up half a heart each talk

pick one ship you want after this you can choose between 6 different friends / buddies...
you can choose 2 in total. for the achievement you have to get all dialogs between each one.
1st buddie with 2,3,4,5,6...2 with 3,4,5,6........so the level bar must be full and a star. you can see how much progress you have between the different buddies on the right down site / options (Dialog its a record sign) there you see how much hearts friendship you have...i think each conversation gives you 0,5 hearts...so you need 8 conversations to max.
like billz said just play story mode choose your ship and buddies and play the first mission till you get to the conversation between the 2 buddies, takes 30 secondes, after this quit out and repeat it, max it and go for the other 2 buddies...you dont need all ships unlocked. after you get 4 max with a star beat the game and choose the top option.

Yep, agreed. This is not at all clear. It does work but you have to pick through the comments to actually have the context you need to understand this.
