I'm so glad they made this easier to obtain after the update. I got the achievement with mutations not listed. I played Headshot, Four Swordsmen, Chainsaw Massacre, and Iron Man. So all mutations listed on the main menu should count.

The counter for my Mutations is stuck on 4 no matter how many I cycle through. Any suggestions for fixes?

@Blind I think it's safe to say that loading up 6 matches and quitting out of them shouldn't take you 6 weeks, yeah. laugh

Join a mutation every friday afternoon, as its a new mutation per week - you dont need to play, just join.
If you're stuck at 5/6 (like I was for 2 weeks!!), join a mutation game then play versus for few minutes. This SHOULD unlock the last one for you!

I believe the problem is the current mutations going on, are community made, and are not programmed in to count towards the achievement. I was at 4/6 the week before the community made mutations started coming out, and have not gotten any credit for the last 2 months of mutations that I have played.

For anyone still on the path for Mutant Overlord, mutations are now done biweekly, meaning it takes a minimum of 3 months to finish under the best circumstances. They update around noonish and the date of this post was one of the biweekly updates, so plan accordingly.

As for people 'bugged' in their progress, perhaps realism versus is the issue? I played Versus Survival and Lone Gunman in June, Healing Gnome and Tank in July, none in August because they repeated mutations I had already, then Hunting Party just today. I played Realism Versus last because I knew it was my quick ticket out of the achievement at 5/6 mutations. I was also kicked nearly immediately from the Realism Versus lobby and received Mutant Overlord while staring at the main menu.

Just as a note, for those who are stuck at 5/6, you actually load up REALISM VERSUS as opposed to regular versus. Some say that you need to stay in a game for a few minutes, mine actually unlocked as soon as the game started.

I have been told that its taken 7 weeks for the last one to change as Valve didnt update the mutation. That could just have been for the 2 people I know who had the issue, but who knows. Valve suck!

Been stuck at 4/6 for months. Playing realism versus for any period of time will not fix it, nor will remaining in a mutation game for hours.

I just played Hunting Party (as a host and not-host) for a while then quit to the main menu - nothing. Then I played Realism VS (as a host and not-host) for a while then quit to the main menu - still nothing. That's really stupid because I don't know what else to do to get this stupid achievement that was bugged after the patch sometime earlier. I played the Mutation and Realism VS on the same map, with the same team, on the same difficulty and still it's locked. WTF?

As of 3/18/12 the mutation is Four Swordsmen of the Apocalypse. I was at 5/6 before this mutation was added.

I've never played Four Swordsmen before, so it isn't a repeat for me. Four Swordsmen isn't a community mutation, so that isn't the problem either. One of the 5 that I have completed is Realism Versus.

I've played through a single level, I've played through an entire chapter, I've played it online with random people that I've never payed with before, I've tried to play a few minutes of versus after finishing it and I've cleared my cache. All for naught as I still don't get the achievement.

I've also had a few friends send me private messages saying that they are having the same problem, i.e they are at 3/6, 4/6, etc. and this mutation isn't getting them closer to the finish.

Other than waiting two more weeks for the next mutation, anyone have any suggestions on what to do to fix this?

Thanks!

Edit to above comment: I loaded up Realism Versus after playing Four Swordsmen and the achievement popped. I swear to all things holy that I had already went from 3/6 to 4/6 by playing Realism Versus in the past. I have no idea why this worked, but it did. I should have gotten the achievement just by playing Four Swordsmen, but for some reason loading up Realism Versus gave it to me.

You can see how many you've got in the achievements menu of the game. There should have been a new mutation yesterday or today. I hope that they won't be too long (I'm at 5/6)
ps: sorry for my english

For this achievement you need to play 6 mutations, the mutations can be found in the Left 4 Dead 2 menu under their own category. Mutations are currently being updated and changed once every 2 weeks and so at this rate it will take a minimum of 6 weeks for you to unlock the achievement.

However that being said there's a couple of major issues for players working toward this achievement. The first of which is that Valve introduced what are known as Community Mutations do not count toward your mutations count and so in short, if a Community Mutation is put up while you working on your achievement, it won't increase your count and you'll have to wait for the next mutation and hope that it's an "official" mutation. The second piece of bad news is that duplicate mutations do not count twice, for example if you play "The Four Swordsmen (Of The Apocalypse)" and later down the line play it again, it won't count. So in short each mutation can only increase your total count one time.

This former problem has been verified by Valve in the L4D blog. (Thanks https://www.trueachievements.com/Cartoon+Ghost.htm)

After our recent poll about community Mutations we received many emails pointing out that you cannot earn Mutant Overlord playing custom mutations. Don’t stop with the Mutation ideas, we will come back to community Mutations. We are just taking a little break for now.
The latter problem is also highlighted in the same blog.

The Passing introduces a series of weekly game mode events dubbed "Mutations." These are week-long runs of new gameplay modes that range from "Realism Versus" to "Chainsaw Massacre". Each week one new Mutation is featured and the previous Mutation retired. All you have to do is play 6 DIFFERENT Mutations, not 6 straight, from the cycle from 6 different weeks.
For those interested the blog can be found here.

Now, as stated earlier the game updates the mutation once every 2 weeks. Every Friday the in-game blog will notify you of the mutation change (approximately 15:00 Eastern/Noon Pacific).

There have been reports of people getting stuck at 5/6. It appears the issue is that Realism Versus only counts as .5 (0.5/6). To solve this simply join a game of Realism Versus again and play for a while. During the game the achievement should unlock. This "fix" comes from Ben Legend

To receive credit for playing a mutation you only need to enter the challenge/game. This has been confirmed by multiple people and is useful if you don't have a lot of time in a given week to play.

A list of mutations can be found here. This is the most complete list available.

There is about to be new DLC for this game, and with it, all the mutations will be available to be played at any point in time. Whether this will make the achievement easier, or if it will disable this achievement is a decent question, but I just wanted to inform the OP of this since he/she will likely be changing this solution when the new DLC comes out.

just want to add that if you have trouble with this one, and you've ALREADY played realism vs numerous times and waited for ages and it still doesn't unlock, try playing the other vs mutation. The achievement unlocked for me right away when I started a game using the "regular" versus mutation

Mutations is a new game mode where regular games will be altered from their previous rules. This game mode will be updated weekly by the developers so you will need to play at least one game a week through the Mutations option every week for six weeks.

Complete six of these game alterations and the achievement will unlock.

This game mode will be updated every Friday of each week. Make sure you check the blog posts on the title screen on a regular basis to keep up to date with the current Mutation game alternations.

This achievement will span six weeks, as you need to take part in six different Mutations, and they only change once a week. Just once every
Play one Mutation match a week for six weeks.

At the moment, you do not need to wait 6 weeks to get this achievement (perhaps the reason for this was the release of a patch or the developers disabled this option). Mutations can be changed independently, they are open and available from the very beginning. To do this, in the main menu of the game, select the "MUTATIONS" mode, then press To change the mutation, change it to one that you have not played yet and launch any campaign, as well as any chapter in it. As soon as the chapter loads, you will be counted as having taken part in 1 mutation, and you do not need to go through to the end. You can also check this by going to the parameter ACHIEVEMENTS, where the number of mutations in which you took part will be displayed.

Thus, you can get the achievement in about 10 minutes. Using this method, you can quite easily get several other achievements:

Mutation "Chainsaw Massacre" in which the only weapons available are a chainsaw with endless fuel and pistols.

  • CHAIN OF COMMANDER Kill 100 Common Infected with a chainsaw.
  • TANK BURGER Kill a tank with a melee weapon. We select the “Extinct Center” campaign, the “Streets” chapter, the difficulty level is easy, you will definitely come across a Tank. Moreover, it doesn’t matter who from your team kills the Tank, the achievement is given to everyone. It's easier to get it alone with bots.
Mutation "To pieces!" in which the only weapons available are the M60 machine gun with endless ammo and a pistol.

  • LONG BURN Using the M60, kill 25 Infected without releasing the trigger.
  • With this mutation, it will be much easier to complete all chapters on expert difficulty for the achievement THERE'S MORE TO PROVE . It is also recommended to do this with bots, it is easier in terms of complexity + bots see and shoot at enemies even from bushes and anything that impedes direct visibility, they cover and react to threats better than living partners, and most importantly, they will not shoot you. Be sure to carry a bottle of fat man vomit with you, this will distract enemies from you in tough moments, especially at the end of each campaign when you are waiting for the evacuation transport. Also, in tough moments with 2 Tanks, it is recommended to carry buckshot or incendiary cartridges with you and distribute them immediately before the battle. It also helps if you find laser sights for machine guns, this will significantly increase the accuracy of fire and you will see the direction of the bots’ shooting trajectory.
