How to unlock the The First Puppet achievement in Lies of P - Definitive Guide

Refuse to give Geppetto your heart at the end of the game to unlock The Nameless Puppet optional boss. Similar to the last few bosses, the first phase is slower than the second. If you upgraded the P-Organ to increase special grindstone uses, the second application helps.

Gear Setup
What gear you bring to the fight is entirely up to you and should match the attributes you have leveled up. Here is the setup that was used in making this guide:
  • Weapon: Bone-Cutting Sawblade +10 & Big Pipe Wrench Handle
  • Legion Arm: Falcon Eyes
  • Amulets: Patience, Iron Wall, & Blue Guardianship
  • Frame: F350
  • Converter: Old Generation (starter)
  • Cartridge: Belford Disruption
  • Liner: LADA Fiber-Reinforced
Equip the Electric Grindstone. Additionally, bring Saw Blades and Throwing Cells, but don’t use them unless the Nameless Puppet has less than 30% health in phase 2 and you have sufficient life/healing to survive.

Phase 1
At the start of phase 1, buff your weapon then quickly move to the right to avoid Caro’s opening attack. Block most of the incoming attacks and try get get perfect guards to stagger him later in the fight. When the First Puppet is stunned, hit him with a charged attack. Otherwise, limit your attacks to 1-2 hits between combos if you don’t need to heal, repair, or rest. Unlike other bosses in Lies of P, the Nameless Puppet will heal if you are too far away from him.
  • Swing/Uppercut/Jab: Block or perfect guard the Nameless Puppet’s core attacks.
  • Double Swing: When the boss swings his sword in a circle over his head counter-clockwise, block 2 consecutive hits coming from his right.
  • Leap Attack: If the Nameless Puppet jumps toward you either block or dodge to the side.
Phase 2
In phase 2, the Nameless Puppet is faster, more aggressive, and has 2 buffed swords. Once you lower his life to 30%, toss all your Throwing Cells at him in succession. Then, switch to the Saw Blades and throw them after the previous one completes its attack. Use the Urgent Repair Tool when you’re durability is low. The Nameless Puppet adds the following attacks to this phase:
  • Dash Attack: If you see the Nameless Puppet squat with both swords over his shoulder, block or move to the side.
  • Charged Dash Attack: When the Nameless Puppet squats with both swords out to the side, run to the side to avoid a dash attack that will knock you down.
  • Leap & AoE Attack: The First Puppet will jump high in the air just before slamming his sword down creating a 3 red lines on the ground that deal AoE damage and will explode. When you see him jump, either steps slightly to the side to end up between the lines or move far the the side/away from the target.
  • Corkscrew Attack: If the Nameless Puppet spins as he jumps up, run to the side and avoid his corkscrew attack.
  • Extended Slam: When the boss raised a glowing sword high above his head, run/dodge to the side and avoid the extra long slam that follows.
  • Dash, Thrust, & Lift: If the boss squats with 1 sword pointed at you, move far away. He will follow by lunging toward you, impaling you with his sword, and lifting you up.

Dead almost 50 times, but eventually killed him.
tips to second fase: use Legion to parry all the time, avoid red strike dodging and when he jump, just run under him and throw bombs. Don't be greed and take your time to cure and recharge legion when is far and not charging a new attack.

For me it worked out with the trident and electricity buff. Of course using aegis. You have to refill legion sometimes, but it worked.

Thanks for the loadout, used the two dragon sword instead. I'm curious why the starter converter? I played the whole game dodging and skipping the whole blocking/parrying mechanic. This fight necessitated blocking..not even perfect blocking, just blocking. As it keeps the boss close to you after they've taken their shots and you've the opportunity to win back some health which you don't get to do if they just hit you unchallenged. Keeps you pulse cells in tact for longer too. Woo, you'd think I'd been playing the game properly lol.

100% what murhymarv said. Trident with fully maxed out aegis made NP an absolute snoozefest on NG+. I personally didn’t use Aegis in Phase 1 because I didn’t want to use up any legion magazines in case I needed them in Phase 2, but taking some time to learn how to perfect parry his attacks in Phase 1 isn’t too difficult.

Slap on Iron Wall, Puppet Destroyer, Patience, and Blue Guardianship (normal versions or +1 variants, whatever you have), and just stab away while holding up Aegis. Can also use the Electric or Destruction grindstone at the start of Phase 2 or some extra damage or stagger.

Take the moments when NP is staggered to either do some additional damage or replenish health or legion and you’re good.

Shit. Im level 200 something on ng+ and tried every trick. Still never got him below 50% on phase 2. He’s insane. Most of the damage in phase 2 is throwing pot shots that staggers him but then he just destroys me :(

Good guide just wanted to add that the acid grindstone does more damage and I used the puppet string if you land the air attack it does amazing damage

Got the bastard today.

First phase I deflected his first swing and then just tanked with aegis and poked him with the trident

Second phase I started with perfect grindstone and deflected most attacks to stagger him. After that I just started to throw pot shots, acid and fire and that killed him.

I just cleared this on NG+ for another ending.

I was really struggling.

I went and respecced my P-Organ and pumped everything in to skills that regained health and durability, boosted attack, charged fable (not legion).

Did it first try after. Only one, maybe two bosses that really demand blocking and perfects, and this one really is one of them. If you spec to that playstyle it really does make this way easier.

Serves me right for playing it like Bloodborne.

So frustrating - I killed him but didn’t get the achievement! I got the good ending too - and you can’t get that without killing the nameless puppet!

This guy is tricky, but I much encourage you not to try to cheese him in any way. Learn his patterns and the fight is really a lot of fun. Took me a few dozen tries, certainly.

I didn't use perfect block much during the game, as I felt comfortable dodging. And it's super important to dodge Puppet as well. But his Fury charge attacks just need to be perfectly blocked. Doing the fight over and over, you'll be able to identify windows where you can throw a Charging Cell at him. This fight will lay bare any issues with your fighting (for me, perfect blocking) and forces you to competently utilize everything the game gives you.

It's essential to get the first phase down to a point where it's trivial. Using Aegis as described, as well as an electricity buff, will do that for you. I also used Aegis to block both attacks where he thrusts at you (both the one where he skewers you, as well as the one where a red laser thingy shoots out of his sword). I used Puppet Ripper by the way, simply because I was most used to it and I like the range.

Really good fight, and certainly as difficult as some of the more difficult Dark Souls bosses. Last boss I remember that gave me this much trouble was Dark Souls 3's Nameless King and Sister Friede.

Here's what worked for me in NG+...

Amulets

Health amulet
Puppet murder amulet
More fable, more attack amulet (I think this one is a boss amulet)
Subsequent hits amulet (also a boss amulet)

No amount of Stamina will save you, so don't worry about it.

Weapon

Nobliesse (Simon's weapon I believe)

Respec

Whatever is needed to achieve 59% weight (apply your Defense Parts first)
50 for Vitality, Vigor, and Advance
The rest on Motivity

Strategy

Phase 1:

Get full Fable
Grind your Electric stone before entering the arena
Get into the center of the arena and Aegis up (hold LT)
Bash him over the head (RB) while Aegis is active
A lot

Phase 2:

Pulse Cell (if needed) and Electric Grindstone immediately
Aegis bash his brains out (again, hold LT and spam RB)
Pulse Cell whenever he retreats
Charge Attack when he's dizzy
When Aegis is no more, either Legion Magazine or Throwing Cells

Easy on NG, I cried on NG+ :'(

**MISSABLE**

In order to fight the Nameless Puppet, you will need to refuse to give Gepetto the heart at the climax in the Under the Abyss area.

It isn’t a very tough boss, as these things go. During the first phase, its attacks are very easy to perfectly parry, and you can get in some Fatal Attacks to take huge chunks out of its health bar. It’s really the second phase that you need to steel yourself for. The thing’s moves are completely different, and now they’re really fast, too. During this phase, the best thing to do is to sprint clear of its attacks and dodge as carefully as you can, managing your stamina. Run in for some basic swipes and then get your distance – in similar fashion to the King’s Flame Fuoco fight.

Personally, the whetstone for the perfect block and the hand of Aegis helped me.

I killed a puppet, but they didn’t give me the trophy, it seemed to be glitchy.

The method indicated above is difficult in the second phase of the boss. In order to kill the puppet without straining, leave a lot of throwing objects for the second phase, and throw cannonballs at the end - they make it possible to carry out an enhanced attack. We farm the carrying capacity to 50. We don’t go for approach, only dodges. The main character should be very easy. We pump up the heart for the maximum number of throwing objects, healing - 10 - all for the second phase. Aegis is only effective for the first phase. It’s natural to do everything on the first playthrough with a skip to a flash drive.

Killed a puppet on NG+ and NG+2. Phase 1 was easy, I had a katana +5, I placed a stone on a perfect block + rings to increase damage with a perfect block and with a successful attack. You block, hit with charged attacks, shoot from a grenade launcher hand, you can charge both when the hand’s power runs out. In phase 2, you stupidly throw everything you have at the puppet: cannonballs, bombs, grenades, pipes. Ideally, you dodge 1 attack, throw 2-3 cannonballs, the boss goes into a mini stun, throw a grenade and everything else, repeat 2-3 cannonballs and so on until he dies. I pumped my heart up to + for throwing objects and set everything I have for quick access. On NG+2 I killed him with 1 try using this method.

I encountered this problem on NG+, I suffered for a long time over this bitch, in the end, only a blade of frost sharpened twice for electricity helped, replenishing the legend scale with consumables, in combination with an aegis block (charged with consumables), amulets: damage to the puppet, damage to crit. strike, increased endurance, and general for increased stats for life, endurance, etc...

In the second phase, almost all ranged attacks can be blocked with a powerful katana strike. Well, you just have to memorize the timings. And it’s better to dodge close combinations. Seems vulnerable to electricity.

Weapon: Protocol Trident +5
Legion: Puppeteer's thread full leveling
Amulets: Assassin, Tirelessness+1, Burden +1, Red Fox
For protection, we put those that reduce physical damage the most
and a stabbing blow.
Specialist. sharpening for perfect parrying.
Consumables: Electric abrasive.

In the 1st phase, heavy blows are easily parried, the boss stuns a couple of times, and falls to crit once.
In phase 2, we use the sharpening for perfect parry, parry/block, dojim lunges, combine the puppeteer's thread, then sharpen it for lightning. When his HP remains a little less than half, the boss causes an explosion that causes serious damage. We drop him on crit, carry him out, unload his legend, and finish him off with reinforced blows.

On ng+ the boss is a nuisance. I tried all the methods - the easiest one was this:
We pick up the +5 trident and pump up the Aegis to the maximum.
40 HP each, endurance and weight, everything else is in talent, so that there are a lot of legion points.
We pump up the heart for the efficiency of the legion and the number of consumable items, so that there are 6 rounds of legion ammunition.
We put an amulet on crit damage and a whetstone on crit chance. (other amulets for endurance speed and physical damage reduction)
Next, in the first phase, use the whetstone and hold it down and from under the auspices we shut up the boss. At the moments when he gets into the micro-stan, if necessary, we replenish the legion strip.
In the second phase, we first dodge the first attack, then constantly move towards getting closer to the boss. We close ourselves with the aegis and plug it with a trident. When the boss is in micro-stan, we use the whetstone, and in the next window we replenish the legion.

At the moment, this is the strongest boss in the game (considering that without a ghost). You need to stock up on a lot of patience first, secondly, it is very important to get lucky with the order of attacks in the second phase.

I fought him in the following way:
1. Upgraded wrench (+10) with a police baton handle (mobility upgraded to A);
2. Fully pumped puppeteer thread;
3. Pumped P's heart to ideal blocks and the ability to have more Legion clips and the ability to fill the Legion gauge more when reloading + increased ATK with a fatal blow;
4. I redistributed the skills so that there would be more on mobility and endurance (endurance will be very useful, since you will have to dodge often and need to be able to jump back at the last moment);
5. Amulets: Amulet of Load +1, Amulet of Fencer, Amulet of Strength, Amulet of Puppet Destroyer.

First phase: when he just starts running towards you, I used the charged attack of the Wrench Legend, it knocks down almost half of the HP (you need to choose the right moment). Then we block perfectly and attack with powerful blows. Ideal blocks will stun him at some point and you can carry out a deadly attack, which removes a lot. Try to go through phase 1 with +8 heals in your pocket. After many tries, the first phase will be completed in a moment.

Second phase: charge the key to acidelectricity and as soon as he starts messing around with swords at the very beginning, I used the puppeteer's thread in the first attack. And then I just looked for the moment: when he stops or finishes his combo, I immediately used the puppeteer's thread again. (not all hits with the thread go through, in some he misses). Then everything depends on the randomness of his combo and your ability to block (I only blocked close hits) and dodge (all long ones).
