After hatching your first animal, go into your mecha and grab your pet, on PC you have to press F.

To unlock this achievement you are required to pick up a Farm Animal that you have hatched yourself. Farm animals, eggs and incubators are part of the new DLC. Diane is the key to unlocking this achievement.
To get access to Diane you need to first find an egg around the map. I found mine down in Stepstone Peak. Once you have found an egg it will prompt a chat from Diane asking you to build an Outpost for her. To build the outpost you will need 4 Aluminum frames and 2 Aluminum electronics.
Once built, select the outpost and choose Diane if you have already unlocked Ulf. Once she arrives she will ask you help build a fence and a egg incubator her. I think you need around 50 pieces of hard wood for the fence, I can't remember how many exactly. And you will need 4 Copper wire, 2 Aluminum electronics and 1 Aluminum frame.
Once you have built the incubator you can interact with it and place an egg inside. You should have an egg in your inventory to first initiate this quest line but search around the map to find one if not. After 2 days the egg will hatch and you will get your first pet! Once it have been named and spawned you can interact with it and press
to pick it up. The achievement should pop straight away.
For co-op, after I popped the achievement I dropped the pet and my partner was able to get the achievement straight away.
